We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
The All-Flash models are pretty fast for the vast majority of our remote workloads. We use replication for disaster recovery (DR), making our DR process much easier. It has reduced complexity. We have resolved IT challenges with this solution. It sped up our environment. We went from spinning disk to all-flash, which reduced our footprint. It has good performance. We can get almost real-time response times. The most valuable thing for our use case is the flexibility to have multiple-protocol support. It is pretty stable. I like the stability, because everything works like it should. We made it all redundant. So, we don't have anything to worry about.

They have a virtualization feature and, even if you do not want to buy that feature, you can have it as a trial for two to three months. If you have another brand of storage from another company, you can use this tool to transfer all your data from the old system to the new Storwize system, which really shortens the migration time.High availability and enhanced security; Proven dependability; Data compression with hardware acceleration; Advanced copy services features are all in this product. The GUI is very easy and performance is also good.Virtualization of external storage, while adding cache and speed to the external storage.

Cons
We would like to see the concept of Storage Groups brought back to this product line.I haven't seen the roadmap for this solution. It is missing some features, like deduplication.Because we can do synchronous replication between the two sites, this made the setup challenging for this piece. They did not know how to set this up initially. We ended up having to do bidirectional synchronous replication.I would like them to continue to build on the solution and expand on the functionality, like replication. We'd like to see a cheaper version of an all-flash array in that footprint.I would like to have secure mobile connectivity going forward. This would help me be more proactive. If you compare it with VMAX, where we communicate with the box through Solutions Enabler and there are a lot of commands and a lot of flexibility, the command line for Unity needs to enhanced.

I have looked at a few pages of a report I download and I saw a graph there regarding software-defined vendors. IBM is not in a good position on this graph. I know that they are working very hard on this, to make it much better and to get to a level where it's not only hardware but also software to provide a complete solution.GUI interface should be enhanced more as there is some issues in copy services.Replication features need improvement. Currently, they are there in the product, but I'm not sure as to how it works exactly.Events/log analysis tools.

Pricing and Cost Advice
Our CAPEX was close to $42,000 and operating costs are below $1000.Our costs are roughly $200,000 a year. The solution is extremely functional for the price that we pay for it. It is worth the investment. We purchased a five-year warranty.Compression is making a difference towards the amount of hardware that we need to purchase. The return on the investment was simply speeding up our entire vSphere stack, which allowed our developers and engineers to get their workloads done faster and simpler. We were experiencing VM snapshot times of 45 minutes to two or three hours, and it shrunk it down to under five minutes. It scales, but then you have to buy additional stuff. With the large Unity that we bought, it has saved us about one and a half rack space. That's our return on investment on our flash array. We also need less Fibre Channel connectivity.

The pricing has been very competitive for the last few years. IBM got to the point where they changed the pricing model and we feel very comfortable with the pricing. It's very competitive. Over the last two years, IBM has been coming up with all kinds of interesting promos, especially for the SMB systems. That makes it very competitive price-wise and in terms of performance...IBM V7000 has a new license and price structure which provides intuitive licensing based on the functions customers wish to enable and use the most.Regarding licensing make sure you add at least three years software maintenance from IBM at the beginning, because you will not be able to download firmware updates or any fixes/patches without this.
