Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"This solution has allowed us to become a top-class competitor among other consulting companies.""The most valuable feature is the ability to actually embed actions, comments, being able to leverage Transaction Services to embed the tool into a business process.""It keeps BI in the hands of everyone, rather than a developer or an analyst.""The most valuable feature is the ability to build reports, then customize for different groups instead of having to build multiple reports. Therefore, the ability to build customization in the reports for different groups.""It was easy to install and implement a report with it.""We pretty much use the knowledge base. We feel that Microstrategy's community is a good forum to use.""MicroStrategy has what they call the Semantic Graph — an enterprise-grade semantic graph — and I think the technology is fantastic.""It has had a direct impact on bottomline improvements."

"You can do quite a lot with it in terms of automated reports and dashboards.""We can set any property dynamically.""The feature that I like most is the drag and drop capability.""It's easy to use and maintain.""Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten...The deployment process of TIBCO Jaspersoft is easy.""The growth time is the most valuable feature of TIBCO Jaspersoft.""The end-user reporting is very handy and the standard reports that can be achieved by using Jaspersoft Studio are quite impressive.""We find the access restrictions on different user groups valuable."

Cons
"Scalability is something which will need to be improved when it goes to a bigger audience.""They need to supply the support system that's just not there right now. They don't have Enterprise Manager classes. You need in-depth classes to understand what those metrics are doing, to understand the table associations from one to the other. You can't just go and pick it up and understand that DT_DAY connects to all of these tables, without going into Architect, looking at the source tables. I, as a analyst, a slightly technical user, I don't have the expertise to do that. Business users definitely don't have the expertise to do that.""There are a lot of offerings, and we are not fully using everything to its advantage.""We've found the scalability to be very good. However, it depends on the environment. In general, it could be much better.""The online community page of the product is an area of concern where improvements are required.""With Cube partition (v10.1 and above) scalability has not been an issue, but the Cube publish time, and temporary space consumption while the Cube is being published, has almost doubled during implementation of Cube partition.""Preparation, data loading and data management application is challenging with MicroStrategy. It lacks cube-based analytics as it is outdated, meaning there is no memory or fast processing analytics or MMA deployment.""The UI seems klutzy with its manual entry."

More MicroStrategy Cons →

"Currently, JSON format is the main format we use, however, in TIBCO Jaspersoft, XML format is the default and JSON did not work because TIBCO did not fix it.""The upgrades are not easy.""There might be some compatibility issues with the dashboard if we're using the latest version and some clients are using the older version. Some features might not be supported.""I would like to see better support for big data.""Customization is an area with certain shortcomings in the solution that needs improvement.""We'd like to see the community version offer a little bit more support and better documentation and we'd like the enterprise edition to have better pricing.""The reporting templates have room for improvement.""The Ad Hoc Report Writer does not include as many features as Tableau and needs to be improved to meet expectations."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "They made a change in the licensing module some time ago and we can now use all the enterprise tools for free."
  • "The pricing for MicroStrategy is always on the higher side. They should seriously start thinking about their pricing and licensing strategy."
  • "While initial cost of MicroStrategy is still on the higher side, the long-term benefits brings down overall cost of ownership significantly as compared to other tools like Tableau/Cognos."
  • "The price was good. We have had great support along the way."
  • "We actually researched some of the other solutions. For options, price, and customer acceptance, this product has worked well for us."
  • "They gave us a good deal."
  • "There have been actual direct bottomline impacts in terms of extra revenue created from the reporting solutions."
  • "They need to work on their license structure. They are not competitive against somebody like SAP BusinessObjects. We had a quote that was almost a third the price, coming from SAP BusinessObjects, and it's not a better platform. It's not cheaper. They do concurrent user licensing, while MicroStrategy does named user licensing, and that was literally the only difference. But it made a $500,000 difference. They've got to do something to make themselves more competitive. Maybe it's assessing your business users and what you really expect them to use, and maybe giving a reduced price on that. But they are already giving us a 60% discount and they were still a million or so above, over a three-year time period. That doesn't account for synergies as we get from on-site resources that are already available, but I thought that that was a big, big deficit for them."
  • More MicroStrategy Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "The pricing is cost effective because it is based on servers rather than users."
  • "I would rate the pricing as four out of five because it's expensive."
  • "I find the price to be reliable and not overly costly."
  • "I give the cost of the solution a five out of ten."
  • "Since I checked last time, only one annual license costs about $25,000."
  • "The solution is a little bit expensive."

Any company (be it technology, manfucaturing, human resource, ecommerce, SME etc) always has the need for Business Intelligence to some or the other extent. If cost is one of the consideration factor, then the 2 BI tools which are at the forefront are Pentaho and Jaspersoft. But, often the same companies are caught up in an imbrogilo as to which tool to use, what are the technology/and end business user wise differences/ do i actually need to purchase commercial edition, is there any work around etc. Differences :- In the below mentioned points, I have tried to cover functionality wise the differences a. Reports :- Jaspersoft is known for its picture pixel perfect reporting. Jasper uses ireport for designing the reports. Hence, for having reports, Jaspersoft is the most ideal candidate. Pentaho uses Pentaho Report Designer. b. Dashboards :- Pentaho provides much more capabililties, interactivity in terms of dashboards. Dashboards designed in Pentaho are far more superior in functionality, aesthetically as compared to Jaspersoft. Pentaho CE uses CDE/CDF, Pentaho EE uses PDD . Dashboard functionality is present only in the Enterprise edition of Jaspersoft. c. Pentaho is having an intermediate layer known as Xactions & hence providing much more flexibility in terms of plugin designing, integration with applications, having out of box experience etc. Xactions supports scripting and scheduling of scripts execution. Jaspersoft dosent provide that much of flexibility in terms of… Read more →
