We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"I have found the most valuable feature is application performance management.""The product has a great dashboard.""The reporting of the solution is very good.""Some of the most valuable features of SolarWinds are the topology discovery and network performance analysis.""The sum solution, NTA, and DPA.""Technical support is always live and they're supportive."

"The most valuable features are the packet trace flow and that the view of the whole environment is deep.""The most valuable feature for us is that insight into what our network is really doing - it's a fairly complex network. Not having to go through thousands of lines of network configuration to find firewall ports that were open or closed, for various ports, was very valuable. It went out and found everything we need very quickly.""I like being able to see the flows coming in and out of the product. In terms of monitoring network flows, we use it to verify whether or not different servers/applications should be communicating with each other.""As a troubleshooting tool, it's a level-3 troubleshooting-skills tool and it's very easy to use and very easy to find the information that you need.""The graphical interface of this environment is so good with all the views, the graphics, and everything in them. It's really easy for me. It doesn't need an engineer to work on it. It's easy enough that anyone can get into the environment and look for issues or look at how communication is going on across the VMs. It's pretty much straightforward.""We haven't had any complaints about the stability of the solution or heard of any issues. None of our clients have mentioned running into bugs or glitches. There haven't been crashes.""It has really tightened down the security. That was something that we were lacking. It has also given us deep visibility into our network. We can really get down and see all of the traffic within the data center, between the VMs, between the applications, database servers, other application servers, web servers. We can identify everything that is communicating, and we can see it all on one product.""The best feature of this application is its ability to capture everything within the same application, as well as capture all the traffic."

Cons
"AppOptics would benefit from having a much more centralized view.""The integration with Unix services should be a bit more straightforward.""In terms of the technology, I think they need to put some more advanced troubleshooting into SolarWinds, in terms of AI capabilities. That's the next generation, especially in the cases of APIs which have already adopted AI capabilities into their products.""The implementation needs improvement. It needs to get modernized with the newer cloud scenario in both public and private deployment models.""I would like to see more integration with other tools that are available on the market.""The solution should be more user-friendly."

More SolarWinds AppOptics Cons →

"The product is slightly complex use, while still being user-friendly. It could use more training modules, as it is not a straightforward product.""I would like to see more reporting features, more dashboards.""The UI, even though once you get to know it, it's easier, still it's hard to figure out by yourself. You have to go read, watch videos. It has a lot of data on it. So that is an issue.""The compatibility with each and every component of the infrastructure is the main thing that I am looking for. I would like them to make sure that it's compatible with different kinds of storage systems, etc. I have seen the compatibility list. I feel it can be more compatible than it is right now.""There is room for improvement when it comes to pricing because we pay here in Brazil, and all the costs are based on the dollar.""The only issue we have is that the solution does not always capture the host names.""The IT infrastructure industry is expected to evolve towards a hybrid cloud model in the next five to ten years. In this model, most of the customer's resources reside on-premise within a private cloud setup, such as VMware. Another segment operates within public cloud environments like Azure and AWS, and a portion remains in traditional data centers. There should be seamless interoperability between public and private clouds. AWS and VMware need to work together to make it possible. Whether users interact with on-premise infrastructure or configure resources in the public cloud, the user experience must be seamless.""If it had some kind of plugins with vSphere, more effective plugins with Horizon View or other VMWare products, if it had interconnectivity, I think it would be more effective than it is today."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Mostly, it's a perpetual license. We don't have any customers using the subscription right now—it's mostly a perpetual license that the customers purchase. The licensing is based on the number of elements, whereas other solutions are node-based."
  • "I believe the current licensing cost is reasonable."
  • "Since it's a negotiable rate, I would rate the pricing as a five out of five."

  • "The solution has helped us to reduce time, increase performance, reduce costs, and even easily manage networks. We are probably seeing 10 to 20 percent labor savings because we are able to be very specific and focused on what we want to do. It ends up saving the customer money and makes us be more efficient on our cost deliveries."
  • "It reduces costs. It takes something that may be challenging and makes it more usable and visual by being able to bring in tools, seeing what their impact is, such as microsegmentation and application rationalization, and seeing it quickly."
  • "Cost always has room for improvement, you could always make it cheaper. But I think it's a good value for what you pay for it."
  • "It's an expensive product because we have a lot of nodes."
  • "They should include the product in NSX because it's important to have it for deployment."
  • "The solution has reduced the time that we spend on other products. For example, with NSX, we were able to quickly find things that we would normally spend days trying to figure out."
  • "We have spent less time investigating network flows, so it is absolutely cost-effective."
  • "It has brought more money into our company."
