Quotes From Members Comparing HPE 3PAR Flash Storage vs Pure Storage

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
The optimization features move chunklets or hot spots to faster drives. The 3PAR tool is cheaper to maintain with more storage available.Previously, we were using EVA from HPE. When we moved to 3PAR, we noticed a reduction in footprint, reduced by more than 30%. We use the Adaptive Optimization, giving us a reduction in cost and with better performance.Since it's being used to support a virtual infrastructure, that gives us access to all of the benefits of a virtual infrastructure. So, instead of spending hours trying to rebuild or to fix a broken server, we can instead wipe it out and throw up a new one and we're up and running again.I like the speed capabilities that it provides. The deduplication features definitely have some huge potential. The latest firmware, where they've enabled compression for workloads that aren't very good for deduplication, I can definitely see huge potential there. It provides very fast deployment. The performance for our most critical applications is very quick. Thanks to HPE remote IT assistance, they can do the updates with the configuration in best-case scenario. It is easy to scale, easy to manage, and easy to configure.

The most valuable features are extremely low latency, high IOPS with VMware, inline deduplication and compression. The amount of data that I have moved to it from legacy storage has enabled us to retire units that are three or four times the physical size. The deduplication and compression rates are beyond impressive.I never have to worry about its performance or if it is the root cause of an issue. It has made working with storage as easy and simple as it should be.The GUI is very easy to use and intuitive.Non-disruptive upgrades: You can upgrade at anytime without worry.Very stable; no worries about how much it can handle.

Cons
The management interface is not intuitive.Extending is not a problem, scalability is okay. But once you buy additional box of disks, you have to wait for HPE to contact you with their plan for implementation, for connecting, and it can take several weeks. So, you have the box and you have to wait for several weeks to actually implement it.I would like to see more virtualization: storage virtualization, data virtualization would be very nice.HPE has a product that I am very interested in, but it lacks of integration with 3PAR - HPE SimpliVity.I would like them to improve it so I can do firmware upgrades without downtime.Would like to see some management functions through a web interface.Generally, the management of the multiple systems that we have is really the only problem, always having to go to all these separate tools to manage everything. We would like to see the ability to not only be integrated with hybrid IT, but on-prem.

I’d love to view the average, minimum and maximum performance in the reports (Analysis tab - Performance) but it is only graphics and you need to export data in CSV to find this information.Just some nit picky stuff, like allowing servers and volumes to be grouped. Therefore, it would easier to work with them in the GUI.I would like some form of QoS implemented. As a service provider, it would be beneficial to have it.I would like to see more detailed reporting on the data. However, it would be nice to know what are the exact VMs usage after deduplication and/or what that VMs actual latency and bandwidth is, outside of VMware. The internal garbage collection process has been fixed recently in some OS updates so it is more efficient but that could be just a little better.Had some issues with Purity not being entirely compatible with VMware ESXi.The number of Filesystems is limited, which it is not on the EMC VNX.

Pricing and Cost Advice
As a school, we always have low budgets. We are a nonprofit organization. We do not have too much budget, so we care about prices, discounts, and especially about the product quality. The last 16 years, we have been an HPE customer. We are very much happy with HPE products.Nowadays, from a storage point of view, there are so many vendors in the market. So cost is one of the factors that pushed us to go with HPE 3PAR. Cost-wise they're pretty competitive. The main issue with 3PAR right now is its cost problem. Right now, there are some other storage cabinets that can do what 3PAR can do. Now, they can do it as well with a more revised budget. To be more competitive, as customer, we need a more aggressive price that includes all the licenses available. It's very reliable and it was cost competitive with other arrays at the time that we purchased it.

For pricing, you have to take into account their performance on deduplication and compression in a $/GB comparison. It is a more expensive solution, but it is worth it. You are getting what you paid for.The price was slightly higher than others, but competitive, if you consider all the other features that you get from it.There is always room for negotiation. We feel that the pricing is fair and the licensing process was easy for both.
