We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
The most valuable feature is the performance because you can back up data really quickly. This is a superior and reliable backup system that can handle large capacities with little management. The backup is very secure. The deduplication using EMC is very good. We are able to make systems and handle random cloning. EMC is a very stable solution for making backups. The product provides good backup and compression services. The solution's most valuable feature is the integrated deduplication function. It's very easy to use the domain once it's been set up. The interface is also user-friendly.The most valuable features are the deduplication and compression and the Data Domain Boost. We have never had any issues with Data Domain. It has been stable.

The most valuable feature is the ability to verify that backups are valid.Features with the most value are Instant VM Recovery, SQL Explorer and Exchange Explorer. Before Veeam, we had backup infrastructure sprawl. Veeam was able to reduce our overall backup windows while reducing our dedicated backup infrastructure.Vendor integration for many of the enterprise features have allowed for us to have greater performance from our storage vendors further improving on our commitments to protect our clients' data. The user interface is good and it is very easy to use.The whole replication aspect of the solution is excellent because it compresses the data so well.Very flexible, all-in-one solution. We get a lot of features with Veeam and we are happy to use this solution. After shutdown, the servers here automatically turn off and Veeam is keeping up all this. It's tension free work.

Cons
I would like to see better integration and support for backing up to cloud providers such as Alibaba Cloud. The product lacks some security features that would make it more stand-alone and integrated. They should reduce the CPC cost to customers. The product is becoming very expensive. The licensing model was the biggest concern for our company, but the poor support after the initial implementation is of equal concern. The pricing could be better, but it's still not too expensive. The firmware upgrades could be simplified. I'm in the process of struggling to upgrade right now.We have had deduplication and replication issues. When we used another backup software we noticed that it didn't have the same issues. We are not able to deal directly with the OEM we have to go to their partners in Nigeria.

We would like to see support for some additional storage systems.Physical backup is always where room for improvement could be but Veeam has always stated they are not going in that direction.Multithreading of health check process: This can take too much time to process on large jobs and/or large VMs.Additional executive summary reports for the entire infrastructure would be a nice to have. One challenge that we have encountered was on the long-term retention of data. Be sure to look into a dedicated deduplication appliance.I would like to have the capability of backing up a physical machine, as opposed to just a VM.It would be ideal if users could know that their data is backed up and have some security functionality where you can actually use the backup to spin up a new cluster and take it from there.Needs better integration with cloud service providers.

Pricing and Cost Advice
This is one of the more expensive backup solutions on the market. There are many options in the pricing structure which can cause some confusion and necessitate the purchase of additional licensing. In Naira it was twenty-five or twenty-seven million (approximately $75,000 USD) for the implementation and maintenance cost for three years.Pricing is related to size. A lower range solution might be about $33,000. My customers use higher range versions with a price of around $100,000. That's the price for both the hardware and software.

Veeam is more reasonably priced than some competing products. We have increased our scalability while being able to free up senior resources from recovery activities. I estimate our overall savings to about $20,000 per year. The price of Veeam is much lower than the IBM solution. The product is competitively priced. The pricing is good and affordable. The price is slightly higher than its competitors. The price is great. It's software related, and I know that might be a good thing because it's a cheap solution to buy and we have been looking for a program for backup and they fit the bill.I would suggest to others that they buy the full license when purchasing this solution.

Both can be used to run a backup/replication. In the case of Veeam it's a backup software that can be used to set up your data protection policies: what to backup (data set, save set, etc.), how often to run a copy process (schedules, jobs). How long to keep the copy. The Veeam system can ask the clients (e.g. Oracle server) to run the backup, and then Veeam will manage the resulting copy.

Dell EMC Data Domain is an appliance - can be hardware or virtual edition. In general, you can think of it as about a backup repository with added functionality like replication, encryption, file lock (WORM), etc. It cannot ask the client to start the backup, neither it will not automatically delete/expire any data. But can be very easily integrated with leading backup software systems and with almost any application that has its own backup/restore module (like RMAN for Oracle). Then DD presents itself to the application as a backup device.

The answer is: use DD together with a supported backup system of your choice.

First of all, we need to know that both tools work great together. On one hand, Dell EMC DD is known for being such an efficient deduplication machine. You can store hundreds and hundreds of GB at a cost without any problem. The main issue would be during restoring times. When in need of a complete restore, DD needs to rebuild the Data, and that costs a little bit of time.

On the other hand, Veeam Backup its a tool, a program, purely software, that manages and makes backups. Veeam is capable of many different things. I'm going to talk about backups all the time to simplify things. Veeam manages backups from Virtual Machines. You can make backups of them to any repository that you wan, as of an SMB, local disk, remote server, etc.

In my opinion, there's no point in comparing DD and Veeam. You can use EMC Data Domain as an SMB repository for storing your backups. Using DD as a secondary repository is a good thing, you can store hundreds of TBs and have copies of your VM from months ago. If you plan to use DD as the main repo, you should have in mind that in case that a restore it's needed, you'll have to wait sometime for the DD to complete the restore. Writing is a beast, but reading the data on it can be a pain in the butt.

From what I know DD is a dedupe storage appliance that requires backup software such as EMC Avamar or Networker. Veeam Backup and Replication is a backup software that can integrate with DD also.

These are two different domains so it's not fair to compare.

If you are trying to compare dedupe ratios between DD and Veeam then, of course, DD will win as it is VM-based.

However, I personally would prefer Veeam and Exagrid combo if I would like to compare EMC Avamar/Networker with DD. Of course that all rely on what your needs and which vendor can address it in the best way possible rather than comparing vendors.

Team I have used both DD with Avamar and Veeam Backup, They are both great products and perform the job very well, my short answer is that Veeam is just a little bit more intuitive and user-friendly, The DD product seemed kind of counter-intuitive at times, once you understood how to perform a function I would always document it as it just was not that user-friendly. With Veeam the GUI is very intuitive and user-friendly and a little bit easier to navigate when you need to perform tasks. They both perform great data deduplication and compression. Hope this helps.
