We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The ability to choose our own hardware and our own vendors for this was hugely beneficial, as we had pre-existing relationships with vendors we wanted to maintain.""The primary purpose of this software is to create a virtual SAN between local storage on Hyper-V hosts. I find this feature most valuable since it accomplishes this quite well.""The access to our data is quicker and cheaper than it used to be in a traditional storage system.""A typical system administrator with minimal experience in Hyper-V, VMware, or Windows can do VSAN configuration and maintain VSAN operations.""Being hardware agnostic is a must and definitely scored points for us.""It has great free trials that allow end users to test a large variety of their products before deciding to buy the full product.""When we need additional storage but want to keep the size of the SANs manageable, the StarWind Virtual SAN has allowed me to do everything needed.""StarWind vSAN has a lot of great features and is a perfect solution for mirroring internal disks and flash between servers."

"The HPE Hyper Converged solution is used in a hybrid cloud configuration. We assess the disk space and partition additional capacity.""Our storage and IT are now at an enterprise level with all the necessary controls and restrictions being enacted.""We like the fact that the hyper-converged infrastructure provides a simple to grow, easy to configure platform.""The scalability of this tool is very good. You can basically add more storage and seamlessly expand the current storage that you have.""The product enables me to use any software or database.""It provides unmatched performance, productivity and reliability.""It is a stable solution...Those who want flexibility, ease of use, and a simple support system can opt for HPE.""The provisioning is very fast. It’s not a problem for us to achieve the goals of the client."

"The most valuable features are the appliance-type feel and that you don't need additional licenses as everything is built-in.""The most valuable feature of the solution is the nice GUI.""The most valuable feature of Scale Computing HC3 is if one of the devices fails, you won't even notice, the service maintains operation. The customers don't have to waste two, or three days on delays. Additionally, you do not have to waste time with recovery software, it is a lot easier.""I like that Scale Computing HCR is slimmed down and gives me the features I need and not features that I don't need.""I rate Scale Computing support 10 out of 10. They're accessible and responsive.""The initial setup is pretty straightforward.""The solution is scalable."

Cons
"The system performs as expected, but we're always looking for performance improvements regarding the best utilization of NVMe disks.""We would like to see the documentation more fully developed.""We just need more integration with Veeam.""They recommend RAID10 for HDD, which reduces the usable storage capacity.""The documentation could be clearer in terms of explaining the installation.""Updates seem to be non-existent.""The software could benefit from more tooling to help with initial deployment.""Besides not being able to use any filesystem, I do not have any additional cons."

"This solution is very costly.""We have faced some challenges when upgrading. With Hyper Converged, you have to fully upgrade because there are no incremental upgrades available in this solution. For example, let's say we have two nodes. If we want to upgrade storage, we also need to upgrade computing. That means a full upgrade EME.""Scalability is an issue because it becomes very expensive. When you need to upgrade memory, you have to upgrade memory across the nodes. Suppose a customer has gone with a three-node HCI solution, then to increase the memory, you have to do it across the three nodes.""I would like to see a more intuitive, user-friendly UI.""The storage efficiency is weak and needs to be improved.""Could be more secure and more economical.""I would like to see improvement in the hardware underneath it. Currently, it's a Gen9 DL380. One day, there will be a Gen10 DL380 and maybe they will have bigger or smaller sizes.""The solution can be improved on the management side. More management features should be added to future releases."

More HPE Hyper Converged Cons →

"The product struggles to cope with bigger workloads. In the next release, I'd like some backup solutions to be added.""I've had so many issues with the sales team when I was looking to make some improvements, and improve the performance. They would create so many excuses to force me to buy new nodes all the time and not let me add more memory to each node.""Scale Computing HC3 said in an announcement they were going to integrate with a backup service which would be good. If they could do this it would be beneficial.""The snapshot technology takes up 500 times more space compared to other solutions.""The product could use a better control center.""I would like bigger clusters with more than eight nodes.""Scale HC3 improvements would involve literally fixing up the replication."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

  • "It could be cheaper, everything could be cheaper."
  • "With this solution, I buy everything together, pre-packaged, pre-installed, and in just 15 minutes, it's installed."
  • "The price per value compared to other solutions, like Nutanix and SimpliVity. (We made the deal before approval of HPE SimpliVity deal)."
  • "Pricing with Dell EMC is double the price which I paid for HPE. However, in the end, Dell EMC is double in performance. This is not an apple to apple comparison though, as I have a four node from Dell EMC and a three node."
  • "It is an expensive solution, however. If they could adjust the pricing, that would be helpful."
  • "The solution is too expensive for our customers. The pricing should be lower."
  • "The solution is expensive - not only the hardware costs but server costs too. And the more you scale, the more expensive it gets."
  • "There are costs in addition to the standard licensing fees."
  • More HPE Hyper Converged Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "I pay for Scale Computing HC3 and it includes customer service for one year. We paid for an additional year for customer service but that includes the updates and everything for the software. Additionally, the licensing is for Windows, which is the same for everybody."
  • "I give the pricing a nine out of ten."
  • "rate HC3's pricing a five out of ten since it is affordable."
