Quotes From Members Comparing Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform F Series vs. Tintri VMstore

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
The first thing that attracted this model to us was the non-disruptive migration. We had a very large database application that was on older gear and needed to be migrated to these arrays. We had experience with virtualizing behind an array and moving applications and data but this made it even better.

It’s very good at IOPS.It is fast and reliable. There hasn’t been a single failure in three years of use.The Deduplication feature in VDI environments. If Tintri says we can host 3000 VMs in our storage, I know we can host 3000 VMs there. Believe the results.A very good support team that is available 24/7. They have real technical staff with strong knowledge.Web GUI for maintenance and resource monitoring purposes is easy to use.Upgrades are super easy and can be done during business hours without interruptions in production. Its speed has been absolutely fantastic. Its VM-aware features have been excellent to use and integrate with XenServer as well.

Cons
The software has always been lagging a bit compared to the newer features. It usually takes a cycle for it to catch up.

I would like it to have the ability to store data other than virtual machines. At the moment, you can only connect VMs to it, and that’s a bit disappointing. In sync and automated mirror between two Tintris is missing.I would love more insight into each virtual machine statistic. The Tintri Analytics site is excellent for long-term trending, but more data would be great. The product could be improved by adding iSCSI support. We have had to rethink how we implement some of our services due to this.I think with the world soon becoming only SSD, possibly NVMe, and 3D Xpoint. It would make sense for Tintri to drop the hybrid array down the line.Active/active cluster between two Tintris on Hyper-V cluster.Speed of our VDI machines. We have a very high log in and log out ratio and machines are being refreshed instantly so we have a constant boot storm on our storage.

Pricing and Cost Advice
The pricing we get is very competitive when compared to other vendors. Hitachi is working on their licensing model and it is improving but can be irksome when many different items are not bundled or enterprise size.

The area it needs to improve is the pricing. It could be better.Make sure that you have all licenses in one go. Options afterwards can cost extra. An "all-in-one" license model would be better at this price range.Ensure the storage system "natively" supports the protocols that you wish to use (i.e., CIFS) without the need for the overhead of internal "conversion VMs" that run the protocols.Tintri is reasonably priced for the solution you get. Advanced features do require extra to use.The licensing model is relatively simple. For things like replication, however, the licensing needs to be looked at.Prices are not cheap, but it runs.I think it is a very good solution. You get a good bang for buck.
