We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
The solution also provides me with a complete view of our data. I write scripts to report information from the Command Center daily. I report it in HTML and have the status of the last day for the whole environment. We use Commvault IntelliSnap a lot. It's a very good product and has the functionality to enable a snapshot of a vendor's storage... It really helps to speed up the backup process for some of our environments. Its compression and deduplication allow us to store more backups and save storage space. The reporting is great; we are able to obtain critical business reports and infrastructure/usage information very easily. The solution’s user interface for managing the on-prem environment is good. What I find valuable is restoring the complete server. Restoring files is also valuable, but I like restoring the server because you don't have to rebuild a new one.One of the most valuable features is the encryption which helps save you from ransomware. Because the data is already encrypted, it cannot be encrypted again. The Command Center is provided from the web interface. You can back up the data for everybody, but also you can give everybody the ability to view and restore their data. For example, if a laptop, machine, or environment is owned by X, then X can look in and see the environment and data that he has backed up. He can see everything that he owns and can manage the environment as he wishes. It gives him an excellent view of his environment and infrastructure. Also, if you are a service provider, you can back up data for multiple companies and give everyone an interface for their environment to manage, backup, and restore data. Commvault has done excellent work in this area. The data is well-protected. It doesn't age off until it's copied. That's a big feature right there. When you reach the end of your retention, it does not expire until the secondary copy is completed. That allows you to hold onto data that otherwise would have aged off by retention. I like that feature. It's hard to just delete or lose data using the Commvault platform.

The SQL Backup and Restore is very easy.Cohesity's web-scale architecture enables us to scale up as needed. The ease of use and the GUI have really been most valuable to us. Configuring the system to do what we need is simple and straight forward and a lot of guesswork has been removed. One of my favorite features with Cohesity is Kroll for Exchange item-level recovery. The software is simple to use and fast. The product is easy to put in place. All backups are done very quickly. It's easy to perform restores. What I prefer in the product is its simplicity. There are no useless settings to define, and everything is ready after the initial setup.Cohesity is extremely easy to use and intuitive. After linking a cloud subscription, like Azure for example (AWS and Google are also supported), you can "spin" a VM onto the cloud from any backup snapshot. The restores are easy to do and have made it so that we can incorporate restores into our troubleshooting processes. The most valuable features are the rapid VM restores and the ability to quickly find files and download them directly to my desktop so that I can put them where I need them to be.

The solution’s ransomware recovery, from a security perspective, is one of the biggest features of the product. We don't have to worry about the operational complexity of air-gapped backups and can rely more on the immutability approach. It is a highly valued feature in this solution. The initial setup is easy. The ease of use is the most valuable feature. It is a very simple system compared to just about any other back up technology. It is extremely easy to use and very versatile.I don't know if it is the best or the worst but it's very easy to install and very easy to balance. Sometimes that it's a problem because the installer of these data gets extremely scared because it's so easy. The product is easy to install, easy to balance, and easy to work with. Another really good point is the instant recovery. The live mount reduces complexity.I would rate the solution's web interface at eight out of ten. It's just fantastic and intuitive. It's so easy to use. I've never done any formal training on Rubrik, but I was able to quickly come to grips with its capabilities. The archiving, off-of-box, is awesome. It lets you put your data where you want it and gives you the peace of mind of having more than one copy of it. And it's smart about the way that it does the archiving. It doesn't just copy one-for-one. It does all of its processing of the deduplication and compression before it sends it off to the archive, which helps with our cloud costs. The Live Mount is one of the most valuable features Rubrik has. It gives me an opportunity to run DR testing. For any patching or DR testing that I need to do, I'm able to run it as if it were my production system but, in reality, it's just a copy of my production system.

Cons
What I need is deeper CLI documentation for both QCommand and SQL queries. The software is good, but I always have issues with the documentation and, especially, the communication regarding new functionality. Commvault has a new maintenance release every three months, and it's always hard to know exactly what has changed in the software. They have improved a bit on that topic by communicating what has changed, but there is still a lot of room for improvement on that side. The solution requires constant attention. Commvault is very complex. We are constantly making adjustments and working through hotfixes, updates, and issues.Suppose I am restoring a particular file. If I want to restore the permissions only from that particular folder, that is not possible. I have to restore all the data for that particular folder. If there was an option to just restore the permissions, that would be better. We get an alarm if a lot of files are deleted, for example. That could look like ransomware, even if it is not.It takes a lot of technical expertise to implement. Commvault could increase the training it provides to customers and partners.I would like them to keep working on the new web interface to migrate out of the old interface because the old interface is a bit complex. It was driving customers away because of the complexity. If they migrate everything (100 percent of the features), this would make the product be perfect.Commvault likes to be ahead of the game when it comes to merging with other platforms, but sometimes it's before they have the solution truly baked in. Office 365 is an example. I feel that my company might be a litmus test for their solution, because we have such a large environment. Some of the promised solutions that we received from Commvault were more like testing solutions. They weren't really validated, meaning they were possibilities. There have been a lot of hot fixes for the solution that we're using right now, more than we expected.

The support team sometimes takes a long time to resolve issues, although, in our experience, these have been specific things like SQL blobs. The one area where we would like to see additional improvements is with reporting. There are very granular reports from each grid. There are also some built-in reports within Helios (SAS Management Console) that offers basic reporting. However, for complex, large-enterprise environments, a more robust reporting engine that supports detailed audit reporting and enhanced ad hoc reports would be welcome. The product is still young and is continually improving. There have been a couple of buggy releases in the software that have caused us minor issues, so possibly some better QA before releasing would prove to be useful. We have also been inquiring about new app and functionality via the Marketplace that was teased months back but has yet to come to fruition.Cohesity cluster upgrades have not been as easy as a single button click. They are a manual process that requires upgrading each node into a cluster individually. We have Oracle databases running on Linux servers in our environment and we have found the Oracle backups were quite complex to setup. The GUI is in need of improvement. We would love to see direct compatibility with HPE Simplivity, which we also leverage. The error handling could be improved.

There is room for improvement through a further extension of their Office 365 backup platform. In addition, it's still a bit cost-prohibitive to backup NAS. Those would be the two primary areas for improvement. The solution needs to be more secure and needs to better protect against ransomware. They have what's called an organization which means different groups of access to Rubrik, but the alerting only goes to the admins. My suggestion to Rubrik is to make sure that the separate organizations or groups of users get the appropriate alerting. The recovery of Oracle databases is too complicated. It is not something that helps the DBA, the Database Administrator, but it should be done by the backup person like many other solutions. Everything is ready for the DBA to recover the database. It is a way of doing things, but I don't think you should give the backup people the ability to do it.User interface could be improved. We would like to be able to do granular restores directly from Exchange. Also, more granular management of VM backups would help. The deployment and configuration of the backup service is something that could be streamlined a little bit, particularly when you're trying to do a SQL workload. You have to install a backup service on the server. You only have to do it once and then you're done, but you have to do that on every server that you want to protect.[A] feature that the product can improve on is being able to restore Active Directory at a more granular level. For example, it would be good if we could restore actual memberships for users instead of the entire server.

Pricing and Cost Advice
We work with Commvault and a partner on our environment needs according to capacity, licensing, pricing, components, modules, etc. Additional costs depend on your backup needs. We have checked some other products, but we are not testing them because price-wise, Commvault is better than the other solutions. It is cheaper than Veeam. It was not very popular because of its previous cost, but they have been working on the pricing, and now anyone can afford to use Commvault. They changed the modeling criteria for their pricing. Previously, there was only the capacity modeling based on your content capacity. In this case, they would give you a license and you would have to pay it. Now, most of the environment is virtualized so you can have the best CPU, VMs, etc. You buy whatever you need and pay for what you need.We went from Veritas NetBackup to Commvault. We switched due to upfront licensing and costs. We have more visibility into what we're actually purchasing. It seemed like, overall, the cost of Commvault was cheaper. The complete license gives us options for all the features. Commvault does not license based on storage or the management components. It can integrate with any storage vendor. That means that when we are out of storage and need more, we can integrate without additional licensing. In my opinion, Commvault needs to reduce the licensing cost by 20 to 40 percent to make it cost-efficient.Commvault licensing is a perpetual license so only the support is being renewed yearly. There is a bit of cost involved with signing up the entire solution. It's not a cheap solution.

Pricing, setup costs, etc. are pretty typical. The initial cost for Cohesity was less than other products the we evaluated. Cohesity's pricing does offer benefits as DR target costs are less than other solutions. You are not charged for DataProtect licensing for target DR data consumption.Sizing is important and it is easy to overestimate.I expect the system to probably pay off within the first two years. With respect to pricing, make sure that you look at both Rubrik and Cohesity as they are very similar and are quite competitive. We purchased support from Cohesity to ensure that should we face an issue, we don't have to deal with different service providers.

We do perpetual licensing... It was all based on the amount of storage we needed to use. We did a cost analysis compared to Tivoli and it was in line with other solutions. We pay yearly and it's based on the number of bricks. It is a great value, but its cost is still a bit high.

If you do a head to head challenge with the two products capabilities, Rubrik will win out every time. Cohesity's UI is a little clunky and childish and Rurik's is simple, elegant and intuitive. Rubrik has amazingly simple scale-out and you will not beat the search functionality and time to recovery. On top of that, their support is beyond top notch. I evaluated both products before ultimately going with Rubrik and haven't looked back since! Compare customers and awards alone to give you an idea of how Rubrik is leading the way in Data Management both on premise and in the cloud. Happy to give more input if anyone needs it :) Trust me, you wont be disappointed choosing Rubrik.

The biggest difference is that Cohesity is able to backup physical servers whereas Rubrik isn't able to back them up. Instant restore is more robust over Cohesity than it is over Rubrik. Not that we have had to restore hundreds of servers at once, but I've seen it done. Rubrik will crawl to a halt if you tried to restore hundreds of VM's at once. Cohesity has the same search ability as Rubrik as well as every other feature and intuitiveness as Rubrik, but costs less. I haven't followed up to see if Rubrik has a cloud edition like Cohesity, but this is a good indicator of the innovation that we will see from Cohesity vs the cobbled together open source software that is Rubrik. Cohesity wrote a lot of their own components and file system.

We chose Cohesity over Rubrik. The POC was very close, but our techs preferred the Cohesity UI and the ability to restore VMs to a standalone ESXi host, which Rubrik can only do via API.

When looking at both solutions, I originally had a leaning preference to Rubrik, but that quickly faded when looking at demos of both the solutions. Cohesity and Rubrik basically have the same feature sets and do the same in the backup realm. If you compare they both use Policy based backups, they both integrate very well into VMware, they both do near instant recoveries, they both use scale-out file system, they both have search capabilities, and many more capabilities.

What ultimately lead us down to choosing Cohesity, was the sale team. Rubrik ignored us, sent us a full price sheet and never gave us the time of day. Cohesity setup meetings, helped size out our infrastructure (even if we didn't go with their solution), and their sales team was very laid back and not bombarding us with calls and e-mails about if we had decided yet.

After learning more and more about Cohesity and Mohit Aron, it is a company I truly believe will continue changing not just the backup space for a long time, but the secondary storage space. Their technology and staff are the best in the industry and they help do anything needed. I believe Cohesity provides way more than Rubrik ever will, simply because they are focusing on the entire secondary storage landscape and not just backup. You can do analytics, test/dev, automated policy assignment, etc. While I cannot speak to the cloud functionality because we utilize two clusters with site to site replication, everything else just works. I'm not sure the accuracy of those utilizing Rubrik that are speaking for Cohesity's clunky interface, because the UI is painstakingly easy and intuitive. Rubrik may very well be the same, but look up videos of Demos and I would say the UI is not a reason to pick one over the other. The support from Cohesity is industry leading and I have been shocked from the first ticket submitted, when at 2AM you submit a ticket and get a response within minutes, they are quick, efficient, and even proactive in fixing problems you may not have even knew existed. They are constantly coming out with additional features and they truly listen to what the users actually want or need.

I end with the contention that I would invest in Cohesity in a second, if they ever went Public and willingly will refer anyone and everyone I hear having a backup problem to Cohesity.

Oh as a side note, Mohit seems to truly be a great leader, I've listened to a few of his interviews, and I believe the leaders of a company make or break it. Two shocking things that I think need to be more widely known. He refuses to have an office (wants to sit with his "troops") and he sets time every week to still code on the platform.

Answering the "View box" issue that Paul mentioned, is that Cohesity provides "View boxes" to be able to provide flexibility and security on the data you want to store. Taken from the Cohesity's site "A View Box is a logical division of a partition, that contains one or more filesystems. Each of these View Boxes encrypt data ‘stored’ by them using their own independent keys. This allows for robust data isolation. For example, if IT data and financial data are on different view boxes, a breach on the IT data will not automatically risk your financial data." Of course, if you want Global Dedupe and are not concerned about siloing off data then you can always just make one View Box that provides global dedupe (it is also dedupe's before replication).

Rubrik is quite simply one of the easy products we have ever had to implement. Less an hour after delivery we had the system racked, configured and ingesting backups.

Interface is slick, recovery times near instance, seemless tiering to the cloud and no need to spend time managing the service on a daily basis.

Multi-tier backup architecture - no thanks! Rubrik all the way for us and anyone purchasing wont be disappointed.

Happy to be contacted if anyone would like further details on our usage/setup.

We chose Cohesity over Rubrik

Offered better flexibility can act as an SMB/NFS or object store, can use with existing backup software or with DataProtect. Data Protect licenses per TB so don’t need to license the full cluster if you don’t want to. Allows native Oracle RMAN to go direct to NFS without needing to use a software wrapper so DBAs are happy. Performance and ease of scalability are great. Software is simple. Options for virtual appliance for remote offices and cloud edition for azure/aws.

Rubrik is the better solution!! Between the great support and the ease of use, you just can't beat it.
