We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Icinga has multiple automation and integration features. There is an API for everything and a web UI for configurations. The APIs enable you to automate tasks in Icinga. We can also use plugins to talk to the API. The Icinga Director talks to a database in the background, and you can import settings from the CMDB to all systems in Icinga.""This solution has a self-healing handler where if the service is down, it is automatically restarted.""Macros and the ability to connect it to Google Maps are valuable features.""The apply rules feature saves a lot of time.""The value of Icinga is that it has hundreds of plugins, so it's really easy to monitor pretty much anything.""The drafts are easy but what I like about Icinga is that there are many add-ons that you can download.""The best thing about the solution is how it highlights errors, the issues, and what needs my attention. The solution directs me to areas that I should look for first.""It is really easy in Icinga to create your own plugin and integrate it without any fuss. And it works just perfectly fine."

"Identifying the problem statement is easy.""AppInsight for SQL: Enables us to see the relevant error log entries on the same page as performance parameters.""Extremely user friendly: Any IT professional can learn how to admin NPM in a short time.""The most valuable feature is the Access Rights Manager.""The more valuable feature of this solution is the Exchange feature.""It is simple to implement and can provide fairly decent Windows-based monitoring, beyond simple SNMP. It is great for monitoring newbies and smaller shops.""Management Console - Managing service to each server enrolled in the Solarwinds is much easier. Using a web base console, you can control your service much convenient way. There is no need to login remotely. It save a lot of time and effort.""One of the most valuable features are the reports. They're pretty good. Also, the ease of installation and customization for the client is another feature that we value. SolarWinds has a lot of features but these are the ones I like the most. We also like that the KPIs have the ability to be preset."

Cons
"Icinga’s automation could be improved.""In general, the product does not look good. However, it does what it is supposed to do. So, the improvements should focus on usability and UI.""It needs Trap SNMP. I saw the documentation for Zabbix, that it has its own built-in product which handles SNMP traps, and there's nothing similar in Icinga or Nagios. I think this feature is most important for me.""We have found some problems with Nagios, and support isn't very responsive.""At this time, the layout of the website is a bit difficult. It should be more user-friendly for changing the background and logos.""The user interface should be improved.""I think the software is quite good, but we have had problems with getting it to recognize certain areas and amend certain checks, where we needed so we would have to create backend scripts for those checks. Though, being open source, it has the support to create backend scripts, it would be better to have these scripts in-built.""One of the areas that are frustrating is remote monitoring for more than one machine."

More Icinga Cons →

"SolarWinds Server and Application Monitor could improve by having a cloud version. They have an observability platform but it still needs to be maintained by us.""A lot of times, we have to do a lot of manual cleanups.""The setup was complex. We had local support to assist us.""The stability, flexibility, and ease of use could be improved.""Downside of the tools is the web console are hung or crash. It need to improve the performance.""In terms of the dashboards on offer, they should work to improve them. The types of dashboards that you get in terms of the graphs on offer aren't ideal right now.""The current script monitoring feature has limitations, especially when dealing with custom scripts.""SAM's software-defined network monitoring capability is also low and could be improved."

  • "The solution is cheap."
  • More Icinga Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "I have always said SolarWinds is very “proud” of their products, meaning they are expensive. I cannot afford to purchase all the licenses I need for all the SolarWinds products."
  • "When planning for the number of licenses to purchase, make sure you understand all of the elements within an application required to really understand performance well. In our case, we quickly came to the conclusion that an unlimited license for SAM was the way to go."
  • "Nagios XI, WhatsUpGold, Uptime Software, PRTG, Manage Engine, and SpiceWorks are the other tools that have lower pricing and licensing costs. However, they can't compete with SolarWinds when it comes to the features and functionality that SolarWinds can provide."
  • "I would advise potential buyers to wait until the end of the quarter, end of year, or other time to place orders. There are actually great deals to be had at those times if your budget cycle can match up."
  • "Pricing and licensing is fair for what you get. It does have a great bang-for-the-buck appeal."
  • "SAM is not per server so the pricing model can be deceiving. If you have an enterprise environment, you will quickly exceed your licensing quickly. You should know this before going in."
  • "Understanding the counts of objects to monitor will determine the licensing need. In terms of pricing, it’s not cheap but it’s not expensive as larger vendors whose products don’t have all the features or integrations."
  • "The product might cost you $30,000 USD to buy, but scaling this solution requires the purchase of additional polling engines at $20,000 USD each."
