We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"We like team collaboration and cross-functional collaboration.""It's a very complete product overall.""Jira is easy to use and there are a lot of tools that are integrated with it.""Its visual display and ease of use are most valuable.""The integration between Confluence and Jira, along with Jira's ticketing system, is a valuable feature the product offers its users.""It was very easy to learn Jira. As a scrum master, I run daily stand-ups, and they are run directly from Jira. The feature that I really love in Jira is called Issue Navigator. It allows me to customize how I want to show the user stories within Jira to my squad.""The layout, workflow, automation, and metrics are helpful in Jira.""The level of stability is quite good."

"Overall, they have a very strong workflow management capability. That's a very strong feature because then you can model any process easily. Whether it is a demand management process, a pipeline management process, or your project delivery methodology, it is much easier because of their workflow management capability.""It is very important that the platform gives us a single place where we can measure progress toward goals, as we have weekly meetings with the CTO. We present these consolidated overviews and dashboards to him so that he has an overview of all the projects and can see the status of all the problems that we have and we are working on.""The portfolio management and the resource management are the key features.""Has a powerful workflow engine that allows creation of workflow complexities and processes.""I like the automated calculations, especially on the resource side. When project managers enter their resource requirements into their staffing profiles, they are automatically translated into labor forecast calculations. PPM automates a significant portion of the forecast calculations. Timesheets are also built-in. We automatically process time sheets and bill them accordingly.""There are so many different pieces of functionality, and we use almost every single piece from deployment to demand, project, resource, and time management.""Resource management: The resource management module is very complete and covers most of the time all needs of customers.""Recent Program Management lifecycle, Program Management aggregation views due to interactive UI (selection of risks, issues, and changes in Program Overview) and “flash look & feel" of this functional chunk, which is different in comparison to other parts of HPE PPM."

Cons
"End-to-end management from product backlog to test completion could be improved.""I'd like some more features around software testing. I'd like to see some more stuff done around data testing. That's what I'm most interested in.""Atlassian has multiple tools and it becomes difficult for a customer to process everything differently. Atlassian should combine them and form a single solution for DevOps by including the Jira Confluence, Bitbucket, Bamboo, and others. This would be much easier for customers by purchasing a package, rather than purchasing bits and pieces. With Azure DevOps and other companies, it becomes easier to go with one company having multiple areas that they can cater to, but in Atlassian, the problem is that you have to select different solutions to have a full package. For example, to have document management customers have to purchase Confluence and for Git repository management they have to purchase Bitbucket, et cetera. There is always another add-on that you need to attach to have a complete solution in Jira.""Users can be confused about how to use this tool as it's very complex.""Something I would like to see improved is the traceability feature. When you have a user story, if you can see all the test cases, it would be an improvement if you could see any design documents or any change management.""Jira is a little bit old fashioned, it could be more user friendly.""Tracking is important but the built-in features don't meet our needs.""We would like to see integration between Tempo and Jira."

More Jira Cons →

"We constantly put in requests for some of the things we need. One of those is being able to export just our standard request type to PDF.""Currently, HPE PPM does not allow “Project” approval, but only simple “Demand Request” approval (mobility).""I was not involved in the initial setup. I know that the project involved a lot of consulting that took a long time.""They can make its UI better. Currently, the UI is a bit clunky.""Sometimes features in PPM don't work as expected, or our users request a new feature. Typically, our partner vendor can deploy those changes. But there have been a few instances when we had to raise it with Micro Focus because it's beyond the ability of our partner vendor. When we raise the issue with Micro Focus, it sometimes takes time because it needs support from other customers using PPM, not just our bank. It goes through a voting system. Other customers need to vote for the feature. The features that get the most votes will possibly be added.""There are some limitations when it comes to attaching receipts. For example, if we are going to buy some non-labor-related assets such as hardware, we are not able to attach the receipts in the Financial Management module in version 9.41.""I would also like to see improvement in PPM's reporting and alerts. PPM has reporting capabilities, including HTML reports and portlets. But a majority of clients will build their own reporting platforms, or they will use external reporting platforms like Tableau and QlikView.""Portfolio scenarios: This is a very powerful feature. However, it’s limited to analyses."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It is very cheap if you forego the local instance and stick to the cloud."
  • "The licensing model is annoying. They nickel and dime you."
  • "It does not cost that much."
  • "Almost everybody uses JIRA nowadays because it is the most cost-effective solution."
  • "I understand JIRA is quite expensive."
  • "We feel that the product is a good value for the cost."
  • "Licensing is on a monthly basis, and it is based on what you use."
  • "To try this solution, use their cloud offering to get familiar. After that, it's in my view worth the money."
  • More Jira Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Support and license management are two hurdles for us. Every time we purchase new licenses, it has taken us half a year to implement those."
  • "It is SaaS without a base fee."
  • "HPE PPM SaaS model is comprehensive, however, the base fee component has customer resistance to its recurring setup,"
  • "Now, we also received an increase in the support license prices, without any advanced notice. At this point, switching to unify all our licensing under HPE and customer support has been poor."
  • "We have an annual license, and it is fairly priced in comparison to that of other solutions."
  • "A large organization will find Micro Focus PPM affordable, but it may be a bit costly for a small or medium-sized company. The license is based on the number of users."

    Overview

Jira is a powerful cloud- and subscription-based application lifecycle and issue management solution. It is designed to aid users both in project management and in resolving any issues that arise at any point in the software development process. It is especially concerned with easing the ability of developers to collaborate.

    Jira Benefits

Some of the ways that organizations can benefit by choosing to deploy Jira include:

    • DevOps lifecycle visibility and planning. Jira provides application developers with tools that enable them to track and visualize where they are in the development process. This means that a DevOps team can measure their progress at all times. Jira’s roadmapping feature also enables a DevOps team to work more efficiently by setting goals for their projects, keeping them on track. Additionally, they are able to track whether they are meeting the goals that they set for their projects.
    • Regular product updates. Atlassian is constantly updating Jira so that it is continuously evolving into an ever more powerful and user-friendly solution. Users can be sure that the product that they are using is always being tweaked so as to provide them with the best possible project management solution.
    • Flexibility. Jira enables users to customize their workflows and dashboard so that the solution is operating in a way that best matches their needs. Jira can also integrate with more than 3,000 other applications and integrations. Organizations can use it to expand their project management and DevOps capabilities in many different ways.

    Jira Features

    • Security capabilities. Jira is equipped with a number of useful security features. It gives administrators the ability to restrict access to certain tools so that only users who are authorized to complete certain tasks have access to the tools related to the completion of that task. Users can also set default permissions so that only particular users can work on new projects or particular projects.
    • Real-time notification feature. Users can set Jira so that it offers them notifications that contain critical information in real time. It can send users email notifications when pressing issues have been updated. They can also set it to notify them about tasks that may be due, or other similar events.

    • Activity log. Jira has the ability to track any and all changes that are taking place within the software framework. Users can keep a close eye on everything that is going on. This promotes a high level of visibility and can be leveraged to aid developers in their collaboration efforts.

    Reviews from Real Users

Jira is a powerful solution that stands out when compared to many of its competitors. Two major advantages it offers are its workflow engine and its highly customizable dashboard.

Bharath R., the tool implementation and project management lead at a financial services firm, writes, “I feel the strongest feature of Jira is its workflow engine. It empowers us to automate our workflows within our organization. It's the one characteristic of Jira which I think can help any organization, be it in any domain.”

Uday J., a staff engineer at a computer company, says, “Another thing that I like a lot about Jira is that in the dashboard, you can plug the modules that you want. You can enable certain sections. For example, you can show trend history, open Jira tickets, etc. Some of the managers have created a dashboard for each engineer.”

OpenText Project and Portfolio Management (PPM) combines workflows and data to align investments with strategy. Top-down and bottom-up analytics power this strategic portfolio and project management tool.
