Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Metallic helped me to restore the data within an hour, which is much faster than restoring from Microsoft services.""Commvault is a very stable product.""They have a strong development team and are market leaders in the space.""The most valuable feature is the deduplication ratio. It saves most of our space and reduces the network traffic.""This product has allowed us to recover data when we've had issues.""I'm a big fan of the reporting. You can build your own reports; it's very customizable. You can have individual reports going to groups of people or individuals. You can have them go out multiple times a day. It's basically a free-for-all as far as reporting goes. If anybody wants a specific job report every day, you can build it, schedule it, and have it go out and never touched it again. It's pretty nice.""The use of hyperscale storage hardware and Commvault software has allowed us to create a large storage pool and achieve significant savings in our back-end storage costs.""It's a complete software that can protect all the main applications. Perhaps that's the feature I like most. The integration with the NetApp and other apps is also very nice."

Cons
"They need to improve when it comes to large, video file archiving. They're good, but they have not met my expectations as a customer in this area.""I just wanted to compare the features, which are there in EMC NetWorker, which are not available in Commvault. We have things using Networker.""The pricing could be more flexible in terms of licensing.""They can improve the security level for Windows. When mapping to the Windows, Commvault can take full control over data volumes so that the attacker can't delete the volume data, but the Windows admin can access the volumes. It would be great to block access at that level.""This solution can be complex and difficult to administer because it supports all of the many platforms, so it would help if they could simplify it.""The integration of Metallic could improve. It would be a benefit if Metallic could integrate with multiple applications or platforms.""In an upcoming release, the reports could be better.""The solution's breadth and depth of cloud support are good, but could be better. Some cloud features that are common-sense, especially on AWS, are not completely integrated yet in the product. They are a work-in-progress."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "If budget allows using the per socket license and not the agent based with per GB counter for Dedup is the way to go."
  • "There is now a subscription based licence option that, depending on your environment, could offer a more efficient method to licence the solution if you are OPEX cost driven rather than CAPEX."
  • "New licensing is easy and affordable."
  • "Licensing could be better explained. Sometimes, it's unclear what features are available in different licensing models."
  • "Compared to other competitors and vendors the pricing is fair."
  • "In my experience, compared to solutions like Veritas and Veeam, while they do have their technical pluses and minuses, Commvault can save you on average forty percent initially, and then twenty to twenty-five percent annually."
  • "The price could perhaps be lower as well."
  • "Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers."
