Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The ability to set up templates and groups of checks, as well as customize the checks themselves.""Nagios is stable and it's easy to use the monitoring software, which is why we chose this product.""The solution has a lot of plugins and scripts integrated with it.""The Script Module in Nagios is really easy to use and is really cost efficient.""The features I've found the most useful are the plug-ins, the fact that you can connect almost everything to it. That's very useful.""The installation is no problem. I've installed Nagios several times.""Nagios XI helped me to draw the network and check for system failures.""The most valuable feature is its support for different types of devices, where it can use all of the equipment that you need."

"Tanium has made the process of detecting threats more proactive with its detection. So, the process is easier and more efficient.""The interrogation piece was the most valuable feature because it was very detailed.""I'm not so familiar with the tool but I like the interaction of the console to the picture. Patching is the primary model I have been focusing on for the last couple of weeks. So I have created a proof of concept environment and have been checking the available features.""I would say Tanium is the best tool for vulnerability management.""I like the tool's incident response and security patching.""The product is granular and can build complex roles compared to other EDR vendors.""The most valuable features of this solution are the consolidation of all historical data on device endpoints, security drivers, firmware, and Software version gaps.""I like the fact that you can create patching campaigns depending on the area of your network that you want to address first. I like the ability it has to make several campaigns that work in parallel."

Cons
"The product's stability could be even better.""We often need to develop custom plugins to get Nagios to work the way we want it to work because the features we need are not always available in Nagios.""The way Nagios displays information isn't easy for a new user to understand. It's not intuitive enough. You need to read some tutorials or be trained to understand what it's displaying. Also, I think it needs more features to improve network visibility because there are some things you can't detect.""I would like to be able to extend it to all of our data centers, whether they are in the cloud or not. It would be helpful if I could connect everywhere.""The product could be optimized to improve the administrative user experience via the Nagios Core Configuration (NCC) GUI module.""The product does not have SAP monitoring.""Nagios XI can improve its GUI for users with a new look.""The PNP4Nagios plugin not working easily with XI is an issue for me, because some open source monitoring plugins do not work out of the box. But in the end, you learn to live with it."

More Nagios XI Cons →

"The most painful thing is the interface. It's a bit unclear sometimes.""The solution lacks mobility.""The solution can give a lot of false positives.""Most of the time, agent-relative issues have to be more equipped with self-healing features. At times, the agent is there, but for some reason, it doesn't report a status. It gives certain problems that are obviously agent-based.""It is not really additional functions, or the features that are needed, rather the complexity would be reduced based on the number of modules required to put together a comprehensive operational security and risk compliance model.""The performance could improve in future releases. We have had performance issues in specialized web environments, but overall I think the problems are less than 2% of the computer systems being used.""I would like to have more integrations and custom plugins to input. Integration is always a big deal in a lot of different environments.""The solution needs to improve the reporting and tracking capabilities."

I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →
