Executive Summary
Updated on Jul 4, 2023

We performed a comparison between Moodle and SAP SuccessFactors based on our users’ reviews in five categories. After reading all of the collected data, you can find our conclusion below.

  • Features: Moodle offers flexibility, customization options, course backups, and integration with Zoom and Teams. SAP Litmos has been praised for its user-friendly interface, customizable dashboard, robust course library, and powerful scheduling system. Users say that Moodle could enhance its interface, mobile app, reporting, and social media integration. SAP Litmos needs more flexibility to create custom rules and improvements to its dashboards and reporting.

  • Service and Support: Some users found Moodle support helpful, while others believe there is room for improvement. SAP Litmos likewise received mixed feedback regarding its support.

  • Ease of Deployment: The setup process for Moodle can be complex and may require technical skills and knowledge of databases and PHP. SAP Litmos has a user-friendly and straightforward setup that is suitable for mid-sized organizations. Although customization may require technical knowledge, the platform is generally easy to navigate and does not require much maintenance.

  • Pricing: Moodle's cost may vary depending on the partner and certification status. It's an open-source product without any recurring fees, but customers may need to spend additional money on customization and integration. SAP Litmos offers various pricing plans with additional charges for specific features.

  • ROI: Moodle saves time and money by reducing the need for multiple individuals in tests and quizzes. SAP Litmos improves onboarding speed through self-registration and completion of induction beforehand, but SAP Litmos users found it difficult to quantify an ROI.

Comparison Results: Our users generally prefer Moodle over SAP Litmos. It offers greater flexibility and customization options, allowing users to create various activities and materials. Moodle has a wide range of features, including course backups and integration with other tools like Zoom and Teams. Users find Moodle to be user-friendly and accessible. Its modular design makes it easy to expand with plugins. While SAP Litmos is also praised for its ease of use, Moodle's extensive features and adaptability make it the preferred choice.

Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Content Author removes the need for a third-party solution for content creation.""Its pricing is good, and its performance is good when it works.""This is a very scalable solution. We had over 10,000 students in our instance and their billing model makes scaling affordable to do.""This complete product is highly scalable. Licensing is not based on number of total users on the system but rather only on active users. Litmos only charge for the number of users engaged in training. This is what makes this solution ideal for scale.""From a learning management system admin perspective, it has a user-friendly interface, but the functionality is deep. So, you can automate people in and out of courses. It lowers the general admin of an LMS admin so that I can focus more on value-adding things for the organization I'm working with.""Its user interface is quite good. The platform is quite user-friendly. The UI/UX of the platform is very advanced, which helps in getting the users interested in the training.""There is a couple of good features available, you can customize the dashboard, CSA, and home page. You can customize the solution to your business standards. SAP Litmos offers a library of 2,500 plus courses to premium members. They have a good library of pre-built courses. It's a variety of soft skill courses including management, and marketing. You can offer these courses to your students, which is excellent.""It's very easy to design content and create training models within the app, so you don't always have to use a third-party tool to develop your e-learning."

"The product's most valuable feature is the ability to import and export documents for courses, assessments, and questionnaires in any format.""The most valuable feature of Moodle is the exam question shuffle. Students in the classroom will all have different question list numbers. For example, one student's question one will be another student's question ten.""It is relatively easy to use to build processes for establishing and conducting work within the templates that are used. It is not that hard to follow along or use, and it is pretty simple to pick it up and run with it.""The most valuable features of Moodle are the ability to create assignments, divide them into teams, and the course delivery. In Cornerstone, I need to reach out to the team, and it is not as simple, a little more involved. Additionally, the solutions is easy to manage.""Almost all the activity modules are available inside the courses, so that makes our training easier and more comfortable.""What I liked most about Moodle was that I could create nice online quizzes. It takes very little time to do. You don't have to even read the paper, it automatically evaluates the quizzes. It gives the student grades and provides a lot of useful statistics. For example, it indicates which question was the hardest, easiest, and where students made the most mistakes. Everything is available to you. You couldn't do this in regular paper test hard copies. This was my first use case.""The most valuable feature is the community. Moodle is a completely open source application and provides a lot of development knowledge. The other features we find valuable are the LTI tools, integrations and BigBlueButton.""The best thing about Moodle is that it is open source and has many useful plugins. It is a great solution for an organization that needs modifications and customization."

Cons
"The reporting function of SAP Litmos needs major improvements. The reports are not at par with other solutions on the market. It's not user-friendly or effective reporting which we can retrieve from other places.""The rules are not very flexible in terms of administration. They have a predefined system with three standard rules that cannot be customized, modified, added, or removed.""One feature that a few of my clients have been requesting is CPD. We should be able to capture CPD points for users within the system to be able to report on those.""The dashboards for this solution could be improved as they are not of the same standard and detail as those seen in Power BI. The graphics for the reporting could also be improved.""They can really improve in the reporting area. While doing sessions, there are various types of reports, such as the attendance report or assessment report. We can export the Excel dump of the report, but it is not that neat and clean. You have to change it a lot. You can customize the Excel dump as per your requirement, but it is not that user-friendly in terms of the admin part. They can do much better. They have room for improvement in the reporting area.""The solution lags in defined security parameters with only three predefined roles available.""Lacks a variety of language options.""You cannot make a course optional, so if I assign a course to someone, the system assumes that they have to complete it."

More Litmos Cons →

"It would be a benefit if there was an easy single sign-on with social media services for Moodle. There are some plugins that I tried, but they didn't work seamlessly. it is a work in progress. Having the single sign-on with social media services would be appreciated because in my school we are using Google suite and the main reason why we use Google Classroom is that it is integrated seamlessly with the suite.""The solution could be improved if support was an integral part of the whole solution. There are a few challenges in terms of performance due to Moodle being a free-to-use platform but these can be overcome with the use of their support team.""They need to have a better way to illustrate competencies so that, when people go through the programs, they can actually show they are competent in the subject matter.""For a first time user, especially someone who is non-technical, Moodle is difficult for them to understand and they often need assistance.""The ability to input modified, individual, independent grades in a grade center component is not just hard. It almost always requires you to get tech involved. When you're dealing with a learning system where you have people in an open enrollment with all different levels of learning modes or methodologies, and as well as a worldwide student body, you end up with situations where you have to absolutely exempt somebody from a grade or an assignment and enter a new, different kind of assignment because of their skillset or lack thereof. You can't do that in Moodle. It is virtually impossible to do that in Moodle without having a tech do it for you, and when you have to have that level of tech support, it becomes problematic. They need to fix the grade book center. It is the part where you do evaluations. They need to fix it so that the individual professors can make changes directly without having to get a hold of tech support to do it for them.""Its interface design could be more user-friendly.""Moodle Mobile is a really good area for improvement. All of 4.0 hasn't been released yet, and Moodle Mobile is not yet available for all different devices.""Moodle should improve the interface. You can download plugins, such as templates, and use them in Moodle, but they're limited. The interface component in Moodle can improve for students because we always have to train every student on how to use some of each feature. The solution overall could be more user-friendly."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It is priced per user license."
  • "There are three different pricing models. One is only to use the platform and to add your own learning material. The second plan includes the learning management system plus 2000 plus pre built courses on different areas including leadership, software skills, HR and IT related training. The third package allows you to integrate the system with tools such Salesforce or other CRMs."
  • "I do not have any idea about the licensing, but I know that it is quite expensive."
  • "If I have a domain and I want to link my custom domain to SAP Litmos, and if I want to remove the branding of the SAP Litmos, then they charge a large amount for it. It's not included in your subscription plan which we have purchased from them. In the last two to three years, we have never bought the custom domain. We have never linked our custom domain to SAP Litmos. The barrier for us is the high pricing. It is not a reasonable price."
  • "When we first purchased our subscription, we underestimated how many people we would have within a billing period. We had to adjust that in the first six months. I can't remember the exact numbers, but they charge a per user rate for a certain number, and you get a discount as the number of users goes up. It scales, which is a fairly reasonable way to build a pricing model."
  • "This solution comes at a high price point. We also paid $4500 for a migration specialist from Litmos to assist in moving our content over. You are billed every month based on the number of users who have logged in and completed training."
  • "The pricing is really good. Its pricing is probably the most competitive I've seen for an LMS. If you need help with doing any type of custom design or customization, such as code design or anything like that with the site, then you have to use their people services, which would be an extra cost."
  • "The solution is priced per user which can get expensive."

  • "It varies depending on the partner you're going with. It depends on whether they are a certified partner or not. It also varies depending on the demand. Usually, with Moodle and other LMSs, there is concurrent licensing. It's hard to figure out the best way to do it at the company that is selling the LMS. Moodle is usually one of the most cost-effective LMSs you can get."
  • "This solution offers a free-to-use version which can be deployed only on-premises and is what we are using. Moodle also offer support based and cloud based subscriptions. Organizations can select the appropriate package based on their needs. Moodle offer reasonable pricing for the use of their solution."
  • "Moodle offer a 14 day free trial and then requires payment."
  • "It is a one-time registration with the Moodle site. There isn't a yearly or monthly fee."
  • "Moodle is free. It should probably stay free. There isn't really any support for Moodle unless you pay an astronomical amount, which is weird."
  • "Moodle have a very robust licensing system that is user friendly. It's not very expensive."
  • "Moodle is a free solution."
  • "It is open source, and it has a lot of free documentation. It can be by far the least expensive option, but it depends on how one decides to use it. It can be free if you download it and host it on-prem, and you don't count your time as being worth anything. So, it can be almost free, or it can be very expensive just depending on if you get a package with a provider and if it is a huge solution."
