Find out what your peers are saying about HPE 3PAR Flash Storage vs. IBM Storwize and other solutions. Updated: January 2019.
317,134 professionals have used our research since 2012.
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Scalability, because our customer is fast growing and our solution should be able to start very small and grow very quickly.
The chunklet technology is the main benefit out of 3PAR. The way it subdivides. It is using more logic to subdivide the drives into smaller pieces.
With our 3PARs, we have never lost data.
With the new flash arrays, 3PAR has improved our performance.
The new StoreServ Management Console (SSMC) tool is more user-friendly.
HPE can login, fix things, alert us to things, and upgrade. We are there and aware, but we do not do the work. So, that is good.
3PAR is easy to keep running and does not require too much effort. It has been very reliable, which is key.
The scalability is good because it is easy to add in new disks. We just add them on the fly, and they are available for use.
They have a virtualization feature and, even if you do not want to buy that feature, you can have it as a trial for two to three months. If you have another brand of storage from another company, you can use this tool to transfer all your data from the old system to the new Storwize system, which really shortens the migration time.
High availability and enhanced security; Proven dependability; Data compression with hardware acceleration; Advanced copy services features are all in this product.
The GUI is very easy and performance is also good.
Virtualization of external storage, while adding cache and speed to the external storage.
Ability to manage third-party arrays and virtualise them: One screen to control multiple arrays. Simplified administration.
User friendly management interface.
The valuable features for us are the extra add-ons, such as the FIM provisioning, the compression, the disaster recovery capabilities, and the storage pooling functions.
The valuable features are high availability, compression, and a failover mechanism. It's a very highly available storage solution.
Security is a mandatory feature because our customer needs to protect delicate information.
I would like to see a faster Ethernet connection. Right now, it is 10G. If they could do multiple hundred gigs to speed up the transfer from the array to the servers, that would be good. We are trying to get away from Fibre Channel.
We need additional enhancements to InfoSight, especially from a VM standpoint. Today, we can see in the Azure VM performance stats in 3PAR, but it is so huge, we can't just drill down on each and every VM and look at its performance.
We are seeing that there are some enhancements which are required in the SSMC console. There are some features that we do not see in the dashboard.
There are some weird things that we can't figure out.
I would like to see the ability to be able to migrate to newer versions of the 3PAR without having to take any of our data offline and be able to upgrade on the fly.
We would like to see better support for iSCSI.
A lot of tasks, you have to manually set up. They need to already have them set up and working. Then, you can just go in and tweak them if you need to.
I have looked at a few pages of a report I download and I saw a graph there regarding software-defined vendors. IBM is not in a good position on this graph. I know that they are working very hard on this, to make it much better and to get to a level where it's not only hardware but also software to provide a complete solution.
GUI interface should be enhanced more as there is some issues in copy services.
Replication features need improvement. Currently, they are there in the product, but I'm not sure as to how it works exactly.
Events/log analysis tools.
One area for improvement is in the GUI, where host clusters are not properly dealt with. With Hypervisor host clusters, all hosts must see the same volumes in the same order. Using the concept of a “host-group” has been around (even with IBM) for many years, so why not with the V7000?
Product support is restricted to IBM only. It must be decentralized to IBM partners as well.
AHV is Acropolis Hypervisor – A relatively new Hypervisor, robust and stable as VMware vSphere, has built-in advanced analytics and powerful operations, Self Service Portal and components for DevOps included, managed by a single pane of glass (Prism) via HTML5 and it is free of charge – That is why Nutanix is so advanced and revolutionary.
I know they have a flashcopy manager, but it is extra software, an additional license, and some customers don't like to add addition costs to their infrastructure. If IBM could create, or include snapshot management within the GUI, that would really be helpful.
Pricing and Cost Advice
Making the decisions to buy it can be complex.
Since the prices of the flash storage has gone down tremendously, I would definitely recommend going for the all-flash storage array or 3PAR. It is a big expensive even now, but it will be the future of all industries.
You can't get software maintenance from a third party. You have to do it from HPE, which is a letdown.
3PAR was quite a bit less money than EMC, and that was one of the deciding factors.
We had to go back and purchase iLO licenses and brocade switches for the flex fabric to have a complete solution.
Cost-wise, it is a little bit on the higher side, but it is an awesome product.
We are going to buy eight nodes this year and eight nodes next year. Eventually, we are not going to want to buy large storage devices and probably utilize just storage, but in a different manner going forward.
It is a little more money, but it is worth it because it does it better.
The pricing has been very competitive for the last few years. IBM got to the point where they changed the pricing model and we feel very comfortable with the pricing. It's very competitive. Over the last two years, IBM has been coming up with all kinds of interesting promos, especially for the SMB systems. That makes it very competitive price-wise and in terms of performance...
IBM V7000 has a new license and price structure which provides intuitive licensing based on the functions customers wish to enable and use the most.
Regarding licensing make sure you add at least three years software maintenance from IBM at the beginning, because you will not be able to download firmware updates or any fixes/patches without this.
It pays to go back and get the best price you can from your supplier. The first offer is not always at the best discount.
