We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The ease of reaching the support team and their promptness for support is great.""The control panel is nice. It gives you a lot of good feedback as to the status and health of the VSAN.""I like the asynchronous replication and failover features. They are what I'm primarily using it for. The asynchronous replication is helpful because our servers are backed up continuously throughout the day. If anything goes wrong we just fail over immediately. That is a very nice feature to have.""The most valuable features are high availability and real-time replication between two servers.""The management interface on the software is very simple. It is insanely simple compared to most SANs. The interface is also powerful when used to complete tasks that an IT administrator needs to complete.""The ability to keep data accessible even in the event of hardware failures is highly valued, as it ensures business continuity.""Being hardware agnostic is a must and definitely scored points for us.""The user interface for this application is amazing."

"The solution's hardware is great.""The most valuable features are the deduplication and the compression features.""The most valuable feature is that you can assign a volume to an off-shore workload on the fly.""What I like the most is that it is easy to implement, easy deployment and that it's easy to manage.""The solution's best feature is its simplicity. It's so simple to deploy it. You've got the VMware, and it's own appliance. It is really helpful. The system is online within half a day and saves so much time.""The most valuable feature is the low management overhead, and the lower skill set required to manage it.""When we compare it to normal hardware servers, I'd say it is quite easy to configure and deploy."

"It is an easy, straightforward system to set up and maintain.""FlexPod's native integration with hyperscalers is one of the reasons we chose to look at it and NetApp. That is one of the key components of our infrastructure. That native integration is very important.""The validated design is really important for us because it gives us a model on which to base our architecture and continued support for all firmware upgrades. It also provides consistency throughout the environment.""We initially started out with siloed clusters and now we've been able to cluster everything together so that we have multiple nodes in our clusters. We have multiples on different data in different data centers. We've able to do replication between data centers. That's been very beneficial for us as we look to derive a mature DR model.""It's all converged into one consolidated platform, which works well together.""FlexPod has affected the workload of our network admin team awesomely. We have fewer employees. It's good.""It's a new architecture, really scalable and programmable. When you look at SDN propositions it fits very well in a next-gen data center.""The solution can be innovative when it comes to compute storage and networking. FlexPod is very flexible and innovative. We can design it as we like."

Cons
"I would definitely like to see quite a bit more on the monitoring side of things.""Besides not being able to use any filesystem, I do not have any additional cons.""We have, in rare cases, received conflicting guidance between different support folks within StarWind.""Initially, when we first started, the sync was horrible.""I wish they would improve the documentation for the beginner level as it's not very clear on the web page.""Updates seem to be non-existent.""I would like to see improvements in the documentation area.""I struggled when bit figuring out how to go about doing the evaluation."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"There should be more provisioning capabilities within the solution.""Currently, there is no support for the servers that are not in the cluster.""The cost of using the public cloud deployment is astronomical.""The solution's storage size could be improved.""Dell needs to do a lot of work to simplify the maintenance and life-cycle upgrades for the product.""We are not always advised of new features or updates, so we must research to stay up to date.""In the next release, I would like to see support for Docker and containers."

More Dell XC Appliance [EOL] Cons →

"I would like to see them reduce the complexity, that would be my number one request because. Right now, doing simple things is pretty complex. You have so many options. It might be better if it were more wizard-driven, as opposed to going through five hundred dials. It's not very easy or intuitive.""Upgrades are always scary because you just don't know. Nobody has six or seven different systems sitting around that you can test on before you go into production data.""There have been issues upgrading the firmware.""I would like to see a more centralized support model.""We want always more speed, capacity, fluidity, and growth that we can easily integrate.""The tool is obsolete and we are migrating to HPE. It should improve the pricing.""The initial learning curve is pretty steep.""We have had a bit of struggle on the support side. From a customer perspective, it has been up to us to make sure that we get both NetApp and Cisco involved when we have had an issue."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

  • "The price point is very fair for a product in this category but can vary depending on the components selected within the family of products."
  • "We received a good price from Dell."
  • "The pricing is dependent on the technology and is in direct relation to the manufacturer and the components."
  • "The pricing is good."
  • "The pricing for Dell EMC solutions is quite expensive and not really made for small or medium-sized businesses."
  • More Dell XC Appliance [EOL] Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Pricing and licensing is very affordable from a FlexPod perspective."
  • "It seems very cost effective once it's in place, and it's easy to expand and easy to add capacity without a lot of extra money."
  • "If your company really needs to be up 100% of the time, and you need to do a private data center, I don't know if I could realistically actually recommend another blueprint."
  • "Anytime that you are buying any storage make sure you understand storage. Do not just buy storage based on what somebody sells you in terms of IO or throughput."
  • "Buy storage based on the solutions you need, the technologies you need, and what will make your life a lot easier down the road."
  • "As a whole, it is inexpensive, and it uses the least amount of parts."
  • "Storage is very expensive. To buy MIC cards and additional storage either on-prem or in the cloud, the IT department does not have money for it, so you need a more niche product or a more flexible way to store your data. That is the benefit that you get from this product."
  • "We purchased the solution through CDW. They are a partner and knowledgeable."

I urge all to look past the hot air and hype frenzy that are going on, because in the end, the HC platforms have to be aligned and congruent to the organization’s data architecture and business plans. The announcement of Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant on Integrated Systems (read hyper convergence) has put Nutanix as the leader of the pack as of August 2015. Clearly, many of us get caught up because it is the “greatest feeling in the world”. However, this faux feeling is not reality because there are many factors that made the pack leaders in the Magic Quadrant (MQ). First of all, the MQ is about market perception. There is no doubt that the pack leaders in the Leaders Quadrant have earned their right to be there. Each company’s revenue, market share, gross margin, company’s profitability have helped put each as leaders in the pack. However, it is also measured by branding, marketing, market perception and acceptance and other intangible factors. Secondly, VMware EVO: Rail has split the market when EMC has 3 HC solutions in VCE, ScaleIO and EVO: Rail. Cisco wanted to do their own HC piece in Whiptail (between the 2014 MQ and 2015 MQ reports), and closed down Whiptail when their new CEO came on board. NetApp chose EVO: Rail and also has the ever popular FlexPod. That is why you see that in… Read more →
