Quotes From Members Comparing Juniper SRX vs Sophos UTM

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
It integrates well with Fortinet and Palo Alto.It uses many applications, like antivirus blocking and web filtering. The high availability of the application is good.It protects the data behind our switches. It helps us perform our daily jobs.We mostly use the Layer 4 firewall functions: Access rules, NAT, and site-to-site IPsec VPN.Juniper has the "recovery safety feature", so if you perform a "commit confirmed" and the new configuration disconnects you. then there is no "confirmed" command with X mins (default = 10 mins). It automatically reverts (recovers) to the previous configuration. This is handy for when you do not want to make that trip down range just to reboot a router.Using a Juniper CLI, you configure a "candidate configuration", then "commit" it to bring it live. If you do not like it or messed up something, you just "rollback" to the previous configuration. It can all be done in a matter of minutes. This is super handy once you get use to it.

It improved bandwidth utilization and provided link load balancing features for internet and intranet lease lines. It now controls all the security aspects of our web servers with Sophos UTM WAF.We use Sophos UTM as our main firewall with all its features included. Mainly, it controls all of our network perimeter security: firewall, IDS/IPS, and web application firewall (including VoIP).The initial configuration is straightforward thanks to the web GUI. In 30 minutes, you can have a running firewall with UTM protection enabled.Brings greater visibility into the network traffic coming inside and passing away from the company. They are all good, but most-used are Network Protection and Web Filtering.Scaling out cannot be easier, as there are many migration paths.Advanced protection (Sophos Sandstorm) - Protects against crypto viruses in real-time.

Cons
Juniper needs to focus more on their perimeter firewalls. The GUI needs to be easier to handle.I would like to see endpoint control and endpoint testing security.I would like them to add a dashboard because it's difficult to operate. The product only has basic features. It needs better interoperability with Cisco gear.Third-party support for Juniper is a lot less than Cisco. This is no surprise, but a definite consideration if you are expecting to use a lot of third party support. In my guesstimate, for every 100 Cisco shops, you will find one Juniper shop.JTAC (Juniper Networks Technical Assistance Center) is just okay for technical assistance. However, if you are used to Cisco TAC responsiveness, you will need to adjust your expectations with Juniper Networks TAC.

Initially, there were issues with the wireless network as wireless access points were disappearing from the dashboard after some time.Reporting: We have had to work manually in many of our reports.Needs to improve the certificate management (ex. Let's Encrypt support).VPN needs IKEv2, but it’s in the roadmap. Also, all new, cool features will only come to the new Sophos XG Firewall. There is still room for improvement in wireless protection. I don't mean their WiFi device is bad, but there are still things to improve on, such as WiFi roaming. This product could use some improvement with web filtering. It takes a lot of time and effort to set up and maintain.Finding information about Sophos’ sizing guidelines can actually be difficult. Also, Sophos does not make it clear what they mean by “users” when you are sizing a firewall, which then leads to undersized implementations.I am going to flat out say technical support is terrible. Being a Platinum level customer, I am not happy with the support.

Pricing and Cost Advice
It has a low price. It is not that expensive.Pricing is good. Most of the costs are in the UTM (IDS/IPS, virus scanning, etc) subscription.Palo Alto was nice, but much more expensive. We were able to lower our overall operating costs over a three year period by 25%, mostly recovered from maintenance/support costs.Small enterprises or telco have variant licenses, and this licensing should be improved.I would say about $20,000 for a SRX650 with IDP licence.Pricing is very good, not expensive.

We purchased the appliance with five years onsite support and licenses.Pricing for the upgrade was very competitive as Sophos wanted to retain existing customers. In the case of a software/virtual appliance subscription, you pay by protecting user/IP addresses. You can do this to as much hardware resources as you like. The pricing for Sophos UTM is quite acceptable compared to other UTM vendors. If you would like to run an active-passive HA system, you only need to buy an additional hardware without subscription. At other vendors, you need subscription for both devices. For under 50 users, MSP licensing is profitable.Sometimes more is less, meaning if you want more than three features, take the FullGuard licence.Sophos offers free training when selling their products from within the partner portal.
