Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It provides our customers with the comfort of having reliable enterprise data protection.""IBM Spectrum Protect offers stable software and products.""Our performance is better.""It allows us to have one interface.""The solution can back up every kind of workload in the environment.""Replication processes with container storage pools allow reduction of storage space and network bandwidth, using deduplication and compression.""We apply the new dedupe and compression technology, using maintenance and time to give more time for the backup window and less time for the overhead related to the daily housekeeping.""When I have to do disaster recoveries, I can do it with this tool."

Cons
"They need to do a better job on Windows, because if you are running Windows, the scalability is more limited than AIX and Linux.""We have run into some periods where we have found some tape issues which were causing us problems, but we resolved them. For some reason, we had a bunch of drives go offline on our disk storage (our virtual library).""They should introduce more features for virtualization platforms and backing up IBMs. Backup speeds should also be improved.""The product’s recovery process in terms of agent installation needs improvement""Their support is lacking. I've talked to their developers and stuff in the last couple of weeks and they reassure me that some people have retired, and they're working on getting that bumped back up. But the support lacks a lot to be desired at this point.""If IBM could provide a partial module, that would be great.""They can include more cloud-enriching features. I would like IBM Spectrum Protect to have the functionality for backing up a VM directly in Azure. I would like to be able to back up a VM directly in Azure without spinning up a Hyper-V cluster and backing up the virtual server.""I am not really impressed with the Level 1 support, but once I get past that and go to Level 2, then we will usually get some type of resolution."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Technical support is pretty good. It is doing fine, but you pay for it."
  • "Licensing can be either complicated or simple depending on what type of licensing you wish to use and what works best for your environment."
  • "At scale, the consumption license (per TB) is very expensive."
  • "Use capacity licensing. It's easier and cheaper."
  • "We worked our licensing into a capacity model, which is nice. Now, everything is much simpler to manage from a licensing perspective."
  • "We chose IBM Spectrum Protect, because they actually have something called MSP pricing, which means managed services provider pricing. The pricing was attractive, and it seems to be a platform that IBM is totally investing on in terms of new functions and new capabilities."
  • "Spectrum Protect is not expensive, and it is simple to use."
  • "It is very scalable, but the downside is that it costs money."
