We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable features for us are impact analysis, where I can easily visualize the impact of change.""By placing the data and the metadata into a model, which is what the tool does, you gain the abilities for linkages between different objects in the model, linkages that you cannot get on paper or with Visio or PowerPoint. That is a huge discriminator.""I really liked that it mapped out processes and was able to attach the data model to the appropriate process. You could map out the process, then when you got down to a specific couple of data elements, you could attach the table in the database that supported that process. You could connect it with erwin Data Modeler for that.""The feature that stands out for me is the ease of configuring objects and the screens to show them. It's really easy to add a new type of object in this reference. Creating a new type of object, using it, and evolving it a little bit in terms of what we can document about it are the main features that made us decide to use this provider.""You can use different kinds of diagrams to represent the architecture setting.""We can efficiently deploy business models into the databases and generate SQL scripts.""The ability to share and collaborate on the solution is its most valuable feature.""Support for a broad range of data sources from relational to big data to the Cloud."

"The pricing model is attractive.""Using the Component Diagram, Visual Paradigm helps with design and control, reusing components.""The solution is very user-friendly. It's easy to just open it and start working.""It is a scalable solution since it can be used at an individual level as well as for enterprise-sized businesses.""The initial setup is extremely straightforward.""Visual Paradigm is super user-friendly, especially for new team members. I always have them start with it because the interface is so simple to pick up. They usually spend about six months to a year using only Visual Paradigm before moving on to other tools. We also use the cloud repository for collaborative work, but I've had some trouble with code reviewing and limitations. Sometimes, customers even request the source file or exported XML because it's easier for them to access and review.""The most valuable feature of the Visual Paradigm that I use is process modeling. Additionally, the solution has a complete set of features.""The most valuable feature of Visual Paradigm is the ability to design form flows, add libraries, create organizational charts, and connect them all together."

Cons
"erwin Evolve by Quest could have additional features to manage the architecture of enterprises and businesses.""If it had fewer features to model all kinds of architecture, it would be less complicated.""They have improved the search engine a little bit but it can always be improved more. The more data you put inside it, the more you want to use it.""I would like it to be easier to make changes and then deploy them into production, especially when you have multiple web servers or front-ends. It would be nice to make a change and then have it propagate to the production servers in a more automated fashion.""What they need to do is to consolidate more of their products. For example, I was just looking and I couldn't figure out what erwin DT is. It's on the website but it would help if they could put information together and make it more clear as to what products they have and how they work with other things.""They need to develop Evolve's user experience. For example, MEGA has a useful client view that helps with impact analysis. MEGA provides information about the processes, services, infrastructure, and portfolio of applications in one central view. It lets you see the periphery and relationships among components. This view is impressive, and Evolve doesn't have it.""The solution's integration capabilities with other tools in our system has not been all that well done. We have people who use ARIS, who use System Architect and, of course, Visio. erwin has very limited ways to import and export from those kinds of tools. It's not a very easy thing to do.""It could have had a more streamlined navigation. It seemed that when you went to the explorer panel, there were just so many different ways of doing the work that I could not remember, "How did I do this? How did I get to that point in that model to get back to it?" If I wanted to build a new one, where do I start? It just seemed like there was such a smorgasbord of ways of doing it that it was just overwhelming."

"It's still early for me to comment since I've only been using it for two months, but the responsiveness when diagramming needs to be improved.""Visual Paradigm is heavier and has more complexity than one of its competitors, e.g. Lucidchart. It could have been better if it was more simplified.""Visual Paradigm's initial deployment was difficult since we did it for the first time. It is challenging to learn to use the product.""I was looking to generate code from the diagrams, but it was not totally clear how to do it.""The solution can be heavy on resource usage.""The user interface is not easy to navigate, so it should be made easier.""I would like to see something for visualizing innovation work maps.""Visual Paradigm could improve many aspects. The performance could be better because it can be low. When we have large and complicated models, it has a low speed and many bugs. Sometimes the solution stops and you have to restart Microsoft Windows on your PC. The larger database modeling cannot be done properly, I have to use another solution called SAP PowerDesigner."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Unless you are a one person shop – always go with the Workgroup edition and Concurrent licensing."
  • "On a yearly basis, our licensing costs are 50,000 euro. There are no additional costs because we are on a SaaS model."
  • "The cost is something like $15,000, per license. But I haven't looked at those numbers in three years. It was over $100,000 to initially set everything up and get it all configured."
  • "The licensing enables you to differentiate between people who edit the content and the people who consume it. We are able to keep the licensing costs down by keeping the "contributor" licenses to a minimum, and we then just roll out the content in a read-only version for the rest of our users."
  • "Yearly, our cost is €100,000."
  • "I think erwin is quite expensive. I have difficulty selling the portal, in fact."
  • "I estimate that we pay between $40,000 and $50,000 a year for the solution, not including the upfront costs to buy things the first time."

  • "Over the years I've seen an increase in price, and it makes it difficult for a single person company, like me, to decide whether to extend the license."
  • "You can use Paradigm on a subscription basis and you can choose from different tiers of subscription."
  • "You can move between the tiers from month to month so you are not restricted to one pricing model."
  • "The pricing of Visual Paradigm is very appropriate and affordable. There are no hidden costs involved."
  • "This product is fairly cheap, but if you want more complex features, e.g. integration with other products, it does require an additional cost."
  • "Visual Paradigm has two models available. One of them is the educational edition, and another is the business edition. For my personal usage, I use the educational version mostly. In a project, my customers have to purchase a license."
  • "Visual Paradigm costs $99 per license. I chose the cheapest option from the pricing list."
  • "Pricing for Visual Paradigm is a four out of five for me. I'm happy with its pricing."
