We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"I am very proud of how very stable the solution is.""Storing logs in Elasticsearch means log retrieval is extremely fast, and full text search is available by default.""What I like about Graylog is that it's real-time and you have access to the raw data. So, you ingest it, and you have access to every message and every data item you ingest. You can then build analytics on top of that. You can look at the raw data, and you can do some volumetric estimations, such as how big traffic you have, how many messages of data of a type you have, etc.""One of the most valuable features is that you are able to do a very detailed search through the log messages in the overview.""Real-time UDP/GELF logging and full text-based searching.""We run a containerized microservices environment. Being able to set up streams and search for errors and anomalies across hundreds of containers is why a log aggregation platform like Graylog is valuable to us.""I like the correlation and the alerting.""The ability to write custom alerts is key to information security and compliance."

"Its interconnectivity with the cloud platforms, such as Azure and AWS, was valuable.""he cloud performance is good.""This is a complete log reporting tool.""Splunk Cloud Platform's search modes are a powerful feature.""The data management and instant search features are the most valuable ones for us, as they allow us to instantly retrieve information needed for reports and security compliance.""The most valuable feature of Splunk Cloud Platform is its flexibility and readiness because it's already prebuilt, and everything is click-to-go.""We only buy the services we need. We don't have to pay for other things we don't.""The initial setup was straightforward."

Cons
"I would like to see some kind of visualization included in Graylog.""There should be some user groups and an auto sign-in feature.""I would like to see a date and time in the Graylog Grok patterns so that I can save time when searching for a log. I like how the streams and the search query work, but adding a date and time will allow me to pull out a log in a milli-second.""The biggest problem is the collector application, as we wanted to avoid using Graylog Collector Sidecar due to its architecture.""More customization is always useful.""Dashboards, stream alerts and parsing could be improved.""Graylog could improve the process of creating rules. We have to create them manually by doing parses and applying them. Other SIEM solutions have basic rules and you can create and get more events of interest.""We ran into problems with Elasticsearch throwing a circuit-breaking exception due to field data size being too large. It turned out that the heap size directly impacted this size in a high-throughput environment, causing unexplained instability in Graylog. We were able to troubleshoot on the Elasticsearch size, but we should have been able to reference some minimum requirements for Graylog to know that our settings weren't sufficient."

More Graylog Cons →

"The on-premises version of Splunk includes all the integrations, while the Cloud platform lacks certain integrations and is limited in terms of the number of supported apps.""Splunk currently manages the components, which restricts our ability to access them directly.""The search for bulk data needs to be improved. When we were looking for the flow, we had to search really hard. I wanted to request the Splunk team to add some features for better search because getting the flow of the bulk data was sometimes hard.""The administration could use improvement. We have to rely on support more often than we're used to.""The training models can only be accessed for 30 days, even if it is paid training.""The Splunk Cloud Platform dashboard could benefit from some improvements.""Its stability and performance can be better. Very rarely does a day go by when we do not see an error in the console, such as a health check error. Because it is cloud-hosted, we do not have access to the backend to figure it out ourselves. We are reliant on their support to figure it out, and a couple of days later, the error comes back or it is a different error. It is a never-ending cycle of support tickets. Their support is also not great.""The only thing I would say is an issue is the cost. It matches other products. The costs can be justified for the value that we gain. The entire threat analysis stack should come in a bundle. If the cost was matchable with other products I think Splunk would pick up in the market."

  • "The licensing is based on the amount of data that we send to the cloud on a daily basis."
  • "The price is something that people complain about."
  • "The licensing costs depend on the state of your environment and the fees are paid on a monthly basis."
  • "The pricing model makes this an expensive solution."
  • "There are additional features that you would need to purchase depending on your use case."
  • "The cost of using Splunk Cloud Platform is high, but the value it provides is worth the investment."
  • "I am familiar with the pricing and licensing model a little bit. I am not sure about the particulars of the actual price that we have, but I do like the idea of going towards a more CPU-based approach rather than the ingest approach because it allows us the ability to ingest more data if we need it."
  • "It is a touchy subject because we are locked into it. That goes back to the rehydrating data. We cannot have the retention that we want to store for legal and compliance purposes because that is seven years' worth of data for some of the indexes, so we ship them off into S3 buckets and install them there, at which point they are invisible to Splunk, so we have to rehydrate them, but we cannot rehydrate those pockets into Splunk Cloud. We have to rehydrate them into a self-hosted version of Splunk, which can take days to set up and get going. I would not call Splunk's licensing and pricing predatory, but they have made it very difficult to maintain the independence of your own data."
