We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
They have a virtualization feature and, even if you do not want to buy that feature, you can have it as a trial for two to three months. If you have another brand of storage from another company, you can use this tool to transfer all your data from the old system to the new Storwize system, which really shortens the migration time.High availability and enhanced security; Proven dependability; Data compression with hardware acceleration; Advanced copy services features are all in this product. The GUI is very easy and performance is also good.Virtualization of external storage, while adding cache and speed to the external storage.Ability to manage third-party arrays and virtualise them: One screen to control multiple arrays. Simplified administration.User friendly management interface.

It's very fast. We were seeing read latencies of less than one millisecond. It is robust.

Cons
I have looked at a few pages of a report I download and I saw a graph there regarding software-defined vendors. IBM is not in a good position on this graph. I know that they are working very hard on this, to make it much better and to get to a level where it's not only hardware but also software to provide a complete solution.GUI interface should be enhanced more as there is some issues in copy services.Replication features need improvement. Currently, they are there in the product, but I'm not sure as to how it works exactly.Events/log analysis tools. One area for improvement is in the GUI, where host clusters are not properly dealt with. With Hypervisor host clusters, all hosts must see the same volumes in the same order. Using the concept of a “host-group” has been around (even with IBM) for many years, so why not with the V7000?Product support is restricted to IBM only. It must be decentralized to IBM partners as well.

It's somewhat scalable, but maybe not so much as some of the competition.

Pricing and Cost Advice
The pricing has been very competitive for the last few years. IBM got to the point where they changed the pricing model and we feel very comfortable with the pricing. It's very competitive. Over the last two years, IBM has been coming up with all kinds of interesting promos, especially for the SMB systems. That makes it very competitive price-wise and in terms of performance...IBM V7000 has a new license and price structure which provides intuitive licensing based on the functions customers wish to enable and use the most.Regarding licensing make sure you add at least three years software maintenance from IBM at the beginning, because you will not be able to download firmware updates or any fixes/patches without this.It pays to go back and get the best price you can from your supplier. The first offer is not always at the best discount.
