Quotes From Members Comparing MicroStrategy vs SAP BusinessObjects

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
Using the "cards" which function as preconfigured reports or views. I use many of them simultaneously on an organized page, with filters that allow me to see high-level information as well as subsets across the dataset, in a few clicks. Many Excel-challenged users love to use this product for its simplicity.

It scales well. It used to have only a max of four I-servers, but I think recently, somewhere in version 10, they doubled that, so you can have eight I-servers now.Cube performance and easy integration with third-party tools/products, are valuable features.Mobile brings reports/dashboards closer to the business user.Provides seamless integration between browser-based BI and Mobile BI.Speed for high level aggregation by using Intelligent Cubes.Semi-automatic support of implementing date dimensions, including delta to prior year implementation. The platform can be easily monitored. You have quite a good overview of tasks which are being run.The mobile for MicroStrategy is the best of all the BI platforms. As a separate product for the mobile device, MicroStrategy is the entire BI platform. It is an enterprise solution, a separate unit, etc.

It can process big volumes of data fast.Through the use of Business Intelligence reporting and scheduling features, reports are generated and automatically sent according to a schedule. This has freed up countless hours spent performing the same tasks, month over month.Enables us to present data with Smart Objects that can be embedded within presentations and which automatically update when the presentations are run.Reporting from SAP Business Objects Web Intelligence is amazing, and gives users the ability to quickly access data from existing universes and/or relevant data sources, without the need to involve a functional business analyst or financial analyst.Provides autonomy for all the business users to develop their own reports. The report development tool called SAP Web Intelligence under the BI Launch Pad portal has been the most valuable feature. It is a very good product, stable, and has good technical capabilities. It allows the analysis of business data and enables decisions based on the analysis.

Cons
The preconfigured apps need to be more relevant to allow one, out of the box, to load data in order to use pre-set reports/views.

I don't think that they will, but I'd like to see parallel processing, scalable parallel processing.Data writeback, and on-the-fly predictive analysis results from R and Python could be improved. With Cube partition (v10.1 and above) scalability has not been an issue, but the Cube publish time, and temporary space consumption while the Cube is being published, has almost doubled during implementation of Cube partition. The product is designed for enterprise. A lightweight version would be easier for a smaller workgroup.Consolidate the functional offering to be more concise in the front-end for web reports, dashboards, and self-service.Currently, the client view looks completely different depending on what you are building.I did not see any additional value of providing one button for installation on the whole platform if it was going to be installed for different servers. You would have to make customization every time. There was no additional value in an installer. We would really like to see MicroStrategy have some support teams based more in Europe, because for now it seems that there is one person for the whole CE region. That is not exactly what we would like to see. We do know that MicroStrategy supports most places, either in the US or India, but those are different time zones, people, and cultures.

The admin features for disk space management need work. It's very difficult to manage the disk space by the application; good admin features and not included to allow you to do that. I don't believe that is in the latest version of the product either.Currently, we can use Explore to do data discovering, but cannot generate charts. The biggest area for improvement would be the dashboarding capabilities due to the recent change from Xcelsius to Dashboard Designer. This has created a gigantic ripple in many companies because the skill sets required are drastically different. This product could be improved with Cloud Integrations and Predictive Analytics functions integration.More thorough testing of Service Packs before release. The calculation engine requires some improvement. There is still a lot to be done on the mobile side to make Web Intelligence truly seamless between the desktop and mobile versions and I would like to see SAP pay a lot more attention to this.I would like to see their data visualization products enhanced and made more robust and easier to implement.

Pricing and Cost Advice
I believe that the investment in Domo was worthwhile because it allowed for the organization to jump in quickly, with little training. There are different plans available based on the requirements.

It would be nice if there was a sticker price that says, "This software costs this amount of money." But I think that's just indicative of all software vendors. A lot of people are in it to make money, commissions, so it's just the nature of the business. But I would like to see more transparency, more equality, on pricing. Some people get better deals than others, I think. The solution is scalable. A little expensive perhaps, but it is scalable. There have been actual direct bottomline impacts in terms of extra revenue created from the reporting solutions. They need to work on their license structure. They are not competitive against somebody like SAP BusinessObjects. We had a quote that was almost a third the price, coming from SAP BusinessObjects, and it's not a better platform. It's not cheaper. They do concurrent user licensing, while MicroStrategy does named user licensing, and that was literally the only difference. But it made a $500,000 difference. They've got to do something to make themselves more competitive. Maybe it's assessing your business users and what you really expect them to use, and maybe giving a reduced price on that. But they are already giving us a 60% discount and they were still a million or so above, over a three-year time period. That doesn't account for synergies as we get from on-site resources that are already available, but I thought that that was a big, big deficit for them. They gave us a good deal.We actually researched some of the other solutions. For options, price, and customer acceptance, this product has worked well for us.The price was good. We have had great support along the way. While initial cost of MicroStrategy is still on the higher side, the long-term benefits brings down overall cost of ownership significantly as compared to other tools like Tableau/Cognos.

Depending on your size, try to stick with SAP BusinessObjects BI Edge. Most people tend to overthink the licensing. Remember that one concurrent user means that one person can be performing a task at a given time. That does not mean that only one user can be on the system at a time, it means that only one person can be refreshing a report or designing a dashboard. There are tons of ways you can access your data or reports without consuming a license. I've seen cases where five concurrent licenses support thousands of users. There's no additional charge for a Development environment license, so build an additional development server. It is not an expensive platform. The licensing is for a package of users starting at 10 users. It has an option of a Cloud Platform (SAP Analytics Cloud) which has a lower price than the on-premise platform, and you can buy individual licences per user.Just work with SAP to make sure you have enough licenses but don't go overboard.
