Pros
All workloads can be integrated with Commvault. If we use a new technology, Commvault integrates with it. Commvault is a data management solution with support for building the DR side of things. With Commvault we can rapidly back up and restore any application we add to our environment.Commvault has support for backing up operating systems and servers. We use Commvault Command Center for backups and restores and for the creation of new clients. We use it for other functionalities as well. In terms of VMware, I can go directly to the Command Center, enter VMware, and I can search it directly. Command Center is very useful and it can be used for more advanced techniques. The most important feature is that everything can be controlled using a single console. It provides us a good holistic view of everything that we have backed up so far. It also provides us all the recovery points. If we look at an an object that has been backed up, we can tell how many retention copies it has, how far we can go, and recover any data, if needed. The solution's interface is easy to use. For manageability, it doesn't matter where the resource is coming from or going to. That's the great power of the Control Panel: It's easy to use and does not matter if you manage on-prem or cloud resources.I'm a big fan of the reporting. You can build your own reports; it's very customizable. You can have individual reports going to groups of people or individuals. You can have them go out multiple times a day. It's basically a free-for-all as far as reporting goes. If anybody wants a specific job report every day, you can build it, schedule it, and have it go out and never touched it again. It's pretty nice. The solution provides us with a single platform to move, manage, and recover our data across on-premise locations. Some of the guys have been using it to move a virtual machine from VMware to the Microsoft solution, Hyper-V. They back it up and then they restore to the different virtual machine provider, and that works great.

The product is easy to put in place. All backups are done very quickly. It's easy to perform restores. What I prefer in the product is its simplicity. There are no useless settings to define, and everything is ready after the initial setup.Cohesity's web-scale architecture enables us to scale up as needed.Cohesity is extremely easy to use and intuitive. After linking a cloud subscription, like Azure for example (AWS and Google are also supported), you can "spin" a VM onto the cloud from any backup snapshot. The restores are easy to do and have made it so that we can incorporate restores into our troubleshooting processes. The most valuable features are the rapid VM restores and the ability to quickly find files and download them directly to my desktop so that I can put them where I need them to be.The most valuable feature is ease of use.It makes our administrators' lives much easier to combine backup, archiving, and services like hosting file shares in one central system with only one user interface.

This is a superior and reliable backup system that can handle large capacities with little management. The backup is very secure. The deduplication using EMC is very good. We are able to make systems and handle random cloning. EMC is a very stable solution for making backups. The product provides good backup and compression services. The solution's most valuable feature is the integrated deduplication function. It's very easy to use the domain once it's been set up. The interface is also user-friendly.The most valuable features are the deduplication and compression and the Data Domain Boost. We have never had any issues with Data Domain. It has been stable. The initial setup was straightforward. Deployment takes about two weeks.

Cons
One issue we face is the complexity of the console. That could be improved on. It takes users time to get familiar with Commvault. On average, it takes our customers between one and three months to learn it. The console and the way you configure Commvault have very advanced settings. It takes time to understand how it works. There is room for improvement in terms of data security.I need documentation for Azure backups. One expectation that I have is regarding PDF documentation. When I was trying to browse the documentation, I could not locate that.I would like them not to push Command Center. It is good, but I would like them to enable all the features for the Java console. Some things are not in the Java console, like Office 365 agents. In fact, they are there, but one of the engineers had to show me how to configure it. It's not done the same as in the Command Center. It does not have an easy deployment. The deployment is not something that just anybody can go in and deploy. The solution's breadth and depth of cloud support are good, but could be better. Some cloud features that are common-sense, especially on AWS, are not completely integrated yet in the product. They are a work-in-progress.Command Center definitely gives us a complete view of our data. But finding some of the granular, very small items that we sometimes have to find, such as auxiliary copies for tapes, I still find that it's easier to navigate and, sometimes, only possible to find them using the CommCell tool.Just to keep it running is time-consuming. There are five people on my team. Commvault was supposed to be one of the less time-consuming solutions, but in reality it takes 60 percent of our time just to keep it running, and that's not even fine-tuning it; that's just to keep it running.

Cohesity cluster upgrades have not been as easy as a single button click. They are a manual process that requires upgrading each node into a cluster individually. The one area where we would like to see additional improvements is with reporting. There are very granular reports from each grid. There are also some built-in reports within Helios (SAS Management Console) that offers basic reporting. However, for complex, large-enterprise environments, a more robust reporting engine that supports detailed audit reporting and enhanced ad hoc reports would be welcome. We have Oracle databases running on Linux servers in our environment and we have found the Oracle backups were quite complex to setup. The GUI is in need of improvement. We would love to see direct compatibility with HPE Simplivity, which we also leverage. The error handling could be improved. There is limited support for legacy systems, which is something that could be improved.I would like to see Microsoft Exchange DAG supported as soon as possible.

The product lacks some security features that would make it more stand-alone and integrated. They should reduce the CPC cost to customers. The product is becoming very expensive. The licensing model was the biggest concern for our company, but the poor support after the initial implementation is of equal concern. The pricing could be better, but it's still not too expensive. The firmware upgrades could be simplified. I'm in the process of struggling to upgrade right now.We have had deduplication and replication issues. When we used another backup software we noticed that it didn't have the same issues. We are not able to deal directly with the OEM we have to go to their partners in Nigeria. The pricing model needs to be improved.

Pricing and Cost Advice
The complete license gives us options for all the features. Commvault does not license based on storage or the management components. It can integrate with any storage vendor. That means that when we are out of storage and need more, we can integrate without additional licensing. In my opinion, Commvault needs to reduce the licensing cost by 20 to 40 percent to make it cost-efficient.Commvault licensing is a perpetual license so only the support is being renewed yearly. There is a bit of cost involved with signing up the entire solution. It's not a cheap solution. Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers. Our yearly cost is around €20,000... The cost is based on the number of users and the amount of data. They sell it per terabyte. The price could perhaps be lower as well.In my experience, compared to solutions like Veritas and Veeam, while they do have their technical pluses and minuses, Commvault can save you on average forty percent initially, and then twenty to twenty-five percent annually.Compared to other competitors and vendors the pricing is fair.

Pricing, setup costs, etc. are pretty typical. The initial cost for Cohesity was less than other products the we evaluated. Cohesity's pricing does offer benefits as DR target costs are less than other solutions. You are not charged for DataProtect licensing for target DR data consumption.Sizing is important and it is easy to overestimate.I expect the system to probably pay off within the first two years. With respect to pricing, make sure that you look at both Rubrik and Cohesity as they are very similar and are quite competitive. We purchased support from Cohesity to ensure that should we face an issue, we don't have to deal with different service providers.Ensure that you understand the per TB licensing model. Also, Exchange backups are not native to Cohesity and require Kroll.

This is one of the more expensive backup solutions on the market. There are many options in the pricing structure which can cause some confusion and necessitate the purchase of additional licensing. In Naira it was twenty-five or twenty-seven million (approximately $75,000 USD) for the implementation and maintenance cost for three years.Pricing is related to size. A lower range solution might be about $33,000. My customers use higher range versions with a price of around $100,000. That's the price for both the hardware and software.
