We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"This is a quality product with ok support, and it is better than the competition we've tried.""The solution is stable.""I'm pretty happy with its reliability. It is also very scalable.""The simplicity of the product is great. It's very easy to use, which is a compliment we get all the time in terms of feedback.""FortiGate is flexible and easy to use.""It has improved our security capabilities.""The CLI is robust and powerful, enabling rapid, consistent changes via SSH.""The management console is pretty simple, so anyone who understands networking can initially deploy the solution."

"It's much faster to deploy a power source. If you need to deploy a firewall in the cloud of software, it's much easier and much faster than deploying the office firewall in a rush.""The solution has good features.""The technical support has been good.""The most valuable features are application filtering, content filtering, the intrusion prevention system (IPS), and definitely the application firewall.""The features we found most valuable are using the IDS and IPS during protection. The application filtering feature is great.""The dashboard, customization, API, and pricing are good.""There are a few valuable features that offer very good quality on the solution. Especially NetScreen. We used to use NetScreen for the the product line. It was a very mature solution, very robust, easy to configure, easy to manage, etc. It made it easy to do everything.""It is easy for me to go in and update settings, make changes, or add/remove rules or security."

"The most valuable feature of Sophos UTM is the endpoint protection feature.""It now controls all the security aspects of our web servers with Sophos UTM WAF.""It has allowed us to design a bespoke cloud space for our clients, while still having an excellent level of protection.""It has made our organization more secure, because we are using a VPN. We are not accessing services directly. It allows us to segregate some of the traffic for individuals which may be more of a developer role rather than an operational role needing access to developer resources, but not necessarily production operational resources.""Sophos UTM is the simplest of these products to setup.""The features that I've known to be most valuable are both the web security features as well as the web firewall capabilities. As a partner of Sophos firewall, we have some clients and they are using Sophos firewall UTM and we are using it as well.""The initial setup is pretty straightforward.""The initial setup is pretty easy."

Cons
"The solution could be more evenly structured.""Fortinet FortiGate could improve by adding enhancements to FortiMail, FortiSOAR, and FortiDeceptor.""Fortinet FortiGate is a stable solution. However, my issue is the performance only. When I use all the profiles, this affects the performance. From the beginning, I should have had a better sizing of the box.""It would be ideal if they had some sort of GUI interface for troubleshooting and diagnostics.""When we cluster the two Fortinet FortiGate boxes together we have some issues.""Fortinet FortiGate could improve by having better visibility. Palo Alto has better visibility.""I would like to see better pricing in the next release, as well as a simplification of the installation.""In terms of what could be improved, the SD-WAN is quite difficult, because if you install the new box, 15 is okay, but if you change from an old configuration, if there is already configuration and a policy when you change to SD-WAN, you must change the whole policy that you see in the interface."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"VPN access is an area that needs improvement.""The solution could improve its technical support.""It could use more tutorials.""The security feature must be improved.""Right now, we are going through issues and problems where the product gets dropped with the connection or during the authentication initial phase. While it could be our problem, we would like to see more stability in this area.""It is pretty complex to manage and could be easier.""I've talked to people that say Juniper now, as a device, can be a solution for a data center, but in the past, I have not seen this as being possible.""I would like to see an activity sensor for malicious content or sensor for viruses and malware."

More Juniper vSRX Cons →

"It is a pretty straightforward setup, but it should be some sort of documentation that takes you step-by-step to help set it up for your VPC.""Sophos should improve its ability to check something like bandwidth consumption for users or something more real-time.""The product could be simplified and made more self-explanatory.""The scalability of the product is an area with certain shortcomings where improvements are required.""The UI can be cumbersome and, sometimes, features are not where you think they should be.""It is a little too CPU resource intensive, so we would like to see improvements there.""Sophos UTM could be simplified, and they can improve on the many other features, like SD-WAN and load balancing. Sophos UTM is missing a few features that their competitors have. For example, if you have multiple branches you would like to connect, the load balancing features aren't available on multilink. If we create a VPM for multiple LAN links, we cannot load balance the traffic.""Sophos UTM could improve the way the configuration has to be done. I have to do the configuration through the command line interface but if it could be done through the graphical user interface it would be much better."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
  • "These boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive. Fortinet licensing is straightforward and less confusing compared to Cisco."
  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."

  • "Our experience purchasing the solution through the AWS Marketplace was good."
  • "We like pricing through the AWS Marketplace."
  • "It is not that costly."
  • "After some research, I think that the cost of Juniper is more than Check Point, Palo Alto, and Fortinet."
  • "As a customer, the pricing is good for us."
  • "The pricing is reasonable."
  • "The ongoing licensing cost seems to be pretty standard. There are no additional costs."
  • "The solution could have been cheaper."

  • "The licensing model is very straightforward, it's a bit pricey, but for what you get, it's well worth it."
  • "If you can afford it, go for a small Check Point, as it is easier to manage."
  • "Unless you are in the United States, or you have to use Sophos, you can't contact Sophos directly. You have to use a third-party company, and they all have different ways of how they explain their licensing."
  • "Go to a vendor and let them assess your needs so you can get a right-sized device."
  • "Sophos offers free training when selling their products from within the partner portal."
  • "I would recommend to follow Sophos’ sizing guidelines for choosing which license and model to use. Sophos has their own way of going about this and supplies partners with all the information required. If you follow their documentation and guidelines, there should be zero questions about licensing and sizing."
  • "For under 50 users, MSP licensing is profitable."
  • "In the case of a software/virtual appliance subscription, you pay by protecting user/IP addresses. You can do this to as much hardware resources as you like."

I have used both Sophos and Fortinet products in production and I have found the Sophos UTM appliances (hardware and virtual) to be a better fit most of the time -- with a few caveats which I will touch on below. In both instances, the transition from TMG will be mostly straightforward. The main hang-ups will be with the VIP/load balancing and SSL. For some reason that completely escapes me, both of these vendors make getting valid certificates onto their boxes unnecessarily difficult -- the Fortinet appliances more so than the Sophos UTM appliances. At one point a Fortinet engineer had to write an entire manual on how to get an SSL certificate uploaded successfully on the 4.x firmware Sophos: The one feature that is missing (and this makes some amount of sense) from the Sophos appliance is BITS caching for updates. Other than that, Sophos offers a full replacement for TMG on UTM9. The XG platform also offers a replacement for the TMG; however, some of the rumblings about upcoming releases suggests that Sophos is going to give XG the Apple iOS treatment and "streamline" the interface...potentially cutting out/hiding some functionality. On the effectiveness of the NGFW, Sophos is mostly good but has a few issues blocking all pieces of an application. For instance, we had to build custom blocking rules for OpenVPN (the vpn was being used to bypass the content filter) because the default Application Control wasn't effectively blocking the application. Reviews from Real Users

Below are some reviews and helpful feedback written by PeerSpot users currently using the Sophos UTM solution.

PeerSpot user Dana B., Network Administrator at a manufacturing company, says “The web and email filtering are the two biggest and most valuable aspects of the solution for us. The solution overall has just been a good, cost-effective solution for us. The solution offers a lot of functionality. The solution scales well. We've found the technical support to be helpful. The stability and performance are quite good.”

A Technical Director at a security firm mentions, "Sophos SG UTM had all the basic functionality that you needed. It is user-friendly and easy to manage for any integrator."

Marek M., Senior Network Engineer at a computer software company, comments, “Sophos UTM is the simplest of these products to set up. If you follow the instructions using the wizard, which is just a few steps, then you will have a firewall to protect you and your customer.”

A Software Sales Manager at a tech services company explains, “The overall visibility of the console is what I find most valuable, plus it's very user-friendly. It can be integrated with other solutions such as SOAR, SIEM, etc., even when you have an existing firewall. I really like that the console can be integrated. You'll see everything on the same window, and the single window feature of the machine is so good. These are the features I really like.”

James D., IT Manager at Manual Workers Union, states, “The fact that it's on the cloud means we don't have to administer it on our network or deal with a physical machine, which saves us money. The solution has many great features. From the console, we can start different scannings on different machines. We enjoy the centralized reporting part of it. The initial setup is simple. We enjoy its general stability. The solution can scale. So far, the solution has been problem-free.”
