We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"There is an option to back up a specific folder from a specific source, not the whole virtual machine.""Its ease of use and price are most valuable. It is simple and straightforward. Someone who has never used any backup software will easily understand it from the first installation. It is that simple. Price-wise, it is much cheaper than its counterparts.""Quick backup and restore; very simple and understandable interface.""Moving to cloud backups eliminated the need for clients to change USB drives or worry about drives being stored offsite.""If we do a backup of a machine at some point and the server crashes, then we can restore this machine to a different server with the same settings and setup. We will just have to tweak one or two things, like the IP. Then, it is ready to go.""It backs up our virtual machines with the CBT, Changed Block Tracking.""The most important features are the backup and the availability of the Universal Explorer. The in-transit compression is great.""The compression, encryption and deduplication features are fabulous and great stuff."

Cons
"I have not been impressed by the data compression of the backup images. They seem to take up nearly as much space on the backup drive as they do on the server.""Vembu BDR currently supports backups of O365, although it does not currently have an email archiving function to the O365 backups.""The API uses a common data image to store the data for the sets, but unfortunately, it's limited to consecutive sets only. That's the only limitation I have observed so far.""The support is a bit slow in resolving an issue. It takes a long time to recover.""Scheduling backups is challenging due to the poor quality of the UI.""There's a feature that does syncing with AWS Cloud backup online. It's not that straightforward to get it set up.""They said they can support Red Hat Virtualization and we assumed that they support any compatible system but we found we need to do a network backup or a network image, which is not what it said on their website. I have had many discussions with them about where this component is. Initially, I was searching for a component which would back up Red Hat Virtualization. They said they support this in the same way they support Hyper-V and VMware. I haven't found the feature in their portal or in any of their software. They haven't made a special agent for it, in the way they did for Hyper-V.""The product is co-branded, not white-labeled."

"We backup a lot of information in a 24-hour period. It works fine. But there's always room for improvement on that."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The product's pricing is a good value. Vembu is cost-effective versus using VMware Essentials. Regarding licensing, make sure you find the right workstation or server that you're going to install it on, and know the number of sockets it has, since the price depends on that."
  • "It is very cost efficient, effective. I’d say it's one-third the cost of Veritas when compared to the server backups. I even tried image backups on Acronis, but Acronis is very expensive. So these are some of the key reasons why I opted for it."
  • "We were able to take advantage of a promotional pricing campaign."
  • "The pricing structure is in line with other solutions. However, the option to replicate offsite to a unit at another office or at home is a big cost benefit. Instead of paying monthly for cloud storage, you replicate offsite for free."
  • "Pricing is fair enough. What was not clear enough in the documentation on the website was that that you're licensing per CPU socket and you are only licensing on the restore sockets, not the backup sockets. It's a bit technical, but it was very well explained during the demonstration that we had during the evaluation period."
  • "I prefer the way Vembu is licensed. When you look at Veeam or any other product, they price per node. Vembu is licensed per host. You just buy a host license and it backs up unlimited VMs within that host. The others charge per VM."
  • "Vembu is too expensive because they don't really have small-business pricing. This is a matter of personal opinion. They're going to tell you that they have competitive pricing because there are more expensive solutions in the marketplace, but there are better solutions in the marketplace that are more expensive. Their product is a better fit for small businesses, but they don't price it that way."
  • "The product's pricing is of good value. It was much more affordable than the alternative solution to it, which was Veeam. That would be the closest competitor, and between those two, Vembu was much more affordable. It seemed reasonable for what we needed to do."
