Quotes From Members Comparing Microsoft BI vs SAP BusinessObjects

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
Other people can access data much more easily than before. Its usability is the main advantage, people in the company are using it.With Power BI, you're able to store your data within spreadsheets and SharePoints, and then have Power BI pull the data out and report on it. So we actually saved a ton of money not needing to load the data into databases, which is a big prerequisite for many other reporting tools. It is very well integrated with other Microsoft products, including PowerApps and Excel, as well as Access, so it fits well into our workflow.Key features are its dashboard functionality and ease of integration with various data sources. The DAX coding language is good for creating formulae.Easy to use. End-users can make changes to the graphics. In the early stage of an implementation, it not only helps decision making, but it allows people to have insight into problems with data so that they can go and get it corrected.Allows business users with a mission to solve their own problems, without an IT person.

It can process big volumes of data fast.Through the use of Business Intelligence reporting and scheduling features, reports are generated and automatically sent according to a schedule. This has freed up countless hours spent performing the same tasks, month over month.Enables us to present data with Smart Objects that can be embedded within presentations and which automatically update when the presentations are run.Reporting from SAP Business Objects Web Intelligence is amazing, and gives users the ability to quickly access data from existing universes and/or relevant data sources, without the need to involve a functional business analyst or financial analyst.Provides autonomy for all the business users to develop their own reports. The report development tool called SAP Web Intelligence under the BI Launch Pad portal has been the most valuable feature. It is a very good product, stable, and has good technical capabilities. It allows the analysis of business data and enables decisions based on the analysis.

Cons
It is definitely a wonderful analytics tool. However, database ETL, data integration functionality would be absolutely perfect in many cases. Currently, it doesn't get the job done and we need to extract, transform, and load the data from faulty data sets into something more suitable for the deployment of the analytics tool.I am a SAP user and I would like this tool to have more connectors - and to more easily connect to - the ERP or SAP environment.I would prefer that the solution not be shared. I'm concerned that if we make a mistake we could reveal information to people who shouldn't see it. I would like to have my own on-prem server, to buy my own server and have my own infrastructure for Microsoft BI, with only with my data. One thing I would like to have is the scripting language, as they already have within Excel. It's already within a Microsoft business product, because Excel is the number one business product out there. So it would be nice to have the scripting capability in order to automate certain processes.Drill-down in dashboards needs to improved. The capability only works in Power BI Desktop today. We need to have an alternative approach today. The data source definition is all over the place. It needs a wizard that covers all its options. It needs an AI which can choose the appropriate connection strings and provide options for connections.

The admin features for disk space management need work. It's very difficult to manage the disk space by the application; good admin features and not included to allow you to do that. I don't believe that is in the latest version of the product either.Currently, we can use Explore to do data discovering, but cannot generate charts. The biggest area for improvement would be the dashboarding capabilities due to the recent change from Xcelsius to Dashboard Designer. This has created a gigantic ripple in many companies because the skill sets required are drastically different. This product could be improved with Cloud Integrations and Predictive Analytics functions integration.More thorough testing of Service Packs before release. The calculation engine requires some improvement. There is still a lot to be done on the mobile side to make Web Intelligence truly seamless between the desktop and mobile versions and I would like to see SAP pay a lot more attention to this.I would like to see their data visualization products enhanced and made more robust and easier to implement.

Pricing and Cost Advice
The Report Server is pretty expensive on-premise. But as long companies are happy to use the cloud version, that's very cost effective.Pricing, that's where Microsoft beats Tableau. It is priced much cheaper.Remove the cost of a licence to show a dashboard within SharePoint. Why should readers of a dashboard have to pay to view? Make it low in cost. It is a no-brainer!Globally, we evaluated a number of products, including Salesforce's product, Microsoft won on the ground of simple functionally and cost.Paid for itself in the first month.I would advise that Microsoft BI products are rightly priced and the licensing is easy to follow and to fulfill. All in all, for the price, this is an excellent tool for helping your organization turn mounds of data into useful insights.

Depending on your size, try to stick with SAP BusinessObjects BI Edge. Most people tend to overthink the licensing. Remember that one concurrent user means that one person can be performing a task at a given time. That does not mean that only one user can be on the system at a time, it means that only one person can be refreshing a report or designing a dashboard. There are tons of ways you can access your data or reports without consuming a license. I've seen cases where five concurrent licenses support thousands of users. There's no additional charge for a Development environment license, so build an additional development server. It is not an expensive platform. The licensing is for a package of users starting at 10 users. It has an option of a Cloud Platform (SAP Analytics Cloud) which has a lower price than the on-premise platform, and you can buy individual licences per user.Just work with SAP to make sure you have enough licenses but don't go overboard.
