We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The fact that the solution is vendor-agnostic allows it to be used with any virtualization vendor while remaining a powerful abstraction over storage.""This solution made it possible to deploy a new infrastructure in the shortest amount of time, at a low cost without purchasing expensive hardware storage, and use unused servers.""Immediately we noticed huge performance gains, even on older hardware and once we implemented a 10GB link between both servers, the sync was near-instant after the initial sync was complete.""I like StarWind's high availability. The failover is almost immediate, so the end users have no idea the guest VM moved at all. We can failover all guest VMs onto a single hypervisor, place it into maintenance mode, install updates, and reboot a hypervisor all during the daytime and remotely, with confidence the process will be successful.""The instant failover, with vSAN copying data to the second node, allowed for the continuous availability of our applications.""StarWind is very easy to use, even if you have had no experience using a SAN before.""The control panel is nice. It gives you a lot of good feedback as to the status and health of the VSAN.""One of the standout features of StarWind.com is its remarkable ability to seamlessly integrate with Dell systems. This integration provides users with an unmatched level of convenience and compatibility, allowing for streamlined operations within a Dell environment. This compatibility factor alone can save significant time and effort for IT professionals, ensuring a smooth integration process and optimized performance."

"The most valuable feature is the low management overhead, and the lower skill set required to manage it.""When we compare it to normal hardware servers, I'd say it is quite easy to configure and deploy.""The solution's hardware is great.""What I like the most is that it is easy to implement, easy deployment and that it's easy to manage.""The most valuable feature is that you can assign a volume to an off-shore workload on the fly.""The solution's best feature is its simplicity. It's so simple to deploy it. You've got the VMware, and it's own appliance. It is really helpful. The system is online within half a day and saves so much time.""The most valuable features are the deduplication and the compression features."

More Dell XC Appliance [EOL] Pros →

"Nutanix Acropolis AOS is easy to use, it is a great platform.""The stability is good. This is the number-one product in that regard.""Hyperconverged Infrastructure is the most valuable feature of Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure.""One of the most valuable features is how well this solution performs. It's stable, aside from some patch issues, but it's great from a virtualization and scalability perspective.""We really love the Lifecycle manager and one-click upgrades.""It's much easier and faster even when you want to create a server from a template or clone.""One of the most valuable features is that it can be applied at any scale.""The solution is easy to use and the pricing is affordable."

More Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Pros →

Cons
"vSAN's free version does not have a graphical user interface.""You have to do a "full" sync on write-back cache disks instead of a quick sync if there is an issue.""I would like to see options for automated notifications of any changes, including, for example, synchronization issues.""I would like to see improvements in the documentation area.""A mobile app to sync up for overview and status would really be helpful.""Scaling the product is fairly easy except for the computing aspect. It would entail another appliance. While not a show stopper, it isn't as easy as dropping in a few extra SSDs.""They need to invest more in the support documents for real issues happening when integrating the solution with the hypervisor.""The software could benefit from more tooling to help with initial deployment."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"Dell needs to do a lot of work to simplify the maintenance and life-cycle upgrades for the product.""There should be more provisioning capabilities within the solution.""Currently, there is no support for the servers that are not in the cluster.""The solution's storage size could be improved.""In the next release, I would like to see support for Docker and containers.""We are not always advised of new features or updates, so we must research to stay up to date.""The cost of using the public cloud deployment is astronomical."

More Dell XC Appliance [EOL] Cons →

"This solution would be improved with built-in integration with Rubrik.""I would like to see a fuller integration with the public cloud. It would help the user enter the hybrid cloud infrastructure.""It's lacking in some features but overcompensating in others.""Benchmark testing indicated that workloads did slightly better on our Vblock by a few percentage""As far as what could be improved, they have some built-in backup functions already, but any built-in isolation features like vision security features and free LAN features become a security concern.""It would be fantastic if there was a built-in layer, in Nutanix, that acted like a cloud interface. So far, we need to integrate a cloud interface on top of Nutanix for billing the usage for specific customers' domains. It would be great if a cloud gateway was built-in, inside Nutanix.""An area for improvement would be the cyber security features.""Some clients find the solution's cost to be too high."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."
  • More StarWind Virtual SAN Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "The price point is very fair for a product in this category but can vary depending on the components selected within the family of products."
  • "We received a good price from Dell."
  • "The pricing is dependent on the technology and is in direct relation to the manufacturer and the components."
  • "The pricing is good."
  • "The pricing for Dell EMC solutions is quite expensive and not really made for small or medium-sized businesses."
  • More Dell XC Appliance [EOL] Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Able to grow with smaller, more linear increments of investment"
  • "The basic license that comes with the box allows basic virtualization features but advanced automation features would require an upgrade of licenses."
  • "I know Nutanix and VxRail have similar prices and licenses. Nutanix is a go-ahead if AHV is used as hypervisor because it is already embedded in the price."
  • "While cost may seem higher than your traditional 3-tier architecture, you need to look at the bigger picture. You're not just buying hardware here. You're buying a complete environment."
  • "Setup cost is minor, pricing is quite a bit (we have a 7-node-cluster for about 450K EUR with 2 vGPU-nodes for Citrix) but that includes hardware, software, and support."
  • "The price is good but I think there is still room for improvement on the price."
  • "Extra features should not be so expensive. We would love to be able to use or even just try some of the extra features without having to buy them. Buying those features is just as expensive as buying vSphere licenses, so the cost savings is nullified."
  • "Work close with your InfraTeam and discuss with Nutanix the best way to achieve sizing and price that are right for you."

I urge all to look past the hot air and hype frenzy that are going on, because in the end, the HC platforms have to be aligned and congruent to the organization’s data architecture and business plans. The announcement of Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant on Integrated Systems (read hyper convergence) has put Nutanix as the leader of the pack as of August 2015. Clearly, many of us get caught up because it is the “greatest feeling in the world”. However, this faux feeling is not reality because there are many factors that made the pack leaders in the Magic Quadrant (MQ). First of all, the MQ is about market perception. There is no doubt that the pack leaders in the Leaders Quadrant have earned their right to be there. Each company’s revenue, market share, gross margin, company’s profitability have helped put each as leaders in the pack. However, it is also measured by branding, marketing, market perception and acceptance and other intangible factors. Secondly, VMware EVO: Rail has split the market when EMC has 3 HC solutions in VCE, ScaleIO and EVO: Rail. Cisco wanted to do their own HC piece in Whiptail (between the 2014 MQ and 2015 MQ reports), and closed down Whiptail when their new CEO came on board. NetApp chose EVO: Rail and also has the ever popular FlexPod. That is why you see that in… Read more →
