Quotes From Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
The features I've found the most useful are the plug-ins, the fact that you can connect almost everything to it. That's very useful. An excellent solution that is easy and intuitive to implement. The most valuable feature is its support for different types of devices, where it can use all of the equipment that you need. The most valuable feature is the dashboard, where I can have a single screen that provides a summary for hundreds of servers. This is a very good solution and it is simple to use, for any company. The most valuable feature is the monitoring of processes.

More Nagios XI Pros »

The most valuable feature is the extensibility, as there are really no limits as to what you can do with it.It is a user-friendly product that requires almost no maintenance. The most valuable feature is the monitoring of Windows and Linux servers. The advantages of SCOM are that it is definitely user friendly and a more appropriate solution for what we need.Availability monitoring is the feature I have found most valuable, as well as the capacity and ability to send notifications.SCOM has improved our organization by simplifying the monitoring process. The system tells you what the bi-weekly or monthly usage was and that enables us to report this information to the manager. It shows if there was a connectivity issue that needs to be fixed and it's easier to concentrate on what needs to get fixed. System errors, therefore, get fixed faster. The solution is scalable. If you want to monitor more you have to buy more licenses, but you can add on. We don't plan to increase usage. This is a product that does more generally than any of the competing solutions.

Cons
There's room for improvement in the visibility, and in the ability to extract information. Stuff like this should be more simple. They need more documentation for the plugins.I would like to see more customization in the network map because it is a bit tricky to use it.I would like a much easier GUI so that I can delete events and logs, which will free up a lot of space.I would like to see support for notification via SMS.The interface could be more user-friendly.

More Nagios XI Cons »

The interface is a little bit cumbersome and certain actions could be simplified. It would be a much better product if Microsoft provided management packs with the product. The dashboard features are not user-friendly for our management team, only for the technical department.I would like more customized reports. People should have some customization option on the dashboards for whenever they put multiple lists into it. Beyond customizing the content, there should be the ability to customize the colors so that they can engage some priority and mark challenges separately. In terms of features that could be improved, I would say the agent integration into the operating system. We are having difficulties integrating Linux into some of the networking devices. Then there is also an issue with capacity and limited space. That is something that needs to be improved.Of course, price is always an issue with Microsoft and could be improved. It lacks certain details that other products do better, like granular access and better application monitoring.

Pricing and Cost Advice
The pricing is high with separate licensing for the product and support. The licensing fees for this solution are approximately $3,000 USD per year. This solution is very expensive, at approximately $5,000 USD when I purchased it, which is why I haven't upgraded my version in several years. We are using the free version of this solution.

SCOM is part of the System Center suite and I am satisfied with the pricing. It is more expensive than the competition. If you have a Microsoft Enterprise Agreement, then this is part of the agreement. Our licensing fees are approximately $30 per user, per month.
