Quotes From Members Comparing MicroStrategy vs Microsoft BI

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
Other people can access data much more easily than before. Its usability is the main advantage, people in the company are using it.With Power BI, you're able to store your data within spreadsheets and SharePoints, and then have Power BI pull the data out and report on it. So we actually saved a ton of money not needing to load the data into databases, which is a big prerequisite for many other reporting tools. It is very well integrated with other Microsoft products, including PowerApps and Excel, as well as Access, so it fits well into our workflow.Key features are its dashboard functionality and ease of integration with various data sources. The DAX coding language is good for creating formulae.Easy to use. End-users can make changes to the graphics. In the early stage of an implementation, it not only helps decision making, but it allows people to have insight into problems with data so that they can go and get it corrected.Allows business users with a mission to solve their own problems, without an IT person.

Cube performance and easy integration with third-party tools/products, are valuable features.Mobile brings reports/dashboards closer to the business user.Provides seamless integration between browser-based BI and Mobile BI.Speed for high level aggregation by using Intelligent Cubes.Semi-automatic support of implementing date dimensions, including delta to prior year implementation. The platform can be easily monitored. You have quite a good overview of tasks which are being run.The mobile for MicroStrategy is the best of all the BI platforms. As a separate product for the mobile device, MicroStrategy is the entire BI platform. It is an enterprise solution, a separate unit, etc. It's a stand-alone mobile development app that you don't even have to do business intelligence on. You can just use it to build apps.

Cons
It is definitely a wonderful analytics tool. However, database ETL, data integration functionality would be absolutely perfect in many cases. Currently, it doesn't get the job done and we need to extract, transform, and load the data from faulty data sets into something more suitable for the deployment of the analytics tool.I am a SAP user and I would like this tool to have more connectors - and to more easily connect to - the ERP or SAP environment.I would prefer that the solution not be shared. I'm concerned that if we make a mistake we could reveal information to people who shouldn't see it. I would like to have my own on-prem server, to buy my own server and have my own infrastructure for Microsoft BI, with only with my data. One thing I would like to have is the scripting language, as they already have within Excel. It's already within a Microsoft business product, because Excel is the number one business product out there. So it would be nice to have the scripting capability in order to automate certain processes.Drill-down in dashboards needs to improved. The capability only works in Power BI Desktop today. We need to have an alternative approach today. The data source definition is all over the place. It needs a wizard that covers all its options. It needs an AI which can choose the appropriate connection strings and provide options for connections.

Data writeback, and on-the-fly predictive analysis results from R and Python could be improved. With Cube partition (v10.1 and above) scalability has not been an issue, but the Cube publish time, and temporary space consumption while the Cube is being published, has almost doubled during implementation of Cube partition. The product is designed for enterprise. A lightweight version would be easier for a smaller workgroup.Consolidate the functional offering to be more concise in the front-end for web reports, dashboards, and self-service.Currently, the client view looks completely different depending on what you are building.I did not see any additional value of providing one button for installation on the whole platform if it was going to be installed for different servers. You would have to make customization every time. There was no additional value in an installer. We would really like to see MicroStrategy have some support teams based more in Europe, because for now it seems that there is one person for the whole CE region. That is not exactly what we would like to see. We do know that MicroStrategy supports most places, either in the US or India, but those are different time zones, people, and cultures. The interface you can design in MicroStrategy is great, but I feel it needs to be refreshed, add a bit more functionality. I would like to see more capabilities on the mobile side, to bring it on par with apps that you see in the App Store.

Pricing and Cost Advice
The Report Server is pretty expensive on-premise. But as long companies are happy to use the cloud version, that's very cost effective.Pricing, that's where Microsoft beats Tableau. It is priced much cheaper.Remove the cost of a licence to show a dashboard within SharePoint. Why should readers of a dashboard have to pay to view? Make it low in cost. It is a no-brainer!Globally, we evaluated a number of products, including Salesforce's product, Microsoft won on the ground of simple functionally and cost.Paid for itself in the first month.I would advise that Microsoft BI products are rightly priced and the licensing is easy to follow and to fulfill. All in all, for the price, this is an excellent tool for helping your organization turn mounds of data into useful insights.

It would be nice if there was a sticker price that says, "This software costs this amount of money." But I think that's just indicative of all software vendors. A lot of people are in it to make money, commissions, so it's just the nature of the business. But I would like to see more transparency, more equality, on pricing. Some people get better deals than others, I think. The solution is scalable. A little expensive perhaps, but it is scalable. There have been actual direct bottomline impacts in terms of extra revenue created from the reporting solutions. They need to work on their license structure. They are not competitive against somebody like SAP BusinessObjects. We had a quote that was almost a third the price, coming from SAP BusinessObjects, and it's not a better platform. It's not cheaper. They do concurrent user licensing, while MicroStrategy does named user licensing, and that was literally the only difference. But it made a $500,000 difference. They've got to do something to make themselves more competitive. Maybe it's assessing your business users and what you really expect them to use, and maybe giving a reduced price on that. But they are already giving us a 60% discount and they were still a million or so above, over a three-year time period. That doesn't account for synergies as we get from on-site resources that are already available, but I thought that that was a big, big deficit for them. They gave us a good deal.We actually researched some of the other solutions. For options, price, and customer acceptance, this product has worked well for us.The price was good. We have had great support along the way. While initial cost of MicroStrategy is still on the higher side, the long-term benefits brings down overall cost of ownership significantly as compared to other tools like Tableau/Cognos.
