Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The initial setup is not complex. It is user-friendly since it is a single solution with all the components delivered in one package.""The real benefit of this solution is that it is pre-architected with the ability to scale-up and scale-out.""It provides ease of automation.""It has been a great product, primarily because of a lot of its deduplication features, and the out-of-the-box thinking on block level storage from NetApp.""FlexPod has improved our company as far as ease of management, stability, and redundancy.""ONTAP is the core of FlexPod, so its most valuable features are: FlexClone, Snapshot, and SnapCenter.""The most valuable features of this solution are efficiency and simplicity.""It ships in a rack, so it is very easy to deploy."

"The most valuable features are reliability and high availability.""The most valuable feature is that it is centrally managed, as it is quite easy for our customers to manage everything, end-to-end.""UCS Manager worked well for net/blade management and has allowed fairly easy use of dedicated bare-metal blades.""The component integration means I don't have to worry about technology mismatches.""It has improved system performance, batch times for off-hours processing, and reliability with production applications.""VMware NSX: Provides the ability for our organisation to deliver true DR.""The high redundancy of components has minimized frequent service degradation/failure.""The XtremIO All-Flash array delivers performance, reliability, and deduplication."

Cons
"A progress bar would...be pretty cool.""We would like more security features.""It would be great to see some form of interoperability between the FAS units and the E-Series, specifically for replication, even if it is just one more replication from a FAS to an E-Series. That would be amazing.""Both NetApp and Cisco need to do improvements in their day-to-day operations management upgrades.""If there were going to be any improvements, they should probably be UI improvements, overall. It can get a little kludgy sometimes when trying to figure out what to do.""The graphical interface could be made easier to use and more intuitive.""I would like to see programmability into a SaaS-based offering, as I know Cisco's going in a lot of directions with their Intersight application.""They could improve their technical support team. They need to have a specific phone number for you to call in for the FlexPod solution. Some of the partner support knows if it is for FlexPod, they will get you to the right department."

More FlexPod XCS Cons →

"It needs more customer/client involvement in back-end management.""Improve the patching process and timeliness of updates/releases.""While most public clouds are deployed on Linux, there is current no certified Vblock working on KVM hypervisors.""The user control could be more advanced. They should work to improve this in future releases.""OEM services requires too much planning and low availability of certified engineers.""RCM upgrades were not scripted, and you needed to roll on your own. We were led to believe this would be otherwise.""In the next release, I would like to see a smaller footprint in the data center and have improvements to disk performance.""VCE tools, like Vision or AMP were not stand alone, and depended too much on other management consoles."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Pricing and licensing is very affordable from a FlexPod perspective."
  • "It seems very cost effective once it's in place, and it's easy to expand and easy to add capacity without a lot of extra money."
  • "If your company really needs to be up 100% of the time, and you need to do a private data center, I don't know if I could realistically actually recommend another blueprint."
  • "Anytime that you are buying any storage make sure you understand storage. Do not just buy storage based on what somebody sells you in terms of IO or throughput."
  • "Buy storage based on the solutions you need, the technologies you need, and what will make your life a lot easier down the road."
  • "As a whole, it is inexpensive, and it uses the least amount of parts."
  • "Storage is very expensive. To buy MIC cards and additional storage either on-prem or in the cloud, the IT department does not have money for it, so you need a more niche product or a more flexible way to store your data. That is the benefit that you get from this product."
  • "We purchased the solution through CDW. They are a partner and knowledgeable."
  • More FlexPod XCS Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Strive for a consolidated ELA."
  • "Related to tech support: I believe it is too expensive."
  • "I would not say the pricing is not good value. It is still on the expensive side, near the top-end of cost compared to what's available now. Also, the licensing has to be improved. There has to be a clear definition of the licensing from the initial set-up so the customer knows what they are paying for, without being hit later on with extra licensing. The licensing definitions should be clearer and, perhaps, have one set of licenses rather than multiple licenses."
  • "It is not cheap."
  • "Vblock appears from the first while to be very expensive. There are more items you cannot see in the BOQ: customer service, support, delivery short time, and highly experienced VCE engineers."
  • "I think the pricing is on the higher end of the spectrum. There could be some adjustments that could be made there. Regarding licensing, watch compatibility with external products that you run on Vblock. It has got to be properly architected, otherwise, you will run into licensing issues."
  • "The paid support for Vblock is expensive."
  • "Vblock is priced at a premium because people don't want the headache of managing and deploying different products."

The announcement of Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant on Integrated Systems (read hyper convergence) has put Nutanix as the leader of the pack as of August 2015. Clearly, many of us get caught up because it is the “greatest feeling in the world”. However, this faux feeling is not reality because there are many factors that made the pack leaders in the Magic Quadrant (MQ). First of all, the MQ is about market perception. There is no doubt that the pack leaders in the Leaders Quadrant have earned their right to be there. Each company’s revenue, market share, gross margin, company’s profitability have helped put each as leaders in the pack. However, it is also measured by branding, marketing, market perception and acceptance and other intangible factors. Secondly, VMware EVO: Rail has split the market when EMC has 3 HC solutions in VCE, ScaleIO and EVO: Rail. Cisco wanted to do their own HC piece in Whiptail (between the 2014 MQ and 2015 MQ reports), and closed down Whiptail when their new CEO came on board. NetApp chose EVO: Rail and also has the ever popular FlexPod. That is why you see that in… Read more →
