Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"One of the main things that I like about IBM is the versioning of the data - meaning that we can have multiple versions of a file or directory of a server.""Every time we go and try to get a file, we can get it. Restores are quick and the data is always there.""The ability to use S3 Data Store as a repository.""Scalability is pretty much unlimited.""The interface is easy to use.""It is also a product that has been maturing for a long time. This is good because customers need reliability in their enterprise initiatives.""The most valuable features are compression and de-duplication.""It scales from very small to very large. It is easily the most scalable product out there."

"When I have had to use tech support, they've been very good.""It is a quick and easy way to organize my backups and to keep track of them.""When we talk about a backup point of view, from a backup perspective, it's a good one.""The predictive analytics are great and the reporting is awesome.""They have great support.""It is very easy to set up and get started. Almost too easy. We racked this device and had it up and running in less than 15 minutes.""It is an easy system to use. The support, if needed, is always willing to help.""The most valuable feature of Unitrends for me is the automated feedback"

Cons
"Restoring massive files is a very time-consuming process.""The user interface (UI) for the admin is still not good. It is way too complicated to manage the product, as we still need to use command line. IBM launched the Operations Center (OC), but there are still functions lacking, especially since we cannot manage all our scheduled tasks by using the GUI.""I would like to see more technical training online. Sometimes, it is a little bit difficult to find, or that I do not really know what I am looking for as somebody who is starting off finding their learning curve.""RTO is a huge gap for us. If we had a disaster scenario and had to recover a bunch of stuff from tape, the RTO would be too long for us.""Perhaps if they could add replication to a second site or third site from the same console, that would be helpful. Currently, we have to connect to another console.""I want to see better compression than what it currently does.""We cannot take VMware backups for our banking data center environment.""Their support is lacking. I've talked to their developers and stuff in the last couple of weeks and they reassure me that some people have retired, and they're working on getting that bumped back up. But the support lacks a lot to be desired at this point."

"There's a lot that can be made better. For example, it could be more scalable.""I would like to see the real-time replication process improved, and a zero RPO feature added.""In terms of improvement, the UI, especially in the recovery section, is unclear about which repository it uses.""It could be a little more customizable.""The ability to run just differentials without pulling the full on your archive.""It seems like Unitrends moved away from enterprise customer engagement and moved more towards the managed service provider market.""If the interface could be less complex, it is would be great.""Probably the biggest issue I've had is actually paying for the unit, and part of that problem is that they use a third party for the billing."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Technical support is pretty good. It is doing fine, but you pay for it."
  • "Licensing can be either complicated or simple depending on what type of licensing you wish to use and what works best for your environment."
  • "At scale, the consumption license (per TB) is very expensive."
  • "Use capacity licensing. It's easier and cheaper."
  • "We worked our licensing into a capacity model, which is nice. Now, everything is much simpler to manage from a licensing perspective."
  • "We chose IBM Spectrum Protect, because they actually have something called MSP pricing, which means managed services provider pricing. The pricing was attractive, and it seems to be a platform that IBM is totally investing on in terms of new functions and new capabilities."
  • "Spectrum Protect is not expensive, and it is simple to use."
  • "It is very scalable, but the downside is that it costs money."

  • "Make sure you do the homework to size the solution properly. Buy the Enterprise Plus licensing if you can afford it."
  • "When you purchase initially, get into the program which gives replacement hardware for free when you renew your support agreement."
  • "Initial pricing is competitive. Renewal pricing is steep, so make sure to project costs for the lifetime of the appliance(s)."
  • "Talk with the sales guys. They can work with you on the best package."
  • "We found that the cost of Unitrends was about the same as the Dell DR6300. We liked the fact that the Unitrends appliance was all-in-one."
  • "The cost of Unitrends definitely draws you in. The licensing is all included in the appliance, which is a great incentive."
  • "Pricing model constantly changes."
  • "You should be aware how much the monthly costs are to use, what the initial costs for hardware are, and what the options to expand are, if needed."
