We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The ProActive support gives me peace of mind because I am a one man shop, but with the technical support behind me, I feel like more than just one person. We spent two to three hours, depending on what we have to do, always on the phone, and they do not push to end the call.""The product creates opportunities with hybrid on-premise solutions.""The most useful aspect is the hyper-converged SD SAN and the ease to expand it by just adding cheap SSD or NVME disks.""The instant failover, with vSAN copying data to the second node, allowed for the continuous availability of our applications.""StarWind saved us about 80% of our storage costs over our old solution.""Active-active HA provides top performance and redundancy.""The best part is the easy way it operates with a very clear GUI without any unnecessary items.""We are able to execute maintenance on one server while the other is still running."

"The most valuable features are the deduplication and the compression features.""What I like the most is that it is easy to implement, easy deployment and that it's easy to manage.""The solution's best feature is its simplicity. It's so simple to deploy it. You've got the VMware, and it's own appliance. It is really helpful. The system is online within half a day and saves so much time.""The most valuable feature is the low management overhead, and the lower skill set required to manage it.""When we compare it to normal hardware servers, I'd say it is quite easy to configure and deploy.""The most valuable feature is that you can assign a volume to an off-shore workload on the fly.""The solution's hardware is great."

"This solution allowed us to move from using standalone systems to having all our data center management in one place.""The replication technology can move data faster than EMC MirrorView and requires less bandwidth. The Storage Virtualization technology is the most mature in the market, outside of IBM’s Storwize (which has a lot of compatibility issues, and EMC’s very expensive VPLEX solution); and it works.""In our implementations, HDS Storage Virtualization has helped in migrating data with the least amount of downtime, compared to other storage technologies."

Cons
"If there are domain controllers inside the cluster, there needs to be some sort of logic allowing them to boot independently so all the rest of the domain clients can gain the authority they need to come online.""For the StarWind VSA vSphere solution, I would like to see a simpler and automated virtual machine installation process in terms of network settings.""The software monitoring should be web-based to be reachable from any VLAN workstation.""We ran into an issue with alerts.""StarWind offers the Enterprise-level high availability (HA), deployed and easily configured .maintain and update and with little to no fuss, even the free version is incredibly capable whilst it brings a the cost of a Highly Available HCI solution down to a very cost effective point" Having used Starwind Virtual SAN for many years both for clients and for internal systems it has always done exactly what it set out to do, provide a cost effect way to run a HCI storage platform for almost any hypervisor, but it is most effective with Hyper-V, simple, easy to use, -.software monitoring should be web based to be reachable from any workstation in VLAN.""A web management interface would be good, especially for those coming from other solutions that have one.""I did not see any indication that StarWinds vSAN is a usable solution with non-GUI instances of Hyper-V.""We would like the documentation to be more complete. Most items are covered, but if you don't know something, you may need to contact their support."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"There should be more provisioning capabilities within the solution.""The solution's storage size could be improved.""The cost of using the public cloud deployment is astronomical.""In the next release, I would like to see support for Docker and containers.""We are not always advised of new features or updates, so we must research to stay up to date.""Dell needs to do a lot of work to simplify the maintenance and life-cycle upgrades for the product.""Currently, there is no support for the servers that are not in the cluster."

More Dell XC Appliance [EOL] Cons →

"An update to its technology would be good. The G Series has been around for more than five years and HDS seriously needs to ramp up, since the competition has better performance at a lower cost with better features and functionalities. For example, it needs redirect on write Snapshot, preconfigured storage tiering with better IOPS, built-in deduplication technology on hybrid disk, etc.""HDS reaches a ceiling depending on model. The G200 cannot transition to G400, the G400 can transition to G600 but cannot transition to G800, which is the top-end model.""An area for improvement would be technical support. In the next release, I would like to see more features added to make this a more complete solution."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

  • "The price point is very fair for a product in this category but can vary depending on the components selected within the family of products."
  • "We received a good price from Dell."
  • "The pricing is dependent on the technology and is in direct relation to the manufacturer and the components."
  • "The pricing is good."
  • "The pricing for Dell EMC solutions is quite expensive and not really made for small or medium-sized businesses."
