Quotes From Members Comparing HPE 3PAR Flash Storage vs Nimble Storage

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
The optimization features move chunklets or hot spots to faster drives. The 3PAR tool is cheaper to maintain with more storage available.Previously, we were using EVA from HPE. When we moved to 3PAR, we noticed a reduction in footprint, reduced by more than 30%. We use the Adaptive Optimization, giving us a reduction in cost and with better performance.Since it's being used to support a virtual infrastructure, that gives us access to all of the benefits of a virtual infrastructure. So, instead of spending hours trying to rebuild or to fix a broken server, we can instead wipe it out and throw up a new one and we're up and running again.I like the speed capabilities that it provides. The deduplication features definitely have some huge potential. The latest firmware, where they've enabled compression for workloads that aren't very good for deduplication, I can definitely see huge potential there. It provides very fast deployment. The performance for our most critical applications is very quick. Thanks to HPE remote IT assistance, they can do the updates with the configuration in best-case scenario. It is easy to scale, easy to manage, and easy to configure.

InfoSight - analytics sight that collects data for all Nimble arrays deployedIt has totally taken away a layer of time and effort, management-wise, from two engineers to give that time back into developing more solutions. It has provided us essentially with a platform to go away and be more creative, knowing that that is stable and can do whatever we chuck at it.Regarding their support, you always get through to somebody who knows exactly what they're talking about.Any updates are just part of your subscription, so you don't have to buy add-ons for new features. You're continually adding value to it.The tech support for Nimble Storage is exceptional. You go straight through to a third-line technician. I can't ask for more than that. It's streamlined our storage platform. We've consolidated everything down to the Nimble Storage platform. So we've got a single service provider, a single common platform. It has reduced the support costs. It has reduced staff costs in terms of time dealing with different platforms. In regards to stability, I haven't had a single moment of downtime in seven years. It's given us more time to do the important things, less time worrying about SANs and failures and picking up the pieces. It just works.

Cons
The management interface is not intuitive.Extending is not a problem, scalability is okay. But once you buy additional box of disks, you have to wait for HPE to contact you with their plan for implementation, for connecting, and it can take several weeks. So, you have the box and you have to wait for several weeks to actually implement it.I would like to see more virtualization: storage virtualization, data virtualization would be very nice.HPE has a product that I am very interested in, but it lacks of integration with 3PAR - HPE SimpliVity.I would like them to improve it so I can do firmware upgrades without downtime.Would like to see some management functions through a web interface.Generally, the management of the multiple systems that we have is really the only problem, always having to go to all these separate tools to manage everything. We would like to see the ability to not only be integrated with hybrid IT, but on-prem.

We have had some stability issues with one array which has happened twice during subsequent software updates but is due to a bad Postgres database.More reporting is probably the only thing that is really lacking. It would be helpful to go to the business and say, "This is how we've evolved with our solution, and this is why we need more." Being able to put forward a business case with data to back it up, essentially.I'd like to see more granular quality of service rules. Currently, I think currently there's not much room for maximum IOPS, but there's not an option for minimum IOPS for a given volume. The backup solution that they are using now probably has not been deduped.Nimble requires its DNS to work in order to interface with VMware vCenter is a little thorn in my eye, but I am being nitpicky here. The amount of firmware updates released seem excessive.I would like to see integration with OneView, at least for reporting or some sort of monitoring.I really would like to see synchronous replication. This is something that when we have multiple arrays in our environment and being able to do something like a zero RPO.

Pricing and Cost Advice
As a school, we always have low budgets. We are a nonprofit organization. We do not have too much budget, so we care about prices, discounts, and especially about the product quality. The last 16 years, we have been an HPE customer. We are very much happy with HPE products.Nowadays, from a storage point of view, there are so many vendors in the market. So cost is one of the factors that pushed us to go with HPE 3PAR. Cost-wise they're pretty competitive. The main issue with 3PAR right now is its cost problem. Right now, there are some other storage cabinets that can do what 3PAR can do. Now, they can do it as well with a more revised budget. To be more competitive, as customer, we need a more aggressive price that includes all the licenses available. It's very reliable and it was cost competitive with other arrays at the time that we purchased it.

It is cost-effective, which is important for a service provider, because you're competing with hyper-scale providers who do things at extremely large scale, who tend to kill you on price if you're not careful. It is expensive, but it is worth the “uptime”.Competitive. No licensing. Since everything is included. From a price/performance perspective, Nimble simply can’t be beat. From a TCO perspective, the stability alone pays for itself.
