Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Its initial setup is easy.""It's pretty simple. Once you set it, it goes; and then the idea of being able to get it to the cloud very quickly. It's kind of a set-it-forget-it.""The solution can be used for all Office 365 applications.""It's so easy to work with.""Most importantly is having that island into that datacenter, and being able to address things in the same console. Thus, it is irrelevant where it's stored.""Being able to move data seamlessly from one-premise to the cloud (Azure). It works great. The backup solution is perfect for us.""The most valuable features of the solution stem from the fact that it is easy to use and integrate with whichever operating systems you use, providing you with a complete view, especially when you plan to migrate to some other operating system.""The most valuable feature is the portability of large archived data. You're able to put things on large on-prem, low-cost storage and then augment that with even lower cost storage in the cloud."

"We get a lot of features with Veeam and we are happy to use this solution. After shutdown, the servers here automatically turn off and Veeam is keeping up all this. It's tension free work.""One of the most valuable features is the integration. Another good feature is the instant recovery.""I like all the backup features in Veeam.""Strong performance with a high level of compatibility.""The most valuable feature is the instant recovery.""It's streamlined the backup and recovery for my customers in the sense that it has an easy management console that's easy to set up any type of instant recovery.""I like Veeam a lot because it solves problems, is stable, and runs very well.""It is a good solution for backups and reporting."

Cons
"More than a 500 volume limit. At the moment, it only supports up to 500 volumes for SnapMirror and that's a problem. We've got 750, so a larger limit for volume replicas for SnapMirror.""The solution needs faster indexing.""More capacity with the basic model of the AltaVault would probably help out.""It would be nice if the solution was more complete. Many customers are looking for a single solution or silo that they can manage everything from. It would be nice, instead of having different products, if everything a client needed was in one solution.""I really want to partner it with the SnapCenter. We haven't implemented that yet. We're upgrading all of our stuff to the ONTAP 9, which you had to have.""NetApp's own competing products complicate things.""I would like to see more web support.""What could be helpful is different user base authentication so then maybe we could allow different customers to point to a single appliance and they only see the backups and things that they have."

More NetApp AltaVault Cons →

"I only ever found one error. It was when we were doing a file copy job. After using it for ten minutes, it would slow down and cause a bottleneck error.""The web interface could be more visual.""We would like to have the ability to perform more things on the web interface. The heavy client is still needed to perform advanced tasks.""Pricing can be improved.""Its licensing needs to be improved. Its licensing has become complex since last December. They have changed the way the product is licensed, and there is a lot of confusion. Sometimes, when a new version comes, it seems that it has not been tested enough because I usually find some bugs in it. It could also have more integration with other virtualization products, such as desktop virtualization products and open-source virtualization products.""When you have some small issues, you should be able to go through it by yourself and solve the issue instead of opening the ticket and waiting for the engineers to troubleshoot.""I would like to see more broad support for other applications such as databases, or other operating systems.""There is a lot of room for improvement, but the primary issue we have is that it's not built for the cloud."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It's quite cost-effective."
  • "The pricing is not too bad, but could be a little better."
  • "It is a rather expensive program."
  • "You could compare it to a Dell EMC or ECS, and I think it's probably a little less costly than that. Within the marketplace, it's a medium cost."
  • "In one use case, and we have several, to run for a particular customer, the price is about $375,000 a year."
  • "There is a need to make yearly payments towards the licensing costs attached to the solution, which comes to around 3,000 USD."
  • More NetApp AltaVault Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "If you have Exchange, Oracle, SQL, or a supported SAN, then I suggest getting at least an Enterprise edition. It’ll pay for itself in no time."
  • "The pricing and licensing is better than the competitors, but it could be better."
  • "Room for improvement is actually more in the way of licensing. The really good and useful features are in the Enterprise plus edition, and that one is really expensive."
  • "Since pricing is per socket, it is not expensive to add capacity as you go along."
  • "The licensing is based on the number of cores you have in your ESX or Hyper-V environment."
  • "The price is a bit high. Licensing type is VMware friendly, so it is easy."
  • "I think the price is good when you choose the Essentials Suite, but when you buy a full featured version (for instance the Enterprise Plus) the price is a little bit expensive."
  • "Setup cost and licensing of Veeam are nothing to complain about when compared to similar products for enterprise backup recovery solutions."

    Overview

NetApp AltaVault is a cloud-integrated storage solution created to increase recovery capabilities and lower cost and risks. It is better than traditional backup and recovery solutions because they are considerably slower, more expensive, risky, and can be too complex for the comprehension of many users. NetApp AltaVault solves issues related to backup, archival, and restoration. Compared to on-premises solutions, this software claims to be up to 90% less expensive while solving multiple issues related to data storage in the cloud. AltaVault presents three solutions to its customers: backup and recovery, cold storage and archives, and disaster recovery.

    1. NetApp’s backup and recovery solution works with Kerne-Based Virtual Machine, Microsoft Hyper-V, and VMware vSphere, creating a solution for mid-sized businesses as well as for bigger companies that want to protect their offices in different locations. The usable local cache capacities of this solution range from 32TB to 383TB, providing clients with enough storage for their important data while giving them the option to retrieve it if something goes amiss.

      2. NetApp AltaVault can be configured in cold storage mode and used for data that is not often used. The solution is scalable, thus allowing minimal costs for operating with cold data and allowing fast access to it at the same time.

        3. AltaVault offers disaster recovery for Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure. Your data will be secured on the cloud, providing you with a secure backup if the need for disaster recovery arises.

          NetApp AltaVault Features

NetApp AltaVault’s many valued features include:

          • Data reduction: NetApp AltaVault applies deduplication and compression, reducing data up to a 30:1 ratio.

          • Network and cloud optimization: AltaVault can increase data transfer speed by up to 4 times due to its built-in WAN optimization.

          • Data restoration: Because data is restored from the local cache, recoverability is up to 32 times faster than other methods.

          • Deployment and scale: Users can choose their preferred method - virtual, physical, or cloud-based in Azure or AWS. Since NetApp AltaVault starts at 2TB and can scale up to 57PB, it is one of the most scalable products in its category.

          • Compatible with existing backup software: NetApp AltaVault is compatible with NetApp SnapMirror, EMC, IBM, Commvault, Veritas, and Veeam, meaning it offers a vast array of options for its users when it comes to backup software.

          • Cloud choice and agility: AltaVault supports NetApp StorageGRID, Azure, Google, IBM, and AWS. This provides users with the assurance that their data is safely stored, even if their cloud provider experiences technical issues.

          Reviews from Real Users

Veeam Backup & Replication is a solution that stands out when compared to many of its competitors. Some of its major advantages are its ease of set up, the fact that it is agentless, and that it has an intuitive dashboard.

A Network Operations Manager at an educational organization says, "Integration with VMware is excellent with very granular recovery."

An Inside Solutions Architect at a tech services company mentions, “I like that it's agent-less, easy to set up, and hardware-agnostic.”
