Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Given the high availability of the server cluster, we were able to reduce separate physical servers onto one hyper-converged cluster - this saved in OPEX and CAPEX costs immediately, along with licensing costs of the Windows Server licenses.""It enables us to provide more solution options for our clients, with the reassurance that, when implemented, they will be efficient and stable.""One of the most valuable features is the way it sets up the virtual SAN, because we don't have to buy a separate appliance for storage. It uses the existing storage on the servers, which is definitely a cost savings for us.""We are able to do maintenance by bringing down one node at a time, rather than having to schedule a complete shutdown.""StarWind vSAN has allowed us to grow rapidly while still providing flexibility and reliability.""The StarWind Virtual SAN provides a clever and unique solution to the Computing Split Brain problem.""The iSCSI protocol is quite simple to configure.""We like their high availability. It reduces the downtime for our entire organization's environment."

"We've had no issues with scaling the solution.""The most valuable feature is high availability.""The support team responds quickly.""Saves us a lot of space in the data center.""The support is highly responsive.""The solution is quite stable.""The catalog of APIs for automation has been most valuable, although they are quite limited.""The integration with AWS is a valuable feature."

More Dell PowerFlex Pros →

"The solution's best feature is its simplicity. It's so simple to deploy it. You've got the VMware, and it's own appliance. It is really helpful. The system is online within half a day and saves so much time.""What I like the most is that it is easy to implement, easy deployment and that it's easy to manage.""The most valuable feature is that you can assign a volume to an off-shore workload on the fly.""The most valuable feature is the low management overhead, and the lower skill set required to manage it.""The solution's hardware is great.""When we compare it to normal hardware servers, I'd say it is quite easy to configure and deploy.""The most valuable features are the deduplication and the compression features."

Cons
"When StarWind Virtual SAN for vSphere nodes go offline unexpectedly, the nodes have to re-sync disks fully which takes a long time. We had a power failure and when both nodes came online, VMware vSphere didn't see StarWind disks before I manually re-scanned them form ESXi administration console even though it should happen automatically""Perhaps the developer should refine the product management through PowerShell.""If there was one feature I would like to see it would be a built-in subsystem for managing UPS backups shutdown procedures providing a way to initiate VM shutdown on all host servers, shut down the host servers, then put the fault-tolerant mirroring in standby, and finally shut down the StarWind SANs.""There is no IPv6 support. That is our only issue at this time.""An extended trial period would serve as a way to get clean insights into the technology's adaptability and alignment with their specific needs before committing to long-term integration.""The product can include a more simple way of synchronization after a forced shutdown as the current process has a few more steps to check that hosts have synchronized and this can be automated.""The most disappointing side of the application is the free edition. There used to be GUI attached. That has recently changed to only CLI management of the application.""It should reclaim white spaces after big files are deleted."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"Licensing restrictions can be frustrating.""The solution must be more flexible.""I would like to see a more user-friendly interface.""They should provide continuous support for data migration.""The biggest issue with the solution is that it doesn't support Hyper V. It's a big problem.""The storage capability must be improved.""Compared to similar solutions, Dell PowerFlex is not cost-effective and has room for improvement.""It would be great to get earlier access to beta builds because we have to develop providers on our own. The APIs and enablers for custom automation could also be improved."

More Dell PowerFlex Cons →

"Currently, there is no support for the servers that are not in the cluster.""In the next release, I would like to see support for Docker and containers.""There should be more provisioning capabilities within the solution.""The solution's storage size could be improved.""Dell needs to do a lot of work to simplify the maintenance and life-cycle upgrades for the product.""We are not always advised of new features or updates, so we must research to stay up to date.""The cost of using the public cloud deployment is astronomical."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."
