Quotes From Members Comparing HPE 3PAR Flash Storage vs. Nutanix

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
The clients that we support have a tendency to come at us with unexpected requirements, and we are able to adapt well with the 3PARs.We have used tech support for array expansion, as well as firmware updates. We have had great success with them.Scalability, because our customer is fast growing and our solution should be able to start very small and grow very quickly. The chunklet technology is the main benefit out of 3PAR. The way it subdivides. It is using more logic to subdivide the drives into smaller pieces. With our 3PARs, we have never lost data. With the new flash arrays, 3PAR has improved our performance. The new StoreServ Management Console (SSMC) tool is more user-friendly.HPE can login, fix things, alert us to things, and upgrade. We are there and aware, but we do not do the work. So, that is good.

Nutanix has several unique capabilities to ensure linear scalability. The level of statistical performance data that it can confirm in real-time is extremely useful. I can see what my VM’s hosts and guests are doing from a single pane of glass and identify issues before they would otherwise become apparent.SRM capabilities for replication have been proven reliable and very useful for our organization. It has seamless expandability.Their Google operating system is more mature, so their results are much better.Prism Central allows managing the cluster from a single pane of glass, and it allows a deeper dive into the solution. They have one of the best technical supports in my experience.Simplified management: It provides us more time to work on other tasks.

Cons
When you run across a situation where they aren't self-encrypting drives (SEDs), and you need SEDs, then you have to rip and replace everything to get there. It would be nice if they just came by default.Security is a mandatory feature because our customer needs to protect delicate information.I would like to see a faster Ethernet connection. Right now, it is 10G. If they could do multiple hundred gigs to speed up the transfer from the array to the servers, that would be good. We are trying to get away from Fibre Channel. We need additional enhancements to InfoSight, especially from a VM standpoint. Today, we can see in the Azure VM performance stats in 3PAR, but it is so huge, we can't just drill down on each and every VM and look at its performance. We are seeing that there are some enhancements which are required in the SSMC console. There are some features that we do not see in the dashboard. There are some weird things that we can't figure out.I would like to see the ability to be able to migrate to newer versions of the 3PAR without having to take any of our data offline and be able to upgrade on the fly.We would like to see better support for iSCSI.

There is a need is to be able to consume Nutanix storage from outside the cluster for other, non-Nutanix workloads.Regarding third-party backup solutions, the only agentless option is Commvault, which is expensive, complex, and requires intensive vendor training. We would like to see it support other systems outside of the compute stack from which it was built. They should support more VM, which is not currently supported.I would like better integration of XenServer into the AOS and Prism Central.Make it easier to manage.Reduce its power consumption.Native File-Services are under heavy development and Container Services just came out.

Pricing and Cost Advice
The lifespan of the arrays are fantastic, so we can make them stretch for our dollar.Making the decisions to buy it can be complex.Since the prices of the flash storage has gone down tremendously, I would definitely recommend going for the all-flash storage array or 3PAR. It is a big expensive even now, but it will be the future of all industries. You can't get software maintenance from a third party. You have to do it from HPE, which is a letdown.3PAR was quite a bit less money than EMC, and that was one of the deciding factors. We had to go back and purchase iLO licenses and brocade switches for the flex fabric to have a complete solution.Cost-wise, it is a little bit on the higher side, but it is an awesome product. We are going to buy eight nodes this year and eight nodes next year. Eventually, we are not going to want to buy large storage devices and probably utilize just storage, but in a different manner going forward.

I don't feel that I am receiving the performance which I am paying for.Work close with your InfraTeam and discuss with Nutanix the best way to achieve sizing and price that are right for you.Licensing depends on the features needed.Extra features should not be so expensive. We would love to be able to use or even just try some of the extra features without having to buy them. Buying those features is just as expensive as buying vSphere licenses, so the cost savings is nullified.Setup cost is minor, pricing is quite a bit (we have a 7-node-cluster for about 450K EUR with 2 vGPU-nodes for Citrix) but that includes hardware, software, and support. While cost may seem higher than your traditional 3-tier architecture, you need to look at the bigger picture. You're not just buying hardware here. You're buying a complete environment.I know Nutanix and VxRail have similar prices and licenses. Nutanix is a go-ahead if AHV is used as hypervisor because it is already embedded in the price. The basic license that comes with the box allows basic virtualization features but advanced automation features would require an upgrade of licenses.
