We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
Among the valuable features are that it's a complete solution, it's easy to use, and there is not a lot of management time involved in operating the solution.A very small package but with lots of memory and CPU.The biggest benefit of this solution is that If you use it, you can use it for the company headquarters and also for all the branches. You use the same system, only a smaller size. With SimipliVity you can also use the included backup solution. You don't need any other solution to back up the data or to transfer it.The most valuable aspect of the HPE SimpliVity is the DL380 G10. We have mostly been using VMware and Hyper-V. On one side we have Hyper-V and the other side we have the VMware. The scalability is its most valuable feature. It's also able to do stretch clustering. The solution's simplicity is its most valuable feature. The usability is also good. The rate of compression for the data in SimpliVity is the most valuable feature. As a point for optimization on our infrastructure, it works great for us.

The solution’s ransomware recovery, from a security perspective, is one of the biggest features of the product. We don't have to worry about the operational complexity of air-gapped backups and can rely more on the immutability approach. It is a highly valued feature in this solution.I would rate the solution's web interface at eight out of ten. It's just fantastic and intuitive. It's so easy to use. I've never done any formal training on Rubrik, but I was able to quickly come to grips with its capabilities. The archiving, off-of-box, is awesome. It lets you put your data where you want it and gives you the peace of mind of having more than one copy of it. And it's smart about the way that it does the archiving. It doesn't just copy one-for-one. It does all of its processing of the deduplication and compression before it sends it off to the archive, which helps with our cloud costs. The Live Mount is one of the most valuable features Rubrik has. It gives me an opportunity to run DR testing. For any patching or DR testing that I need to do, I'm able to run it as if it were my production system but, in reality, it's just a copy of my production system. The fact that the API is so available to us with the playground — there's an internal and public playground — is also valuable. We can write API calls — and although I'm sure there's a way we could hurt the data — we write those calls with a lot of certainty that we won't be destroying anything. We write these API calls using really easy mechanisms and generate automation a lot faster. Also, the web interface is really great. The design, from a user-experience standpoint, is really straightforward and easy to use... they nailed it. Usually, from the very first panel, the dashboard that you land on after login, you've got most of your functionality right around where you need it to be. You've got your new items on the left, you've got your support on the top right. Nothing really seems out of place or just stuck in someplace. The tech support is extremely helpful. The live mounting and compatibility of different operating systems is great.

Cons
I would like to see it be a truly hybrid-cloud solution where I could take my on-prem SimpliVity environment and have replication to a cloud install.I would like them to add more connection capability, a hub and spoke model, to improve the number of connections that it can handle. The price is quite high. The system could also be more scalable.A lot of our customers are using VMware and also are using Hyper-V. Hyper-V is not very stable on the HP SimpliVity.I would like to see it able to restore item levels, especially for databases. The initial setup was a little complex because we were in the first version, fresh releases. When we make some upgrades to the platform, it does take time to stabilize the structure again. The initial setup was complex. It took a few months to integrate and adapt to the new platform.

There is room for improvement through a further extension of their Office 365 backup platform. In addition, it's still a bit cost-prohibitive to backup NAS. Those would be the two primary areas for improvement. We would like to be able to do granular restores directly from Exchange. Also, more granular management of VM backups would help. The deployment and configuration of the backup service is something that could be streamlined a little bit, particularly when you're trying to do a SQL workload. You have to install a backup service on the server. You only have to do it once and then you're done, but you have to do that on every server that you want to protect.[A] feature that the product can improve on is being able to restore Active Directory at a more granular level. For example, it would be good if we could restore actual memberships for users instead of the entire server.I have a personal want which might not necessarily make sense with Rubrik as a company or Rubrik as a software, but it'd be really nice if they could also handle things like item-level backups and restores of Active Directory objects and DNS and DCP objects. Its cost is high.I would like to have a built-in index searching ability of files/system files within the Rubrik interface to determine if a file or item exists, rather than just recovering it, and then doing a search for the file afterwards.Global management of multiple systems is lacking, as is reporting across multiple installed units.

Pricing and Cost Advice
We're paying $3,000-$4,000 a month. It's about $10,000 monthly. For three years, it is $60,000 for three nodes. It is quite pricey. The only thing that I think we are paying for is the VMware licenses, but we are enterprise, so it is not horrible. For the VMware licensing, it is approximately $10,000 a year. The time savings on the administration side of things is huge. We had somebody who was dedicated pretty much full-time to hardware, and now, they spend about a quarter of their time a year on hardware-related issues.Upfront costs seems high at first look, but after analyzing all the benefits of SimpliVity, we have come out ahead. It has helped to reduce our VMware licensing costs due to host consolidation.

We do perpetual licensing... It was all based on the amount of storage we needed to use. We did a cost analysis compared to Tivoli and it was in line with other solutions. We pay yearly and it's based on the number of bricks. It is a great value, but its cost is still a bit high. The product is not cheap, but for good reason. It simply works and is very fast.Rubrik is not cheap. Hopefully, you can archive your data on cheap storage to keep the investment minimal. The cost was less than our previous provider, and this is a much better product.
