We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"I haven't experienced any crashes while using the solution...Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten.""The most valuable feature of Data Protector is its integration with VMware. A lot of software these days integrates with VMware, and you can run some of these things on virtual machines. You can even have your backup manager running on a virtual machine and use physical managers to move data around. Their VMware integration isn't too bad, but Commvault has that feature, and many other backup products do.""This solution is quite stable because we have only three users.""The most valuable feature is the capability to back up our SQL server.""Micro Focus Data Protector's most valuable feature is its interaction with the fiber share. It is easy to use, we use it to back up without any problem to VTLs, and can use the Fiber Channel that is still the TCP.""If you have an idea of what you are doing, it's very flexible and very stable.""The solution is easy to use.""The most valuable features of this solution were the features we worked most with which were telemetry, and the scheduler."

"The most valuable feature is application availability, which allows us to monitor all agents and accounts.""A full-featured option for managing virtual machines with an instant recovery feature.""The solution is meeting all of our client's requirements. It has good performance.""It's powerful and user-friendly.""It is good and easy to use for backing up physical servers. It is working fine, and it is stable and scalable.""Technical support is good.""Veeam helps to create a stable environment with virtual servers.""The most valuable features are backup and restore. This solution is also easy to use."

Cons
"In general, you can say that Micro Focus Data Protector is behind in capabilities when compared with other backup solutions, such as Commvault, Symantec, NetBackup, but it is very strong for certain use cases such as array integration. We are using it in production even now. There should be some kind of cloud integration and archiving solutions. I think this is the area they need to focus on.""The graphical interface needs to be improved.""The technical support was very slow.""It has a lot of undeveloped functions like window searching and patent searching, and within the main backup processes like VMware and Microsoft Exchange. It's completely not user-friendly, and it has no built-in antivirus software. In my opinion, Micro Focus Data Protector is not an enterprise level solution.""The downside of the flexibility on offer is if you over-configure it, it may fail to function as some configurations may not match.""It's very expensive compared to Veeam and other similar solutions.""The scheduler setup could be better. We are facing some issues scheduling the job based on our requirements.""The GUI could be updated. The GUI hasn't changed since version 6. It's on version 10 now. The reporting could also be better. Also, while Data Protector is excellent for backing up physical hardware, it needs more features for backing up VM images because many environments use hypervisor."

More OpenText Data Protector Cons →

"I can't think of anything that may be missing.""Interface could possibly be improved.""With the currency exchange, the solution ends up being quite expensive.""The solution could use some updates to minor details omitted from current reporting.""The backups can go slow.""The compression ratio and application ratio could still be improved in this solution. Reporting could also be improved, for better monitoring.""There isn't really anything I would like to improve. Maybe the solution could be more secure.""A feature I would like to see is universal restore. At the moment, restoration can only be smooth on the same hardware. Let's say you have a server and you back it up with Veeam Agent, in case it fails or crashes. If you later buy a new server because the same one isn't available on the market anymore, there's a high chance that Windows will not boot up if you restore from the Veeam backup because the hardware is now different. Acronis has the universal restore feature, so it will work with generic drivers and you can restore Windows in any dissimilar hardware. As far as I know, Veeam doesn't have this feature yet."

  • "Avoid using many LTO drives; when using fewer drives, the price will be extremely good."

  • "The licensing cost was not annual. We didn't pay any license. We paid when we deployed and we didn't pay for anything after that. There were no additional fees after the initial payment."

  • "The solution requires paying for a license."
