We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Commvault helps to ensure broad coverage with the discovery of unprotected workloads. This is important. From the moment that we set it up, we mostly have customers telling us what they need to back up. Then, you can list the machines that are not yet protected. Sometimes, we can see that they are unaware of this, and say, "We didn't know that those servers were not protected yet," or "We did not back them up yet."""Commvault has support for backing up operating systems and servers.""This product has allowed us to recover data when we've had issues.""Its compression and deduplication allow us to store more backups and save storage space. The reporting is great; we are able to obtain critical business reports and infrastructure/usage information very easily.""Security measures, including encryption and threat detection, contribute significantly to data protection, safeguarding against unauthorized access and cyber threats.""In the VM, we have Live Recovery, Live Mount, and Live Sync.""The ability to manage everything from a single pane of glass is another major advantage.""Restoring is very fast. In testing, I did a restore for a single item from a mailbox. Within a minute, I had the message back in my mailbox. So, it didn't take hours or days. Obviously, there will be a limit. If we suddenly go into DR and have to restore five terabytes of emails for people, then it will take a couple of days, which would be acceptable. For general usage, where we have to do the odd restore, we have never had issues. It happens within minutes."

"RecoverPoint replicates workloads fast.""The most valuable feature is that it is journal-based and you don't have to replicate a lot of data.""Point-in-time recovery and ease of deployment are valuable.""The solution is quite stable. We haven't experienced any kind of bug or glitch. We haven't experienced crashes.""One of the standout features of Dell RecoverPoint for Virtual Machines is its real-time data protection capability.""The most valuable features are the data center recovery administration and the time of recovery.""Continuous replication with lower RTO and RPO is the most innovative feature. Its tight integration with VMware for VMware VMs is also valuable.""The installation is straightforward if the version you have is compatible with your infrastructure."

Cons
"The HTML interface is a remarkable improvement. However, there are still some features that are not available in that interface that are available in the Java console, but I'm sure that will come with time.""The price of Commvault HyperScale X could improve.""It takes a lot of technical expertise to implement. Commvault could increase the training it provides to customers and partners.""The interface could be improved because it has two different consoles.""Commvault is complex even if the product has comprehensive solutions and covers pretty much every technology out there. There's no unified way to manage all of the products on one single console.""Commvault likes to be ahead of the game when it comes to merging with other platforms, but sometimes it's before they have the solution truly baked in. Office 365 is an example. I feel that my company might be a litmus test for their solution, because we have such a large environment. Some of the promised solutions that we received from Commvault were more like testing solutions. They weren't really validated, meaning they were possibilities. There have been a lot of hot fixes for the solution that we're using right now, more than we expected.""Compared to Rubrik, MongoDB Data Protector, and NetBackup, Commvault is better. The licensing team was quite tricky recently because they stopped the unlimited files for that license. Commvault made a bank of 500GB only, a node-based license can take it, which is disappointing. Reporting needs to be more granular. Also, there should be a showback of data being backed up, and the backup cost to share the cost internally with the department.""The initial installation is straightforward and took approximately two days. However, the process could be more simple."

"It can have better integration. It would be good if, in addition to VMware VM, it can also support other hypervisors. I also want to see support for Oracle databases. As of now, it supports only SQL and Exchange. It would be good to also support other databases.""The solution could improve by being more easier to use. However, once you have used it for a while it becomes easier. Additionally, there could be better support and compatibility with management by having a command-line interface. This would be beneficial for the customers.""It should have features for recovering a group of virtual machines and full-scale security. For recovering all the VMs at once, they don't have a GUI option, and we have to use the command line.""The configuration process seems a bit challenging, and the installation takes a bit longer than expected.""In the next release of this software, I would like to see options that help to decrease the bandwidth required, such as compressing the data.""It would be good to have a critical application on the customer side.""The solution is not easy to use. It's actually quite hard. If it could be simplified it might be better for the end user.""I would like to have the HTML 5 interface working because it is currently not functioning with the VMware environment."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "If budget allows using the per socket license and not the agent based with per GB counter for Dedup is the way to go."
  • "There is now a subscription based licence option that, depending on your environment, could offer a more efficient method to licence the solution if you are OPEX cost driven rather than CAPEX."
  • "New licensing is easy and affordable."
  • "Licensing could be better explained. Sometimes, it's unclear what features are available in different licensing models."
  • "Compared to other competitors and vendors the pricing is fair."
  • "In my experience, compared to solutions like Veritas and Veeam, while they do have their technical pluses and minuses, Commvault can save you on average forty percent initially, and then twenty to twenty-five percent annually."
  • "The price could perhaps be lower as well."
  • "Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers."

  • "This is not a very cheap solution and compared to others, it is expensive."
  • "This is an expensive product."
  • "Pricing-wise, it is pretty much fair for any customer who only has a VMware environment. Licensing is based on the number of VMs that you want to protect at any given point in time. Licensing is not based on size."
  • "There is a license required for this solution and the pricing depends on how many virtual machines you have."
  • "It was a part of a backup solution. So, it was free for us."
