Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It was quite easy to use. The UI was basically drag-and-drop based. So, even if you were a beginner at coding software or something else, it would be easy to catch up on Dundas BI.""With Dundas BI, you have a lot of visualization choices, and you can also do customizations by using HTML coding and JavaScript. The ease of development was one of the main factors for going for Dundas BI. The client had different reporting tools, but they wanted something that could accommodate all requirements.""The Layers feature organizes my work and makes it easier, instead of having to use scripting to show and hide when drilling down.""The solution has a good drag-and-drop feature for creating dashboards.""We use Dundas to report on machine sensor data and create dashboards.""We have now the ability to create interactive and complex reports without the need for software developers and code."

"The most valuable feature of IBM Cognos is security. The solution has updated features that other competitors' solutions come out with long after IBM Cognos has had them.""The initial setup is quite straightforward.""The product is a very good reporting tool and is very flexible. It allows for the users to get a scheduled report.""The basic platform comes with several meta-modelling tools.""The most valuable features of IBM Cognos are governance and enterprise reporting.""Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten.""Comparing IBM Cognos to other applications, once a person is trained on it or they have developed a skill set to operate the application, it is best in its category.""Report Studio: This is the most powerful and sophisticated tool for professional reporting."

Cons
"Working with the color palette is difficult in Dundas BI. They can work on different color palettes and make them organized and user-friendly. It would help a long way. Most of the time, the users face challenges in assigning colors to the fields that they have created or to the dimensions and measures in a chart.""I cannot select a visualization and see what filters are connected to it.""I would love to see more functions built in inside the application, instead of being scripted. They already did some of that in the new release, version 5, like forecasting, trend lines, etc., and I would love to see more of these kinds of calculations, which we used to do it by scripts before.""Lacks sufficient online support.""For every object, references are generated, but sometimes, there was a problem with the references overlapping each other. Everything would go off. It would stop working, and then from the admin side, people had to do something to bring it up again.""It would be helpful if Dundas made the UI more user-friendly like the leading tools and decreased the learning curve. It should be simpler for a beginner to build dashboards."

More Dundas BI Cons →

"The tool needs to improve the connectivity since I see that, at times, there is a need to increase the memory in the database.""The solution seems to slow down the servers.""It would be nice to offer free online training on the tool for end-users.""Extending features on dashboards so it becomes a real dashboard building application, not only a data exploration tool.""Most of our company's customers want to be able to deploy IBM Cognos on a web application and use it as a desktop application, which is not possible currently.""I would like them to reinclude PowerPlay. One thing that I am missing in the current Cognos is what was formally named PowerPlay. They have basically removed PowerPlay from it, which is something that I fail to understand because it was the most wonderful tool for business intelligence that I've ever used. As far as I know, they don't provide this functionality anymore, so this is one thing that I dislike about Cognos.""They should provide improved visual reporting.""There are some small features that are missing. It would be nice if the graphics were better. You can use external sources for charts, but it's quite complex to use and not easy to implement. If you want a new chart, you can download it from multiple tools and implement it into IBM Cognos."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "I'm not aware of its cost. Its licensing was probably role-wise. Most of us had reader access, editor access, or developer access. For admin, there were certain restrictions. So, I'm assuming it had role-wise licensing."
  • "I am not majorly involved in its licensing. We are not the end license purchaser of the Dundas BI. It costs somewhere around $4,000 a year for the enterprise solution, but I am not sure."
  • More Dundas BI Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "There is need to assess the purchase license accordingly so as to avoid audit penalties."
  • "The pricing and licensing policies are comparatively cheaper than other products in the market ."
  • "IBM Cognos offers competitive pricing similar to other BI vendors in the market."
  • "Pricing should be improved."
  • "The pricing of this product is meant for medium to large-scale enterprises."
  • "It is my understanding that the cost is very low. It's not very expensive."
  • "Cognos is super expensive compared to Tableau ($70/month) and Power BI ($20/month) — I think Cognos is roughly $200 a month."
  • "It is quite pricy. I think Microsoft BI is cheaper. Tableau might also be cheaper, but it also depends on the usage. If you have very many users, Cognos can be a problem. It could be cheaper than Tableau but not for so many users. If you have a few thousand users, Tableau, which is generally quite expensive, can be cheaper than Cognos."

    Reviews from Real Users

Below are some reviews and helpful feedback written by PeerSpot users currently using the Dundas BI solution.

A Business Intelligence Consultant at Siemens Industry says, “The flexibility of the dashboard designer is great. You can control every single pixel and no matter what the user asks for we can deliver. It has a lot of out-of-the-box options that you can use to customize your dashboard. There is also the option to use their JavaScript API, however, in 99% of the cases, the built-in options are more than enough. I also love the control you have on what queries Dundas BI is generating against our databases. This allows us to create really fast dashboards even when running against millions of records.”

James D., System Architect at Yulista, LLC mentions that the most valuable aspect of the solution is its “ability to warehouse query results. This is good because you do not have to have a data warehouse, you let Dundas warehouse the results of a query that runs long during off hours.”

Another reviewer shares, “The built-in ETL functionality has allowed us to combine data sources without the need for a full SSIS package. This saves time and allows for a quicker time to market.”

IBM Cognos Business Intelligence provides a wide range of tools to help you analyze your organization's data. IBM Cognos BI allows businesses to monitor events and metrics, create and view business reports, and analyze data to help them make effective business decisions.

IBM Cognos applies techniques to describe, summarize, and compare data, and draw conclusions. This allows users to see trends and discover anomalies or variances that may not be evident by simply reading data. Data sources that contain information from different areas of a business can be stored in separate packages. Users can see only information that they have been granted access to, based on their group or role.

IBM Cognos BI consolidates the following business intelligence functions into a single web-based solution:

    • IBM Cognos Insight: Create personal and managed workspaces for data analysis. Using these interactive workspaces, you can share insight results with managers. Cognos Insight supports write-back, and you can also use these workspaces to capture and integrate management goals, commitments, and forecasts.

    • IBM Cognos Workspace: With IBM Cognos Workspace, you can create rich, interactive workspaces using IBM Cognos content as well as data from external sources. You can view and open your favorite workspaces and reports, edit content in your workspaces, and share your workspaces via email.

    • IBM Cognos Analytics: IBM Cognos Analytics utilizes built-in AI and intuitive searches which helps users to quickly create the visualizations and a wide range of reports. Cognos Analytics provides cognitive and managed self-service, enabling you to gain insights from controlled and trusted data.

    • IBM Cognos Report Studio and IBM Cognos Query Studio: Easily create structured and query reports. IBM Cognos allows users to create application and report templates. In addition, report authors can reuse report objects to apply filters, fields, and styles to reports. Users can set the language of the user interface and report content according to the user's native language.

    • IBM Cognos Event Studio: Receive notifications of events that occur within your organization in real time. Event Studio enables the creation of agents that detect the occurrence of business events, failures, or anomalies, based on the change of specific events or data conditions. Notification can be sent via email, publication in the portal, or by triggering reports.

    • IBM Cognos Connection: This is the Web portal for IBM Cognos BI and is the central area for accessing all the IBM Cognos functions. In the web portal, users can schedule and distribute reports, create tasks, administer the server and the access permissions, and more.
