  • Ease of Deployment: Dynatrace and VMware Tanzu Observability by Wavefront have different levels of difficulty in their initial setup. Dynatrace is generally easy to set up, while Wavefront's setup can vary in complexity and may require technical, network, and security teams. Dynatrace can be implemented quickly, while Wavefront may take longer to set up.
  • Features: Dynatrace stands out for its real user tracking, AI automation for incident alerts, and Kubernetes topology visualization. On the other hand, VMware Tanzu Observability by Wavefront is lauded for its ease of deployment and integration, support for container platforms, and speed.
  • Pricing: Dynatrace's pricing can be confusing and may require additional purchases for premium support. On the other hand, VMware Tanzu Observability by Wavefront can be expensive due to licensing costs and additional fees for integrations and add-ons. Despite the potential costs, the investment in VMware Tanzu Observability by Wavefront may be worth it for those who prefer a pre-built solution rather than building their own using open source tools.
  • Service and Support: Dynatrace has received both positive feedback for its responsiveness and negative feedback for longer wait times and inadequate documentation. Similarly, opinions on VMware Tanzu Observability by Wavefront's support are varied, with some users not needing support and others finding it satisfactory.

Comparison Results: Dynatrace has more features, a user-friendly interface, and better integration with other tools. Its pricing and licensing are also more competitive, and it has provided significant cost savings through automation and decreased mean time to identification and repair. While VMware Tanzu Observability by Wavefront is praised for its ease of deployment and integration with multiple solutions, its consumption-based billing model and high license cost are major issues for users.

Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It is a platform that is very well-suited for marketers, but also for technology people. That is the key: the dashboard.""Its monitoring and key purpose capabilities are the most valuable. It provides the root cause of problems and helps peers join the war room.""Its ability to correlate a large source of information to pinpoint a root cause. This speeds up issue resolution and allow us to better reach our objectives.""We also use it in our performance testing. We found an issue that way, and we would have put that change live without Dynatrace. Finding that problem in "live", that would have been three or four days of investigation, whereas we found the issue, fixed the issue, reran the tests, all same day.""Helps us to shorten down the time for triaging an issue.""This tool helps us gather information from all hosts and services, then cross reference the information.""Scalability is outstanding. It won't tax our environment at all as it will scale sideways.""It helps DevOps find all its problems easily and analyzes performance problems."

More Dynatrace Pros →

"The most valuable aspects of the solution are its ease of use and its ease of implementation.""For us, the ease of deployment in combination with TMZ was the most important part because we don't have to manually deploy a complex monitoring solution. We can more or less do that with the click of a button, and we are not dependent on the developers to provide us with all the necessary features and functions to make that work. We can just deploy it on a workload cluster and monitor at least a good part of the workload. If we want to go into detail, we clearly need to make changes, but for a good part of application monitoring, it gives us good insights.""The features I find most valuable is the querying and alerting capabilities.""VMware comes with a support team, and if you have trouble, you can easily create a ticket, and VMware will help you. Therefore, the best aspect is the support.""This solution allows me to have true visibility for any metrics when it comes to my cloud, and private.""People are very pleased with the implementation.""Tanzu itself, integrated with multiple solutions, bestows support and security upon a container platform, especially when it comes to managing open-source container platforms such as Kubernetes.""The solution is great for virtualization and preparing the infrastructure in Tanzu to test products. It's very fast and has good visibility."

Cons
"Mainly navigation needs improvement. It is easier to follow a flow. Following the flow of the admin now is not easy.""One of the new features is "impacted users." I would like to see a rate of impacted users. For example, how long has the problem been going on: 100 users in five minutes. Does that mean that in 3 hours if we don't get this solved, we're impacting x number of people? Understanding the rate at which the problem is impacting people would be a cool feature.""I would say it's not scalable, because we've had to move large applications that were in a shared environment to their own separate Dynatrace server instance.""It's not really user friendly. You need to go through a certain type of training.""I was hands on in the setup of the solution. Initially, it seemed a little daunting.""Setting up the thresholds and alerting, it is complicated to understand their use cases.""For an easy view of global and entity-specific configurations, a separate tile or pane aggregating these configurations should be implemented.""There's no download action for the reports, so if they could add something like that, it would add value for us. We cannot save data for more than seven to 10 days, so it would be better to add a feature for downloading. At least we could store the data and then we could compare for ourselves, where we are starting and where we are and where we are heading. I would have those metrics."

More Dynatrace Cons →

"I would like to see integration with Kubernetes cluster and APIs so that you can manage the entire stack.""The documentation and integration with Kubernetes could be improved.""The initial setup should be easier and more seamless.""It could use a URL document server. Everything in the market is moving towards automation and everybody's looking for the single click operations as well relational data locality.""The implementation is a long process that should be improved.""They could make it more easy to plug-in data so that a nontechnical person will be able to use it, like accountants or finance people. That way they don't have to ask us.""The main problem I have is that the license cost is very high.""Its billing model is consumption-based. I understand the consumption-based model, but it is not necessarily easy to estimate and guess how many points or how much we are going to consume on a specific application up until we get to that point. So, for us, it would be helpful to have more insights or predictability into what we can expect from a cost perspective if we are starting to use specific features. This can potentially also drive our consumption a bit more."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Pricing is based on the number of servers monitored, so for big applications, it is a bit expensive."
  • "Licensing is a bit complicated for Dynatrace, and pricing is dependent on how much your organization invests."
  • "We found an issue within the first week of ownership that has been costing us more than the entire license cost."
  • "Product pricing can seem a little over complex, however this is minor and does not detract from the benefits of the solution."
  • "Getting the first agents installed, getting information, and coverage in a initial set of systems can be done in hours and with a low cost entry point."
  • "Price (of the product) is a major concern for all the clients I work with."
  • "The licensing model is confusing in solutioning clients for the number of hosts needed to deploy."
  • "The product is superior to others, but it comes with a price tag that is often difficult to position back to clients."
  • More Dynatrace Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Different locations require different setups. In your terms, around 300 to around 400K USD."
  • "I don't have the details. In our case, there is a mixture in place. We have production usage, and we are also doing training for VMware. So, we also have a training instance. It is worth the money you would spend on it. That's because if you were to build all of this yourself by using some of the open source tools, then you would need a lot of time."
  • "The licensing costs are very high, particularly when you consider that we have to purchase a level 1 license for every integration, such as the load balancer, HAProxy, and the MSSP. And if you want to use vSAN, that's another license. Then, of course, Tanzu Observability has its own separate license."
  • "I would rate the pricing as three out of five."
