We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"To generate these same tabular formatted reports with a code-only solution would have taken a lot longer to implement than the Docmosis template-based approach. Docmosis templates were easier to design as we were able to use Microsoft Word to create them. The templates made it easy to make any changes to reports and provided flexibility in our design approach.""There is flexibility in laying out tables that is akin to UI front-end design.""The ability to embed, and dynamically repeat, templates within each other is a very simple yet extremely powerful tool.""A new report’s template creation is very often manipulation of a user’s layout of a report. A report can be ready in a day or less, once stored procedures are created as per sections in the report.""Since our initial development, this feature has required very little maintenance. And when changes are requested, it is rather easy to change a Word document template and new staff can be quickly trained to modify a report.""Globally, the ability to create document templates in several formats by using a rich syntax is simple and clear to understand."

"The best feature of Domo is that it's completely on the cloud. I also like that you can handle data end-to-end without having to depend on multiple tools. Another specific feature I like the most about Domo is Magic ETL because, through it, you can do all your expression, transformation, and loading activities very smoothly. The tool also follows the lineage concept, so you can understand what kind of transformations took place on a particular data set. You can find end-to-end data from the source until it has become the final output or the final data set. Whatever happened to a particular data set, you can understand it through the Domo lineage, and that isn't possible in most of the tools available in the market, but in Domo, that's available. The tool is also solid and because it's on the cloud, it uses multiple data engineering in the backend and multiple algorithms in the back, behind the scenes, resulting in a great performance. For example, if an end user such as the CEO or COO opens a report or the dashboard and it takes more than ten seconds, the end user won't be interested in looking at that report or dashboard, but Domo enables better performance and there's usually no performance issues from that tool.""The dashboarding itself was pretty easy. So both the front and the back end were positive in this case.""We find the ease of using the solution valuable.""The user interface is quite good.""Using the "cards" which function as preconfigured reports or views. I use many of them simultaneously on an organized page, with filters that allow me to see high-level information as well as subsets across the dataset, in a few clicks. Many Excel-challenged users love to use this product for its simplicity.""The fact that you can add any data source is valuable. The entire data handling suite they have, all the apps, etc., is pretty amazing. One of the key things, not being a techie or a data-warehouse guy, is that you can connect data sources, and do all kinds of pretty amazing things.""We've worked with all the features of Domo. Among the most important are Pivot and Sumo Cards. We can use drill-down from the top-most level with a click, generating charts.""I mostly see it as an ETL which has many system connectors. It does a good job of ETL."

Cons
"We are facing new challenges such as internationalization. The next big challenge will be to offer even more date formats and numbers that cover the majority of countries. It will be to also think about features, such as number to text conversion, or the reverse which is currently only available in English but is in great demand by our international customers.""It would be great to have improved diagnostic and debugging tools. When report templates are complex, sometimes any minor modification needs to be thoroughly tested to ensure that it does not disrupt a previously designed template.""The challenge in usage when we developed the reports four years ago was the limited logic that can be applied to manipulate and display data. That functionality was largely transferred over to the database layer in creating the data output that was to be displayed.""Version control and restricted access to some users for template editing could be a useful addition."

"It's quite slow. We are using about 2,000,000 rows of data. Creating certain reports takes almost a couple of minutes, which should not be the case.""The forecasting feature, the regression features, and the Python libraries could all be improved. They're all in beta.""If your ETL runs more than 24 hours, it always fails because we are logging a lot of historical data, and there is a restriction on the amount of data (in rows) that you can run. The technical support has not found a solution for this yet.""There's a learning curve before you can get used to the solution.""I would like to be able to drill down more when there is a particular area where there is a problem. I don't clearly see that in Domo at the moment.""I would also like to see improvements to their drag and drop Magic ETL tool. You can drag and drop your ETL tool, but it doesn't really work for a large amount of data. It struggles with that. In a real-world application, where you're working with 30 million rows or 100 million rows, it takes a bit longer to process the data. If you do it in the Redshift ETL tool, using your own code, it's much faster.""I would like to see more flexibility in their pricing structure. The trend is moving from database pricing to a user-license pricing model. That would be a benefit if they wanted to reevaluate their pricing structure.""It is very difficult too, if we do have specific requests or errors that we can't get figure out - especially when it comes to the development platform, developing custom connectors or doing any kind of API work, custom cards - in that there's a lag in the response time."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Cloud and REST API models keep the setup costs low."
  • "Price bands are based on pages so ensure you have a good understanding of this if documents are of variable length."

  • "I believe that the investment in Domo was worthwhile because it allowed for the organization to jump in quickly, with little training. There are different plans available based on the requirements."
  • "They've built an "app economy." Some of them are really expensive, so they're not for startups and smaller companies. They're more like enterprise tools. We couldn't afford some of them, because they were so crazy expensive. But if I was working for a bank, insurance company, or some bigger corporation then, for sure, you could justify those prices... It was silly expensive back then and it probably still is, or even more expensive."
  • "We are making money from Domo, and all our clients are happy with the information that they receive from it."
  • "It is on the pricier end."
  • "Domo is slightly costly but it's much cheaper than some."
  • "I'm not sure about pricing, but I believe Domo is quite costly. Prior to joining this organization, I had a Domo license with my former employer and I think that license was around $500 to $600 annually. That was for a single license. I think it varies, depending on the organization that is acquiring Domo."
  • "For about 100 users our cost is $95,800."
  • "Because it's software as a service, it's more expensive on the face of it. But there are a lot of variables. I don't have to pay for servers or for infrastructure. I don't have to pay labor for my IT organization to set up or maintain the environment. I don't have to pay for them to upgrade the software, and test it, etc., because when it rolls out, it is transparent and seamless for us. But, because of that, it costs more, I imagine, than Sisense, or Yellowfin, or Power BI. A lot of those make it sound like they're inexpensive, but when you add in all the hidden costs and all of the overhead, it's probably comparable."
