We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"This solution enables us to make better cost-effective use of our existing hardware and leverage the current infrastructure at a higher level than we could before.""It is extremely stable.""Using our own choice of HW allowed us to price our service to answer our customers' needs.""In the three years that we have been using StarWind, the product has yet to cause us any problems.""High Availability is the best feature of product.""StarWind vSAN is a great solution to create a redundant two-node-only Hyper-V cluster, both for domain or workgroup scenarios.""StarWind vSAN has allowed us to leverage our server infrastructure more completely without the need to add more hardware.""The most valuable features are high availability and real-time replication between two servers."

"Dell EMC VxFlex Ready Nodes can support what we call a heterogeneous environment. So you can have VMware workloads, Hyper-V workloads, bare metal Red Hat workloads, Kubernetes workloads all on the same cluster. You're not pigeonholed into either all bare metal or all virtualized. So it supports basically any platform."

"The solution is useful for taking storage snapshots, has high performance, and the CASL architecture is good for optimizing workloads.""Nimble DHCI is really user friendly and not complex""Very good in-line compression.""It is easier to manage compared to the other vendors.""I love InfoSite. That gets you a lot of good detailed information.""HPE's InfoSight software, which does the comparative analysis and artificial intelligence built-in in the box, and with Nimble they do well against the competition. Additionally, the dashboards are good.""The nice thing about it is that it truly integrates with the cloud, so I can move my volumes bi-directionally in and out of the cloud."

Cons
"This solution should be more self-sufficient, running without creating domains or failover clusters.""A mobile app to sync up for overview and status would really be helpful.""For the StarWind VSA vSphere solution, I would like to see a simpler and automated virtual machine installation process in terms of network settings.""It would help if the manufacturer provided clearer and more detailed documentation, with explanations of how the application can be installed in various HA configurations.""StarWind relies on the underlying OS to manage the "SAN files" whether that would be a RAID volume, software RAID (such as LVM), etc. It would be useful if StarWind could incorporate the actual physical drive management inside of the solution, similar to Storage Spaces Direct.""I found that certain browsers are not fully compatible with the administration web access portal.""When StarWind Virtual SAN for vSphere nodes go offline unexpectedly, the nodes have to re-sync disks fully which takes a long time. We had a power failure and when both nodes came online, VMware vSphere didn't see StarWind disks before I manually re-scanned them form ESXi administration console even though it should happen automatically""I would like to see different levels of support offered."

"From a technical perspective, it's a pretty rock solid solution. I would say the only area for improvement is around its price."

"Their documentation needs to be simpler to read yet more detailed so it's easy to compare models and easier for clients to pick.""The only issue I'm really running into is we have a SQL server that we're having a lot of high IO latency on one of my drives and it's my data drive from my SQL server. It's not really giving me any good information as to where that latency is coming from, so that's what I'm trying to track down and troubleshoot.""The solution could improve by providing better file-level restoration and DVX system options.""Sometimes the technical support would get back to us in two hours, but other times it would take them two or even three days to respond.""Lacking integration to the cloud.""HPE Nimble Storage dHCI currently is promoting only VMware as a hypervisor, whereas if they can look into other OSs, such as KVM or Red Hat, it would be an improvement.""The initial setup is a little bit complicated."

Overview

For SMB, ROBO, Cloud and Hosting providers, who look to cut down virtualization expenses, our solution is StarWind VSAN. It is software that eliminates any need in physical shared storage by basically “mirroring” internal hard disks and flash between hypervisor servers. There is less hardware to buy in general, consequently less money is spent on purchase and maintenance. The existing hardware is used with maximum efficiency, so there is no money wasted at all.

StarWind Virtual SAN targets those who already have servers, or are bound to a particular vendor list to buy from. In case there is a new virtualization infrastructure to be built from scratch, StarWind offers a much better way – StarWind HyperConverged Appliance. It is a turnkey solution complete with hardware and software, powered by StarWind Virtual SAN. Those who need to build and maintain virtualization infrastructure at little to no expense, may be interested in StarWind Virtual SAN Free.

VxRack FLEX and VxFlex Ready Nodes, also known as the Flex family, create a server-based SAN by combining virtualization software, known as VxFlex OS, with Dell EMC PowerEdge servers to deliver flexibility, scalability, and capacity on demand. Local storage resources are combined to create a virtual pool of block storage with varying performance tiers. The platform enables you to start small (with as little as four nodes) and scale incrementally. The Flex family provides enterprise-grade data protection, multi-tenant capabilities, and add-on enterprise features such as QoS, thin provisioning, and snapshots. VxFlex OS is the key enabler and provides an unmatched combination of performance, resiliency and flexibility to address enterprise data center needs. The unique features of VxFlex OS make it an excellent complement to Kubernetes for stateful applications, such as databases, continuous integration, logging and monitoring platforms.

HPE Nimble Storage dHCI an intelligent platform with the flexibility of converged and the simplicity of HCI. It disaggregates compute and storage and integrates hyperconverged control to give enterprises simple infrastructure management on a flexible architecture.
