We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable feature is disaster recovery, where we have the ability to boot up VMs quickly in a disaster.""For this particular client, the solution’s Critical Server Insurance feature that protects physical and virtual servers including Windows, Linux, VMware, and Hyper-V, was a very big factor as well. They have a bunch of physical servers, as well as virtual. The mix is predominantly virtual. They also have some NAS boxes that we back up using Infrascale.""The most valuable feature is the ability to boot locally, as well as in Infrascale's cloud. This means that we can either do on-site failover or failover to their cloud.""The Infrascale Dashboard is very easy to understand, has a good overview, and gives me access to all my appliances without having to have a local VPN connection to the individual clients. It makes it very easy to find my way around.""The most valuable feature of this solution is that it is simple to use.""Its Critical Server Insurance feature for protecting physical and virtual servers, including Windows, Linux, VMware, and Hyper-V is mandatory for me and it makes me happy. If I had a backup solution that didn't do that, it would not be a backup solution and would not be any good.""Given that we are in the hurricane belt, the spin-up of replicated servers in the cloud is among the most valuable features. If our site goes down we can just connect to the cloud appliance, spin up the servers, and we are good to go.""The recovery of data is the most valuable feature. The software backup, which is just a program that gets installed on a server, can back up to the cloud. You can install that on a server or PC, and that will simply back up a user's files and folders. If it is installed on the server, we just back up the relevant data. Recovering that, if there has been a malicious attack on a business or anything like that, has been invaluable in the past. The good features about that are obviously, if the physical hardware has a problem, then we can utilize the appliance, turn on the virtual machine, and carry on running the business while we put the hardware back and correct the issue."

"It is easy to use, and you can run it with all kinds of client software environments. It works well with the most popular software, file systems, and operating systems. It is very useful to us.""The most valuable feature is flexibility.""Veritas NetBackup has significantly streamlined our backup and recovery processes by providing a single pane of view across various environments.""Veritas NetBackup Automatic Image Replication and CloudCatalyst features allow me to replicate deduped backup images from one site to a remote site, as well as duplicating deduped images to the Cloud (i.e. AWS S3, etc.)""The tool's information transfer and patching up is easy. The solution offers protection from ransomware which is also a valuable feature.""The solution offers very good storage efficiency, so there's excellent compression and deduplication within the product that our clients really appreciate.""I can rely on this product if I need a restore.""The most valuable feature of Veritas NetBackup is the protection policies or protection module."

Cons
"There is room for improvement by making the interface a little more intuitive when navigating to recover flat files or an old server.""The only thing I would suggest, and I have talked to my manager about it already, is that they should have a direct backup-to-cloud solution. It should be something that does not require me to do an image backup, and then individual file and folder backups, to be able to restore individual files.""One of the significant drawbacks of it is due to the fact that we're using two devices to manage the same vCenter, or virtualization environment, and they don't talk to each other. That means I can't easily see what VMs are already being protected. If I'm on Infrascale device "A" and I have protected these VMs, when I go over to device "B," I can't see that those VMs are already covered.""I would like to be able to limit the bandwidth in cases, for example, where we are uploading the backup.""There could be some room for improvement in the on-premises hardware selection. It is hard for them to deploy a lot of different hardware options. Depending on footprint size and overall capabilities, that is where there could be some flexibility in some cases. However, it is not a deal-breaker.""I would like to see more features for the section on the viruses and maybe another in reference to two-factor authentication.""Having options to replicate between their data centers, once the data is offsite, would be an improvement that they could make.""They can always make the GUI a little bit nicer, the interface level a bit better. There's always room for improvement."

More Infrascale Backup & Disaster Recovery Cons →

"Main area that could be improved is the pricing, to make it more competitive""Technical support is somewhat slow and is in need of improvement.""The solution is quite expensive.""I also think they could improve the reporting. They use a web-based software application OpsCenter for the reporting and I see that they haven't made any changes in years.""Veritas NetBackup is an expensive solution, and its pricing could be improved.""In the next release, I would like to have a better way to protect against ransomware attacks and a better way of logging issues where you don't have to enable the verbose logging to capture the problems.""The flip side about NetBackup is that it is not policy-based.""Netbackup can backup MySQL via Oracle policy, to be honest, this is not completely native support and this method has a few limitations. In fact, you can buy from Veritas (or Zmanda) clients for MySQL or PostgerSQL from Zmanda to backup MySQL or PostgreSQL on Linux."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Our licensing fees are billed every four months."
  • "You get unlimited clients and buy a bucket of space. In addition to the standard fees there were setup fees."
  • "The licensing is based on how much data you have plus what appliances you need."
  • "The pricing is fair, and they are interested in working with MSPs as part of their market."
  • "The appliances have different prices because of storage, size, and memory. For example, the older machines support more virtual machines, whereas the new one only supports one virtual machine. As we have purchased the later appliances, they have probably been a little bit more expensive because they have to be good enough to keep the business running if the physical server goes down. We learned our lesson from the one that went down when we tried to run products and it wasn't quick enough."
  • "It is super competitive. It is worth taking a look at it from a licensing and pricing perspective."
  • "Pricing of the product could be improved. It definitely makes it a harder sell. They will usually end up getting close to the price we need, but I have to go through everybody to get the price reduced. Their list pricing is significantly higher than that of other solutions."
  • "Infrascale's pricing, to me, was outstanding and was one of the major factors in my decision to go with Infrascale... My customer had a different solution before and his monthly payment was three times as much as the payment he now has with Infrascale."

  • "Licensing was very expensive and did not scale well if needed to move between license models."
  • "Smaller virtualized environments will want to stick to a traditional licensing model if possible. It will likely be cheaper, but it is a pain to manage all the individual licenses for each client."
  • "So far I can only say that the license structure could be looked at to be aligned as either capacity-based or traditional."
  • "If you have a complex environment with dozens of different servers and apps, I recommend you look for TB licensing."
  • "The software and license are very expensive."
  • "Pricing is pretty costly as compared to the other products but worth investing for the long term and high ROI."
  • "Acceptable if you need to implement it for larger environments, e.g. over 1000 clients. For smaller setups it might be too expensive."
  • "The licensing model is cost-prohibitive as you scale out."

    Reviews from Real Users

Mahdi B., Solution Architect and IT Consultant at Merdasco - Rayan Merdas Data Processing, says, “Veritas integrates well with the cloud, all databases, all operating systems, all hardware, and all software. Veritas also has solid malware and ransomware protection features. From time to time, we face a new kind of attack, and Veritas has always proven to be the best protection solution for some of my customers. Our customers who have faced ransomware attacks were able to recover their data in less than one day without any stress. Veritas is ransomware resilient and because of its implementation, it is not dependent on the operating system to work. Most of the functions of the Veritas software are isolated from the operating system and it's not dependent on the operating systems involved. This is very important. When some of our operating systems are infected by a virus, Veritas still works perfectly and protects our data. This feature is very well implemented in Veritas NetBackup.”

A PeerSpot user who is a General Manager at a comms service provider relates, “Veritas enterprise has many agents who perform the backup, whether it is a consistent backup or recorded backup. The solution has everything from the snapshot to the multiple database agents.”

Mir-Ali, Infrastructure Manager - Oracle SCM at a financial services firm, shares, “It covers all kinds of different architectures. Plus, it's very user-friendly and it is very reliable. Reliability is the most important thing because once the backup is done, if it is successful, then we're sure that it was successful and we will be able to restore it.”
