We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"The most valuable feature is stability.""Its Snort 3 IPS has better flexibility as far as being able to write rules. This gives me better granularity.""Firepower NGFW has improved my organization in several ways. Before, we were trying to stamp out security threats and issues, it was a one-off type of way to attack it. I spent a lot of manpower trying to track down the individual issues or flare-ups that we would see. With Cisco's Firepower Management, we're able to have that push up to basically one monitor and one UI and be able to track that and stop threats immediately. It also gives us a little more granularity on what those threats might be.""The most valuable feature is the access control list (ACL).""The dashboard is the most important thing. It provides good visibility and makes management easy. Firepower also provides us with good application visibility and control.""Another benefit has been user integration. We try to integrate our policies so that we can create policies based on active users. We can create policies based on who is accessing a resource instead of just IP addresses and ports.""The most valuable features of this solution are advanced malware protection, IPS, and IDS.""Provides good integrations and reporting."

"There are many useful features, such as web security and advanced threat detection.""The information security features are the most valuable.""It is more robust than SonicWall, particularly on the VPN from site to site.""Has a very simple OS and a good price point.""There are a lot of features that we like within the solution. The resources or performance of the firewall is very good. However, the real selling point is the fact that the solution offers so many features, it gives our clients a lot of extras that they can work with. There's a lot on offer.""Performance-wise, I think FortiOS is much better than its Juniper counterpart. Based on our actual experience and performance metrics, FortiOS-based products are much better than Juniper.""FortiGate as a product is very easy to configure.""Firewall and overall management are valuable features."

"The security of the solution is perfect. It's very good at protecting us from attacks.""DHCP is a basic service, and they've been doing it for years, so it's mature and stable.""Infoblox offers granularity and advanced DNS protection to mitigate DNS attacks. It's a very secure solution."

Cons
"I would like to see improvement when you create policies on Snort 3 IPS on Cisco Firepower. On Snort 2, it was more like a UI page where you had some multiple choices where you could tweak your config. On Snort 3, the idea is more to build some rules on the text file or JSON file, then push it. So, I would like to see a lot of improvements here.""The change-deployment time can always be improved. Even at 50 seconds, it's longer than some of its competitors. I would challenge Cisco to continue to improve in that area.""The price and SD-WAN capabilities are the areas that need improvement.""Its interface is sometimes is a little bit slow, and it can be improved. When you need to put your appliance in failover mode, it is a little difficult to do it remotely because you need to turn off the appliance in Cisco mode. In terms of new features, it would be good to have AnyConnect VPN with Firepower. I am not sure if it is available at the moment.""The initial setup can be a bit complex for those unfamiliar with the solution.""This product is managed using the Firepower Management Center (FMC), but it would be better if it also supported the command-line interface (CLI).""FirePOWER does a good job when it comes to providing us with visibility into threats, but I would like to see a more proactive stance to it.""The configuration in Firepower Management Center is very slow. Deployment takes two to three minutes. You spend a lot of time on modifications. Whereas, in FortiGate, you press a button, and it takes one second."

"FortiOS doesn't work well with all browsers. I think they need to do a better job of making it compatible with the various browsers that are out there.""Lacks flexibility for different scenario configurations.""Fortinet needs to make this solution even more robust. Sometimes when we get a DDoS attack, the cannot withstand it. We can run out of sessions very easily. That said, I suppose if you want more a robust system, then you could purchase higher-end solutions, which are more expensive. Still, I would like to see more protection from even in the low-end version.""It would be great if they can push the Microsoft updates through Fortinet OS and provide a centralized patch management system. They should also include the data loss prevention (DLP) and data leakage prevention features. They could also add network monitoring more effectively.""Right now, it's very trendy to integrate everything into the cloud. This solution would be more effective if they did more integration in that regard.""They're using a lot of application-specific IC, so that may be causing some performance issues. And whenever a Fortinet adds new features, it can affect performance.""Technical support could be better. Some competitors have much more responsive support teams.""The pricing model makes this product far more expensive than similar solutions."

More Fortinet FortiOS Cons »

"There should be better alerts for when attacks are happening.""There needs to be more capabilities in order to configure the console itself instead of the user interface dashboard. Configuring the DNS or DHCP through the console instead of the GUI dashboard would be better.""The solution is expensive."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"This product requires licenses for advanced features including Snort, IPS, and malware detection.""I know that licensing for some of the advanced solutions, like Intrusion Prevention and Secure Malware Analytics, are nominal costs.""The price for Firepower is more expensive than FortiGate. The licensing is very complex. We usually ask for help from Solutel because of its complexity. I have a Cisco account where I can download the VPN client, then connect. Instead, I create an issue with Solutel, then Solutel solves the case.""For me, personally, as an individual, Cisco Firepower NGFW Firewall is expensive.""Its price is in the middle range. Both Firepower and FortiGate are not cheap. Palo Alto and Check Point are the cheapest ones. I don't remember any costs in addition to the standard licensing fees.""The price is comparable.""Cisco is not for a small mom-and-pop shop because of the cost, but if you're in a regulated industry where a breach could cost you a million dollars, it's a bargain.""There are additional implementation and validation costs."

"The price of Fortinet FortiOS has been reasonable.""The support contracts are usually about $100 - $200 a device.""The software costs roughly half what the hardware costs. Overall, the product is expensive.""There is a license required for the solution and the price is fair."
