It has given the company an almost zero possibility of downtime. The most valuable feature is the reliable storage replication, which enables me to create a robust infrastructure to run our business.StarWind vSAN is a great solution to create a redundant two-node-only Hyper-V cluster, both for domain or workgroup scenarios. We have experienced multiple hardware failures at one site and the fault-tolerant volume worked exactly as expected with zero downtime. When using new (warranty) servers, you can forget about the storage service for several years. The users will not even notice the failure of two servers out of three.A typical system administrator with minimal experience in Hyper-V, VMware, or Windows can do VSAN configuration and maintain VSAN operations. It allows me to configure High Availability and failover clustering with some fault tolerance, at a cost point that doesn’t break the bank for a small business budget. The most valuable feature of this solution is the support. They are excellent and you can learn a lot from the support team.

Cons
In our country, Qatar, most of the industry isn't using too much HP. StoreVirtual doesn't move fast. It's not a popular product. It is a costly solution. The management aspect of the solution needs to be improved in order to make the product stronger. The initial setup could be simplified to make it easier for new users. The solution needs to ensure it is on par with the industry in terms of availability of features and various other options. One of the areas that need improvement is the consolidated management platform, to manage all of the nodes from one place and the licensing around that.I would like to have this solution easily integrate with VMware.Hardware and disk failures are happening frequently.

New versions of this solution should be tested more thoroughly before the release as we had a few problems with one version due to a bug.I wish the sync after a failure, such as hardware failure or power-related issues, for example, was faster.Being able to run StarWind vSAN on top of any free UNIX operating system to build a resilient iSCSI/FTP/SMB storage system would be useful. If there was one feature I would like to see it would be a built-in subsystem for managing UPS backups shutdown procedures providing a way to initiate VM shutdown on all host servers, shut down the host servers, then put the fault-tolerant mirroring in standby, and finally shut down the StarWind SANs.For the StarWind VSA vSphere solution, I would like to see a simpler and automated virtual machine installation process in terms of network settings. This solution should be more self-sufficient, running without creating domains or failover clusters.I would like to see some additional, and possibly clearer, implementation videos with some slower and possibly more detailed descriptions of what the various steps of implementation are for someone who is unfamiliar with high availability and failover clustering in Windows.I wish there was online support because email return takes a long time and a faster solution should be found.

Pricing and Cost Advice
It costs less than $10,000 for one machine. If it costs more than 15% higher than this, then the customer may change to another solution. For our organization, I believe the cost is 16,000 Euros for a three-year license. It costs a bit more to do the maintenance on our servers as well. It's also on an HP ProLiant server and an organization will need to do the maintenance there also. I believe the price for that is around 2000 Euros a year.

The cost, including OPEX, is lower compared to other solutions. The cost takes into account the number of nodes, so the size of the storage is not important.Licensing is easy and the whole package is cost-effective.There are two tiers of support and in my opinion, support is worth the cost. This solution has competitive prices and the implementation is very easy. The free version is great to use for labs or test environments. This solution has a great price for the functionality.Licensing is based on nodes rather than TBs, which means that the users are free to increase storage capacity without putting thought into licensing.

Overview

HPE StoreVirtual storage ensures that organisations can optimise the benefits of server virtualisation with cost-effective high availability and disaster recovery. The iSCSI-based, scale-out storage platform is easy to manage and change – meeting ongoing business demands without creating IT bottlenecks or application downtime. Overcoming the cost and management limitations of traditional storage area networks (SANs), HPE StoreVirtual nodes use storage clustering to form a single pool of resources that enable organisations to buy only what they need today, scaling non-disruptively to meet requirements in the future.

For SMB, ROBO, Cloud and Hosting providers, who look to cut down virtualization expenses, our solution is StarWind VSAN. It is software that eliminates any need in physical shared storage by basically “mirroring” internal hard disks and flash between hypervisor servers. There is less hardware to buy in general, consequently less money is spent on purchase and maintenance. The existing hardware is used with maximum efficiency, so there is no money wasted at all.

StarWind Virtual SAN targets those who already have servers, or are bound to a particular vendor list to buy from. In case there is a new virtualization infrastructure to be built from scratch, StarWind offers a much better way – StarWind HyperConverged Appliance. It is a turnkey solution complete with hardware and software, powered by StarWind Virtual SAN. Those who need to build and maintain virtualization infrastructure at little to no expense, may be interested in StarWind Virtual SAN Free.
