We use this solution to examine disparate log sources and provide a cohesive method to search for anomalous behavior.
The feature that makes it usable is the web interface.
The ability to investigate a particular period of time where you can analyze logs is its most valuable feature.
It has centralized monitoring for our security operations. Therefore, it improves our analysts' work.
The most valuable features would be the automation, reporting, and the support.
The Web Console is my favorite. It enables me, at a glance, to see the health of the environments.
Even other products we have that feed into it, instead of having to watch all of them we only have to watch one. For example, we have CrowdStrike, so instead of having to pay attention that solution - because their dashboard doesn't really pop when an alarm comes up - we can see issues with the red on the LogRhythm alarm. That is very nice.
We take in around 750 million logs a day. We have a lot of products and that would be a lot of different panes of glass that we would have to look through otherwise. By centralizing, we can triage and take steps much more quickly than if we tried to man that many interfaces that come with the products.
The feature that I have found most valuable is their analytics platform where they have the open security data-link, which they introduced. This is typically different from the other vendors.
The most valuable feature is being able to look at users' behavioral profiles to see what they typically access. One of the key events that we monitor is people's downloading of objects... It's very easy to see people's patterns, what they typically do.
[The solution has] incident-management or case-management functionality. If someone were to download a high number and we decided we needed to investigate it, I could open a case right in the tool. It would be able to directly reference the data that they downloaded and we could open and shut the case directly in the tool, as well as report from it.
One of the most valuable features it has is the thread chaining. One of the common issues that we always had was the number of anomalies that we used to get and the number of alerts that we used to get. But with this approach of thread chaining, we've found the false-positive rate has decreased very significantly. That was something that we never could have achieved before.
When we were looking for products for our security monitoring needs, our biggest requirement was that we wanted something based on machine-learning and analytics. If you go with rules, it can raise a lot of noise. Securonix, with its UEBA capability, had the best analytics use-cases.
The machine-learning algorithms are the most valuable feature because they're able to identify the 'needle in the haystack.'
The feature that is most valuable is the fact that it's an open platform, so it allows us to modify policies and tune policies as needed. There's also a feature called Data Insights which allows us to create different dashboards on specific things of interest for us.
What I like most is that the threat models and risk scoring are very accurate and very helpful to the analysts on my team. They help highlight the most important things for them to look at.
I would like to see support added for Exchange 2016, and CheckPoint OPSec Lea.
It is a product that is very hard to use.
I would like to see more integration with more products that are out there within the same security field.
Stability has probably been one area where Health Checks have not been great with the product. We have been told that they are going to improve Health Checks on product, though we do struggle with them on a daily basis.
Scalability misses the mark sometimes, especially when you have an integrated disaster recovery built into the solution.
My biggest issue - I know that they say they're doing it - is that the API-building is extremely important. They keep saying it's coming, it's coming. It's not coming fast enough. I don't care if they need to double their team size to get it out there quicker, the world is already in the cloud and we can't monitor it. That's a big problem for us. My boss keeps coming to me about it. That's an issue.
My biggest complaint is documentation. Everyone tells me, "We have documentation on the Community site." I have searched for different types of documentation on numerous occasions, and it might be there, but it's not easily findable.
My big thing is the easability. I don't like to go to two different systems. The fat client that you have to install to configure it, then the web console which is just for reporting and analysis. These features need to collapse, and it needs to be in a single solution. Going through the web solution in the future is the way to do it, because right now, it is a bit cumbersome.
The pricing. I'm not sure how they are proceeding with the identity based pricing compared with DB pricing which most of the vendors are using today.
We have a lot of users who, because they're engineers and they're bringing down product data - where, at times, a top-level product could be 10,000 or 15,000 objects - it's difficult for us to determine what should be a concern and what shouldn't be a concern. We work with the Securonix folks to try to come up with better ways to identify that.
One of the things they can improve on a little bit is the usability side, to make some things simpler... The tool does have a lot of knobs, you can turn a lot of things on and off and you can change things. Sometimes, it can become a little overwhelming. They should remove some confirmation options and make it simpler for the less mature customers and people who are still trying to grasp it.
We have compliance needs. We have investigation needs. And we have situations where an analyst needs to look at threats. These three things require a different view of how they look at the threats. What would be good is to have Securonix create three different views of their Security Command Center so that, depending on the persona of the person logging in, they'd get the relevant data they need and not see everything.
There is room for improvement in the product's integration with ServiceNow and in the reporting features.
Securonix implements risk scores based on different policies that are triggered. We've seen some challenges with the risk scores and how they trigger. These are things that Securonix has recognized and they've been working with us to help improve things.
A helpful feature would be an event export. A way to create more substantial summary reports would be nice.
Other than issues with the training, there have been issues with the encryption. There have also been issues with some of the reporting, minor glitches that they have fixed as they've gone along.
Pricing and Cost Advice
Everything is expensive with LogRhythm, and you don't get anything for free.
When it comes time to renew, they say, "This is what you are using. This is what we can do for you." So, they work with you on pricing.
We have seen a measurable decrease in the mean time to detect and respond to threats. As it comes out new features and new releases, the window is becoming a lot narrower because you can pivot a lot more with the data. Therefore, the new features and enhancements are reducing that.
The nice thing about LogRhythm is you can either use the agents, getting a certain number of agents with your license depending on how you want to go, and those agents do a lot of cool things, or you can use CIS Log host, then you have like an unlimited number of them.
The solution has provided us with consistency and increased staff productivity through orchestrated automated work flows by at least 20 percent.
I have seen a measurable decrease in the mean time to detect and respond to threats. We went from not detecting them to detecting them. We can actually pick up what is anomalous in our network now.
In comparison to the competition, they are more affordable. This allows us to do more with less.
We went in on a three-year agreement which has an annual licensing fee, based upon the number of people that we're monitoring. There have not been any additional costs to the standard licensing fees.
We have a license from our 5.0, so that license just continued. We paid them the extra cloud-hosting costs for a year which were about $300,000.
A good thing about Securonix is that they don't charge by volume of data or number of devices... They charge by the number of employees, which is a much more predictable number for me, versus data. Our costs are in the $100,000 range over a three-year subscription.
We have an annual license. We pay $200,000 for the base licensing and we pay another $50,000 for the software as a service.
