Quotes From Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"It's the leader in backup and archiving.""It's very stable.""It's a complete software that can protect all the main applications. Perhaps that's the feature I like most. The integration with the NetApp and other apps is also very nice.""We are using a KVM system in our cloud, and this solution works very well with it.""The solution provides us with a single platform to move, manage, and recover our data across on-premise locations. Some of the guys have been using it to move a virtual machine from VMware to the Microsoft solution, Hyper-V. They back it up and then they restore to the different virtual machine provider, and that works great.""The multi-tenancy is the most valuable feature for us because it's the only software that is fully multi-tenant and that has all the features we need to provide to all our tenants. It provides us with advanced features for MySQL and Oracle, among other platforms""The most valuable feature is sharing data sets like they're in a private cloud. We call it our "private cloud" because we can share anything that is inside our backup set with our colleagues or with other people, and yet, everything is still in Belgrade, in Serbia. It's not somewhere else on cloud servers. Everything is in our environment.""I'm a big fan of the reporting. You can build your own reports; it's very customizable. You can have individual reports going to groups of people or individuals. You can have them go out multiple times a day. It's basically a free-for-all as far as reporting goes. If anybody wants a specific job report every day, you can build it, schedule it, and have it go out and never touched it again. It's pretty nice."

"We have a lot of backups, and this tool helps us with the RMAN Backup.""The product is good for backups.""We love the instant recovery functionality. It's very useful.""It was very simple to deploy the solution to the client that you wanted to backup.""I think the brand is very good. Support is also very nice for end users and integration with EMC products for businesses.""We sell Avamar with Data Domain. Data Domain and Avamar work really well together and their compression ratios are very high compared to Veeam, Commvault, and all the other backup software on the market.""The backup is the solution's most valuable feature. It's very reliable.""Avamar's source side deduplication is very strong, it can easily back up remote sites' data, and not much bandwidth is required on the Avamar side."

"The best feature of the solution is the user interface.""The solution offers a 100% guarantee that if it's backed up you will be able to restore it onto any platform you want.""The fact that it can take a snapshot of everything on a server and replicate it on another server in real-time is the most valuable feature.""The general backup for replication and virtual standby are the most valuable aspects. It does what it says it does. It's a decent tool for not a big budget.""The solution's most valuable aspect is its ability to back up a physical server to another physical or virtual server.""Just knowing that the data is easily recoverable is our ROI. It definitely lowers risk.""Built-in encryption helps to secure our data as it travels from our on-site server to our off-site backup server.""The compression and deduplication features have helped to save on storage costs."

Cons
"Its competitor, Veeam, includes backup and replication in the same product. I don't know if Commvault has it or not, but they should if they don't.""The back of virtual machines needs improvement. I know they're working on it. They're always doing new things but I think they still have a little bit more to do.""I think the one thing that could be improved is the customer experience. The interface should be more user friendly.""This solution can be complex and difficult to administer because it supports all of the many platforms, so it would help if they could simplify it.""Just to keep it running is time-consuming. There are five people on my team. Commvault was supposed to be one of the less time-consuming solutions, but in reality it takes 60 percent of our time just to keep it running, and that's not even fine-tuning it; that's just to keep it running.""There is room for improvement in its user interface and web console, called Command Center. They are improving it every year so if they continue in that direction, I think it will be a very reliable console.""They can always improve the interface design to make it easier. Sometimes, you need to click two or three times to do something. They should look at what tabs are used most and make them more accessible, to cut the time it takes to get to that information.""Command Center definitely gives us a complete view of our data. But finding some of the granular, very small items that we sometimes have to find, such as auxiliary copies for tapes, I still find that it's easier to navigate and, sometimes, only possible to find them using the CommCell tool."

More Commvault Cons »

"There are limitations when trying to use this solution with Hyper-V.""The client caches and deduplication system have a few problems.""The licensing model is not very flexible. Every time we upgrade our storage size, we need to upgrade the Avamar license.""It was challenging to back up our Exchange database, which is one of the reasons we did not continue using this solution.""The interface could be more helpful for people.""I think they could also move more towards cloud solutions. It already has some cloud tiering, but I think that could be more extensive. They should work with all cloud providers and I think in the future they will be on all cloud platforms.""The configuration and expansion aspects of the solution need improvement. They're complicated and don't really integrate well.""EMC has discontinued their Avamar hardware version. They only advertise the Avamar virtual edition."

More Dell EMC Avamar Cons »

"Rapid Recovery can only backup the machine or disc, but it can't back up from folders, and files, and things like that.""Sometimes, when we have certain batches for Windows, it needs to be restarted. When it's restarted, the service is configured as a delayed start. Sometimes, you need to wait too long until it rights itself, or you have to do it manually.""You can only take a snapshot from a virtual environment. It should have the ability to take snapshots from both a virtual and physical environment.""It's buggy. That's a big problem. We're arranging to get rid of it. We're going to switch to Veeam.""The on-premises deployment model shouldn't have a maintenance fee. If there's going to be technical support, they need it to be free or it should be paid on upon adopting the solution.""The terminology didn't seem easily available. When I go to the website, it is hard to search for things. You get all the articles, then you finally get the search button. They need the search at the top of the knowledge base. Then, on occasion, if you get an error message in the system, which is very important, it says, "Click here for more information," but I never get more information. The search engine doesn't find it or it is some weird error. It has never worked for me.""When you do a full backup, all of the memory resources on the server are used, which is something that should be improved.""It is quite surprising to me that the configuration cannot be backed up automatically, and I think that Rapid Recovery should have an option for scheduled configuration backup."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"The price could perhaps be lower as well.""Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers.""Our yearly cost is around €20,000... The cost is based on the number of users and the amount of data. They sell it per terabyte.""There is a bit of cost involved with signing up the entire solution. It's not a cheap solution.""Commvault licensing is a perpetual license so only the support is being renewed yearly.""The complete license gives us options for all the features. Commvault does not license based on storage or the management components. It can integrate with any storage vendor. That means that when we are out of storage and need more, we can integrate without additional licensing. In my opinion, Commvault needs to reduce the licensing cost by 20 to 40 percent to make it cost-efficient.""We went from Veritas NetBackup to Commvault. We switched due to upfront licensing and costs. We have more visibility into what we're actually purchasing. It seemed like, overall, the cost of Commvault was cheaper.""It is cheaper than Veeam."

"This solution is less expensive than Veeam for us, although it depends on the customer because we get a great discount.""I'm not sure, but perhaps the pricing could be done better at the moment.""The price is the main thing I'd like to see them change. If they can come down in price, that would be a good thing. It's very cost competitive in the entry level range, because Veeam pricing is much cheaper than Avamar.""It was approximately $70-80,000 when it was under support, but right now EMC has not been supporting this product for two years.""Licensing was generally on a per VM or terabyte basis. They changed their licensing model a couple of times and turned it into socket-based licensing, which is an improvement in their licensing model.""When it comes to competition the price is not what is important, it's not the problem.""The price of this product should be lower.""It was very expensive before, but after integrating it with Dell EMC Avamar Data Protection suite licensing, we are getting better discounts."

More Dell EMC Avamar Pricing and Cost Advice »

"It's very expensive which is why I want to drop it. They charge us per core and we have a six-core server. It's expensive to pay for maintenance charges. I want to switch to something cheaper.""It is a little expensive. However, I haven't compared it to other solutions. Being a nonprofit, it is always good to have nonprofit discounts on products.""I don't think the licensing for the product is very expensive.""Licensing fees are based on the amount of data that you want to store, which is related to how many customers you want to cover.""I believe the basic license comes with six terabytes, whereas a lot of the other ones are four terabytes. From the price point, it seemed a lot better than the comparative models, such as Datto, Barracuda, and some of the others. I believe Barracuda was about $15,000 for four terabytes, and Quest was around $12,000 for six terabytes. Pricing is based on the period. There is just the maintenance fee that you have to pay annually, or you can pay for a three-year or four-year contract. This includes Premier Support."
