Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It has reduced the amount of switching, network connections, etc., because the converged StarWind Virtual SAN allows us to connect high-speed network interfaces between different boxes instead of having to connect SANs via the network, then connect those two clusters together.""It's quite easy to manage.""I've had to open a few support cases over the years due to administrator errors, and the support received was top-notch.""Ten gigabit Ethernet compatibility, support, ease of use, and management are some positive features.""The most important feature is the ability to experience the loss of one node or one storage device, and not lose the entire cluster.""The biggest benefit was that it allowed us to provide SAN services on a limited hardware budget.""The most useful aspect is the hyper-converged SD SAN and the ease to expand it by just adding cheap SSD or NVME disks.""The most valuable feature is the managed service, which has been an important part of monitoring our critical infrastructure."

"In our implementations, HDS Storage Virtualization has helped in migrating data with the least amount of downtime, compared to other storage technologies.""This solution allowed us to move from using standalone systems to having all our data center management in one place.""The replication technology can move data faster than EMC MirrorView and requires less bandwidth. The Storage Virtualization technology is the most mature in the market, outside of IBM’s Storwize (which has a lot of compatibility issues, and EMC’s very expensive VPLEX solution); and it works."

"You will find the high availability and License Team with Oracle very valuable.""The most valuable features include distinct storage within the Oracle PCA.""It has helped us to reduce Oracle licensing costs for database and applications.""It is scalable as the box can be increased by one compute node, if required.""Supports connection to most of network topology, such as VLAN and network segmentation."

Cons
"I would like to see some additional, and possibly clearer, implementation videos with some slower and possibly more detailed descriptions of what the various steps of implementation are for someone who is unfamiliar with high availability and failover clustering in Windows.""There should be publicly available tutorials on YouTube or other platforms that help the users to integrate this solution with other platforms, for example.""The system performs as expected, but we're always looking for performance improvements regarding the best utilization of NVMe disks.""The software monitoring should be web-based to be reachable from any VLAN workstation.""The cluster configuration is time-consuming and tedious.""I did not see any indication that StarWinds vSAN is a usable solution with non-GUI instances of Hyper-V.""Besides not being able to use any filesystem, I do not have any additional cons.""I wish the sync after a failure, such as hardware failure or power-related issues, for example, was faster."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"HDS reaches a ceiling depending on model. The G200 cannot transition to G400, the G400 can transition to G600 but cannot transition to G800, which is the top-end model.""An update to its technology would be good. The G Series has been around for more than five years and HDS seriously needs to ramp up, since the competition has better performance at a lower cost with better features and functionalities. For example, it needs redirect on write Snapshot, preconfigured storage tiering with better IOPS, built-in deduplication technology on hybrid disk, etc.""An area for improvement would be technical support. In the next release, I would like to see more features added to make this a more complete solution."

More Hitachi Unified Compute Platform HC Series Cons →

"In comparison to competitors like VMware, there's a perceived need for Oracle to enhance OVM, making it more flexible and user-friendly.""The initial setup was very complex.""Patching processing takes a long time. Only one compute node is patched at a time.""OVM Manager Interface is using HTML5. It should be reconverted to be a Java interface."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

    Information Not Available
  • "If you have many Oracle products, such as databases, middleware, and apps, it will help you reduce Oracle app licences and support costs."
  • "No licenses for the shipped software or firmware."
  • "It is more expensive than the normal solution or the hyper-converged system."
  • "It is relatively cost-effective."
