Quotes From Members Comparing Microsoft BI vs. SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
Tech support is very helpful. My primary use is for view of the dashboard. It ingegrates nicely with Office 365.It is a powerful tool that helps our data analysis processes. It's user-friendly and provides data abstracting capabilities. We are also able to share reports with our colleagues very easily. There is a lot of help and documentation on the Internet, so no special training is needed to use the source code. They should add mobile access. Its data visualization provides the user the ability to quickly look at data and focus on relevant information, allowing them to make an immediate decision.

It gives you a lot of flexibility in designing your dashboards. We use it to identify critical KPIs to senior management. It has been extremely valuable, to combine data from various data sources. It can process big volumes of data fast.Through the use of Business Intelligence reporting and scheduling features, reports are generated and automatically sent according to a schedule. This has freed up countless hours spent performing the same tasks, month over month.Enables us to present data with Smart Objects that can be embedded within presentations and which automatically update when the presentations are run.Reporting from SAP Business Objects Web Intelligence is amazing, and gives users the ability to quickly access data from existing universes and/or relevant data sources, without the need to involve a functional business analyst or financial analyst.Provides autonomy for all the business users to develop their own reports.

Cons
We did have some issues building the Microsoft blog.Powerpoints are not available in the report server. The report server feature is quite limited. It would be nice to use other connectors to link with the data. The DAX features need some improvement. It's not as easy as Excel. They need more DAX formulas. The reporting part of Microsoft BI is rather limited compared to other reporting tools. It should be easier to use when there are multiple system sources. The look is simple, and could be a little more professional.

The combination of Lumira along with Design Studio merger last year still needs development from a visualization standpoint.SAP BusinessObjects is actually losing popularity within our company because people find the user interface and the way things are set up not to be as easy as many other tools that are on the market, like Qlik and things like that. The admin features for disk space management need work. It's very difficult to manage the disk space by the application; good admin features and not included to allow you to do that. I don't believe that is in the latest version of the product either.Currently, we can use Explore to do data discovering, but cannot generate charts. The biggest area for improvement would be the dashboarding capabilities due to the recent change from Xcelsius to Dashboard Designer. This has created a gigantic ripple in many companies because the skill sets required are drastically different. This product could be improved with Cloud Integrations and Predictive Analytics functions integration.More thorough testing of Service Packs before release. The calculation engine requires some improvement.

Pricing and Cost Advice
No comment on pricing. It is a cheap solution for our needs. No comment. It is free.It is part of our Office 365 license. The costs are small and the benefits are high. The Report Server is pretty expensive on-premise. But as long companies are happy to use the cloud version, that's very cost effective.Pricing, that's where Microsoft beats Tableau. It is priced much cheaper.

Depending on your size, try to stick with SAP BusinessObjects BI Edge. Most people tend to overthink the licensing. Remember that one concurrent user means that one person can be performing a task at a given time. That does not mean that only one user can be on the system at a time, it means that only one person can be refreshing a report or designing a dashboard. There are tons of ways you can access your data or reports without consuming a license. I've seen cases where five concurrent licenses support thousands of users. There's no additional charge for a Development environment license, so build an additional development server. It is not an expensive platform. The licensing is for a package of users starting at 10 users. It has an option of a Cloud Platform (SAP Analytics Cloud) which has a lower price than the on-premise platform, and you can buy individual licences per user.Just work with SAP to make sure you have enough licenses but don't go overboard.
