Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It is extremely stable.""It has given the company an almost zero possibility of downtime.""The ROI is great on this product.""StarWind allows us to move virtual machines from one physical host to another, which greatly reduces the downtime required for maintenance.""When using new (warranty) servers, you can forget about the storage service for several years. The users will not even notice the failure of two servers out of three.""Having the ability to scale horizontally if needed is a huge plus for future growth.""StarWind saved us about 80% of our storage costs over our old solution.""The most valuable feature of this solution is the support. They are excellent and you can learn a lot from the support team."

"I'd have to say that the biggest improvement gained by using SANsymphony has to be the performance of the product.""During the maintenance periods, on any part of the storage or VMware migration, we have had no downtime.""Active-active is the most valuable aspect for us.""It is a stable solution.""The use of the RAM cache allows you to speed up the writing and reading of data while also allowing for a possible increase in performance by increasing the RAM on the servers.""An advantage of SANsymphony is its ease of use, especially when installing or upgrading the system.""SANsymphony is flexible, with many potential options for implementation. SANsymphony's can be used with VMware, Hyper-V, or even with a hypervisor agnostic approach. It can also be used for strictly physical non-virtualized solutions.""DataCore SANsymphony's stability is okay."

"Installation is straightforward because it's a vSAN. It only took one or two days.""Lenovo ThinkAgile VX Series' deployment is easy. We are a tier-one platinum partner who is into multiple implementations.""The VX machines are scalable.""We find the setup quite straightforward and very easy."

Cons
"It took a bit of knowledge and support to put in place but once installed it works fine. Migration (HyperV) from one server to another sometimes takes longer than expected but there is no data loss even if the host crashes.""It would be great if it provided thin provisioned virtual disks.""It would help us if the vendor continues to release software updates for earlier versions of the Windows operating systems.""I would like to see improvements in the documentation area.""Performance when in storage-separate configuration needs to be improved.""The StarWind Management Console is available only for Microsoft Windows/Windows Server, and should also be available for Linux and macOS, as it would reduce implementation costs.""Though I have learned some of the nuances with the upgrading of firmware/windows/etc., it would be nice to have a more efficient method of doing so.""StarWind really needs to market its product more."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"Right now, the version used is run on Microsoft Windows Server. Having a Linux version or even an appliance would be better as it would eliminate the use of additional licensing for another piece of hardware.""I found it a little unnecessary to have to rename the configurations within the graphics console in order to have unique names.""The solution could be better packaged and marketed.""It would be ideal if they were providing archive licensing with the ability to create a second pool on existing storage nodes.""I'd like to see the company make the renewal of the software cheaper.""For customers or technicians that don't speak and understand English, it could be great to have other languages support, all the more so given the number of countries in which SanSymphony is used.""I think the performance reporting can be improved by adding historical statistics into a database for the purpose of comparing.""Management could be improved. The management console sometimes reacts very slowly."

More DataCore SANsymphony Cons →

"Lenovo ThinkAgile VX Series needs to improve its stability. Its resolution should be faster.""The user management could be a bit better. It's something they could improve upon in future releases.""With the VX machines, the clients often confuse the hardware itself with the services and resources. VMs are configured according to resources - memory, hard disk capacity, and network. These resources, including memory and processor, are actually shared on the VX Series. So, if the server's processor is underpowered or unreliable for the VMs, many of the VMs will encounter issues. Ideally, the physical server configuration should align more closely with the needs of the virtual servers.""Support could be better."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."
  • More StarWind Virtual SAN Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "In my case, the licensing per terabytes is very high and it must be licensed for each extra functionality."
  • "The pricing and licensing are better with DataCore."
  • "The cost is at the same level as other storage solutions and it is easy to understand the licensing."
  • "Make sure you are made aware of the annual subscription cost when purchasing."
  • "Pricing has improved but it is still expensive."
  • "This product has a good ratio between quality and price. In many cases, it's less expensive to work with DataCore than other storage systems."
  • "This solution allows the use of off-the-shelf hardware and charges by the TB of storage."
  • "The solution is cost effective."
  • More DataCore SANsymphony Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "You need to pay a license for additional features. If we need to monitor hardware for the automatic alert notification, we need to pay them."
  • "The tool's pricing is competitive."
  • "There is room for improvement in the licensing structure, maybe. Regarding sizing the resources, sometimes it's difficult to calculate/compute them based on the client's requirements."
